Hi community, I am writing a master thesis on "mobile gaming experience". Therefore I run some tests with iphone/ipod games. Right now I need to choose which games to test. I am looking for an aggregation of: - most sold games - best rated games - etc. All I can find so far is Apple's 2008 press release and a dozen blogs with subjective top-10 ratings. Any idea where else to look?
Apple recently redesigned iTunes, including the App Store. There is now a chart for the highest grossing apps. Unfortunately it doesn't list highest grossing of all time, so you'll have to make due with correlating press releases on number of units of an app sold with the price of said app (or prices over time). It's not easy to get this info at all. Most of the sources available on the 'net do exactly what I alluded to above: analyze units sold with the prices, but even that is troublesome as indications of how many units were sold at the higher price, how many after a price drop, etc. are hard to come by and most publishers don't give that sort of info out.
Also, for "top" rated (as in critically acclaimed) iPhone/touch games, I'd go with "professional" review sites. IGN, pocketgameruk, etc.
That's what I am doing right now. But the dataset is very heterogenous. Maybe I will just stick with popular and succesfull games from 2008, where I have more sources avaliable. Then again, I would have to recruit my subjects with a screener who ensures, that they don't know the games yet. Ah, game research can be a real pain in the ***
that's a nice tool. I would need something like that with all Apps (as I cannot add them all by hand).
