Sensible Soccer is a game from the mid-90s that was available for Amiga and PC. Many people (including myself) still regard it (and the sequel Sensible World of Soccer) as the best football game ever made; it's simply not been surpassed in terms of control and depth. Do yourself a favour; if you have a PC, download an Amiga emulator and grab the disk images - there's folk out there still updating the player & team database to the current day, which hopefully demonstrates just how much effort people think the game is worth. Between AS2 and SSC14, you're really spoilt for choice to be honest. Both are fantastic games. I've found SSC14 to be slightly more responsive when playing, and it's probably the easier game to control; just something about the virtual controls in AS2 aren't quite right for me - the player switching is a little frustrating. That said, I'm commenting mostly on the Android (Samsung S5 phone) version. I had a go on my iPad Air yesterday and it felt a lot smoother and more reactive. I think AS2 has more character and is far more similar to Sensible World of Soccer in terms of depth within the career mode, the multitude of tournament options and the personality of the players. I think any issues with AS2's virtual controls are being addressed, so I'm looking forward to the next update to see how it works out. TL;DR - buy both and get Sensible Soccer on your PC too!
I grew up with Kick off and sensible soccer on Amiga, the two best football games ever, during that time there were two other cool games, Italia 90 (because we could control the goalkeeper which was amazing) and Manchester United Europe (even tho I don't like them the game was cool) both on Amiga. SSC14 is a great game too, I really like it, but I think AS2 is better and closer to a seni in terms of sensation and gameplay, the only thing I dislike is the shooting, it's not good enough to my point of view, when I play with Chelsea and see Eden Hazard missing the goal right in front of the goal and see the ball going out for a throw, there's a problem, I don't ask for auto aiming, I don't ask for a 100% acurency, I only ask for better control and 360° angle shooting
If the ball goes out for a throw then it's not related to player's skill. Maybe you did not keep pressed the direction in the exact time of pressing button or you tried to turn the player 90 degree and you pushed the button too early (maybe you gave not the player the time to completely turn and adjusting his accuracy)
I of course meant "it's simply NOT been surpassed" in my earlier post! Have altered that now! ha! Yeah, I used to play a lot of Man Utd: The Double on the Amiga too - that was fantastic, and it was one of the very few footie games that let you and your mates have career modes running side by side - of course it meant that you could cheat and sign Liverpool players for Plymouth! ! It was isometric rather than top-down, but had a team editor as well, and I spent almost as much time in that as I did playing the damned thing! I gave AS2 another go earlier, and the more I play it, the more I like it. I've never been a fan of virtual buttons though, I really miss the feedback of a proper control pad. On the Android version I can use my PS3 pad but the mappings are all wrong (R1 to shoot, and triangle to pass feels awful). I've got the game for the iPad Air too - does anyone know a good controller that works well with AS2 for iOS please?
If Eden Hazard kicks it out for a throw, you were not only not aiming accurately at the goal but really weren't aiming at the goal at all. A shot goes in the direction you press (give or take a few degrees for players with low attributes), not in any way automatically towards goal - because of this you can use it for fantastic crosses, long passes and through balls just like in Sensi So yes, if you're running across goal and hit shoot without changing direction, you have just told the game to kick it out for a throw. Another thing that could be going wrong is hitting shoot when your player isn't near the ball. In this case the shot is delayed and the action remembered for when your player can actually kick it. But I actually preferred the AS1 way of dealing with that - if you weren't close enough to the ball to shoot, you got a slide instead (actually more useful than the delay if used deliberately)
Manchester United Europe and Man Utd: The Double are NOT the same game. Man U Europe was a side view soccer game, direct sequel of Man Utd FC game. Man Utd: The Double is a later game, with both top-down and isometric view (you can choose as in AS2!). Man Utd: The Double was a game in the same mood of Sensi and Goal: fast, arcade, funny. In a certain way is the old uncle of AS2.
If you look at my video, the shots are curled in very deliberately and completely manually, often from absurd angles with low players. The game gives you this control but that in turn means it can't give you outside help. If the game tried to help, it could ruin your deliberate plan. It's also what makes the game much more satisfying than any game with auto shot aiming - you didn't score because you were helped, you scored because you nailed it.
Yeah 3rd option! There's s small delay after pressing shot button and the action itself, so the tiniest change of direction means a miss, which can be frustrating.
There's no delay at all if your player is already close enough to strike the ball, only a delay if you have mistimed it and you have to wait for him to get there.
Um. I didn't say they were the same game!? I was just reliving my favourite Amiga footie games! Mr Aggressive!
I think both thericochet and djstout may have a point here. Active Soccer 1 got a lot of 1 star reviews because people slided continuously thinking the game had a flow, they didn't understand that you cannot reserve the shot in AS1 and if you were far from the ball a slide occurred. So in AS2 i partially removed the possibility to slide (and anticipate the defender) because it could be difficult to people to understand the right timing. Now in AS2 if you push the button the game reserves the shooting command and the player will shoot as soon as he controls the ball. What I think happens to djstout is that in the meantime he changes the stick direction and the shoot takes into consideration the current stick position when in ball possession. So I think there could be a quick fix here: if the game stores the direction when the button is pressed (and shoot reserved) the djstout problem could disappear. As soon as the player has ball control the shoot could have the direction stored when button was pressed. I will do some tests and if it works I will include already in the next update. PS: This is a nice demonstration that reporting potential issues is really good, there is always space for a fix!
Sliding is actually one of the things that I still have a bit of an issue with in AS2. The number of off-the-ball incidents that occurs is extremely high, because the screen's moved on, but the player-switching hasn't. I'm not sure what the solution is there, though, because I've also had player-switching to-and-fro elsewhere, where the opposition has just rocketed through my back four, due to the game switching between two players several times per second.
Haven't had a single off the ball foul. Except for some choice nfl-style blocking by the cpu... We should have an online game or three Craig!
Different people different issues ^^ I guess you're a better striker and I am a better defender, I have no issues while defending
Add me to the online game too, I'd love to play against both of you guys and Gianluca too, would it be possible to organise a small tournament Gianluca? Let say 6 or more players from this forum willing to play an online tournament (we play each other once) in a league, would be so awsome!
