I'd love to hear some impressions on this. No IAP and MFi controller support has me really interested. I'd usually buy it, classes is starting next week tho, won't have time for gaming other than the good ones to get.
Now, don't get me wrong, they're two very different games, but, this is easily the best space combat game I've played on iOS since GoF2. Everything about it oozes charm, from the cell-shaded-y visuals, to the cartoony cut scene art, to the witty dialouge, to the fluid space combat. The game is set up in missions, and each mission is preceded by an optional story cut scene you can view (seems smartly designed for people who don't care about the story/second playthroughs) that, as can be expected, advances the story. I'm only 2 missions in and already I'm loving it, the dialouge has genuinely made me chuckle well over 10 times already. You'd be crazy not to read the cut scenes, as they're what really makes the game stick out. Honestly, read every piece of text in this game, you'll be glad you did. I'm also finding the actually gameplay very enjoyable. It's streamlined, but this makes it feel more natural, and I'm not missing that extra plane of movement at all. So far, the ship I've used has a turbo booster and a blaster. You tap a button to boost, and another button to switch the blaster auto fire on and off. When an enemy is in your reticle, you can tap an information box that displays the unit to "lock on," which essentially makes it so there's an arrow pointing when the unit goes off screen, and highlights the unit in a triangle. Auto-aim isn't really needed. Plus, you can do an infinite barrel roll. How can you say no to that?! I'm looking forward to the later missions which will undoubtedly spice up combat with different ships and enemies. So, I highly recommend you pick this one up. The simpler combat may turn some of you off, but honestly, it's a blast if you enjoy it for what it is. This is the most enjoyable experience I've had on iOS for months.
It's hard to imagine I'd have more fun with this than I did with Traps N Gemstones or Super Crossfighter. There have been some pretty excellent releases lately. But hey if you think this is the most enjoyable game you've played in months on iOS, then that's cool too. Anyone else play this and have any feedback? I'm still leaning towards a firm no because it seems a bit too basic for me, but I love space shooters so I could change my mind. How big are the areas you play in? Do you hit invisible walls if you stray too far from the current mission?
I've kinda been losing touch with iOS a little bit lately, but yeah, you make some good points. I've only spent a criminal 20 minutes in Traps (I'll get to it, eventually. I've been busy), and wouldn't really count Crossfighter as it's a re-release. I'd also like to point out I'm referring to the experience as a whole, not just the gameplay. The game is funny, interesting, and great to look at. The gameplay itself is a streamlined space adventure, it's not revolutionary, but good fun, and well worth the $2. Combined with the other half of the game, it's well worth $4. So at the launch price of $2 is a steal. Also, I'd like to point out the term "enjoyable." It's not necessarily the "best" game I've played on iOS in months, but it is the one I have enjoyed most, as the game oozes character and is easy to enjoy. It's a feel good game. Plus, I love dinosaurs. And nightc, if you like Traps, I recommend the Cartoon Network power puff girls game, it's a sweet metroidvania by Radiangames (who made super crossfighter)
I haven't tested it, but they seem pretty big. I haven't hit a wall while just flying and doing a mission. The way it works is you start the next mission, then you're popped out next the the big space cruiser, and you're given objective markers, which you then fly to. Also, you don't "pick" your mission like in GoF. It's a linear story with pre-determined missions that you follow.
Thanks for the impressions JCho133. I'll pick it up tonight after I finish Oceanhorn: DOTY Edition. Finally ready to set sail to the final showdown yay
Yeah I grabbed PPG during the sale. Radiangames has quickly become one of my favorite devs. I'm looking forward to Inferno 2. I appreciate the feedback on this game. I love 3D shooters (rails, free roam, invisible wall arena, turn based) and 80's references and stuff so this seemed like a good fit. For the moment though I'm going to scratch the itch by going back to Air Mail. It's not space but I like the feeling of flight and exploration.
Understandable I heard Air Mail is a good one, I'm yet to try it myself. Also, I'm pretty sure that the guys who made Air Mail are making a 3D space shooter of their own, Space Noir
Played for a bit. On mission 9. I'm not really enjoying it as much. The music is annoying, sound effects could be better. Game seems a bit on the too easy side, but maybe it will get harder...hopefully. Battles seem over too quickly. I do like the controls for the MFi gamepad...I like the 80s stuff...there's some humor, but I'm not really finding it all that funny. Idk, I'll go back to it later, maybe it'll get better farther in, for now I think I'll finish oceanhorn. Others seems to like it, but so far I'd give it a 6/10
I'm enjoying it quite a bit. But here are some areas you could fix Phil. A) More enemies. Missions feel a wee bit too short. B) Lower the music. C) More power to the sound effects. Like the boost sounding powerful like a "FWOOSH" and the ray guns going "TWHOOM TWHOOM" instead of "pew pew" D) Putting the speed slider locked next to the boost button, and the rayguns button next to that with the missile button above it.
