Today I decided that I'd start playing The Elder Scrolls Arena. It's not really nostalgia, since I haven't really played the game before (not for longer than a couple of hours), but I keep getting drawn to that game for some reason.

I spent half of the day tweaking the dosbox configurations and mapping the controls and the other half I spent dying in the first dungeon. Anyway, this is the first character I interacted with once I finally came out of the dungeon:

    Haha...

Some other old-ish games I'm planning on playing:
    - TES Dagerfall
    - TES Morrowind
    - Ultima Underworld
    - Elite
    - Blood
    - Empire Earth
    - Grim Fandango

    Any recommendations?

If you don't mind point and click then maybe have a look at

    Beneath a Steel Sky
    Lure of the Temptress
    Simon the Sorcerer

May do some other genres later.

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream

Really, just look around GOG.COM for stuff that runs under DOS. ;)

Maybe some love for Monkey Island 1 or 2 by Lucas Games. Great music, campy jokes, frustrating, but generally fun puzzles. I wish Loom was available for ios.

Sadly Monkey Island 1 & 2 weren't ported that well to iOS, but you could play Loom on PowerDOS. ;)

Can't go wrong with most of the old LucasFilm/LucasArts Games - better add Sam N Max and Day of the Tentacle (Maniac Mansion) to the list. Indy Jones and the Last Cruisade was fun, but Fate of Atlantis was much better.

All the SSI Goldbox D&D games.
Planescape:Torment (best game ever for me, and by a wide margin).
Might & Magic: World of Xeen, and later ones. Wizardry, after IV.
    Stonekeep.
If you are masochistic enough, Bard's Tale I-III.

I remember Loom, that was a nice one back then.

Go have a look at the crpgaddict.blogspot.com . He plays through all computer RPGs, starting in the stoneage of the 70s. And a great writer to boot ;)
Should give you enough inspiration for the rest of the year at least.

Damn, what an awesome game Arena is. I mean, I knew it was something, but it exceeded my expectations. And some people say this game didn't age well... Huh? You can be a sorcerer who doesn't just incinerate his foes, but tears down whole dungeons. No seriously, you can craft your own spells with which you can create or destroy walls and floors (minecraft must have ripped that off haha). How badass is that? The dragonborn better go hide in a corner of the wall, while there still is one.

The game has many details as well. For example, you will drown if you get paralyzed while swimming. The NPCs will act differently based on your race/personality/reputation. The haggling system is very good as well. Townes feel alive. There are hardcore dungeons that can take you a day to clear it. And the world is just massive. Gold actually feels like it has some value. Spells are awesome and the fact that you can create your own spells, just adds extra to the awesome.

What I love the most is the waypoint system; or more precisely, the lack thereof. You actually have to ask for directions in this game. You are given a map (an empty map in case of dungeons) and you have to ask NPCs for directions. The closer to the place you are asking about you are, the more precise their description of the location will be. You are also given the option to write notes or mark places on the map by yourself as well. Which is very different from just following a magic glowing arrow that apparently has a higher IQ than you do.

My only complaint would be the generic plot, the small variety of sprites and the enemy AI. Enemies often run into corners of the walls and can't jump over pits, so they make easy targets for ranged attacks. But then again I am not forced to misuse that. But other than that, this is THE game.

Either way, I can see myself playing this game for months, but I will try to wrap it up, because I am now really looking forward to playing Daggerfall.

I remember Daggerfall, played it way back when ;)

Oddly enough, I just looked at some screenshots, and the graphics look much better than I remember them.
Much more colorful and less bland than the brownish/earthen-colors style in my memory.

Other than that I mainly recall incredible frustration with glaring bugs, which made me abandon it pretty early.

What bugs? Hope it's nothing gamebreaking...
All I read about Daggerfall is that the world is frustratingly huge.

...and done. The Staff of Chaos has been assembled. Jagar Tharn has been defeated, Uriel Septim IV returned to our dimension and I was named the Eternal Champion. No idea what happened to Ria Silmane and no idea what my true identity was though, ugh.

Played this for about 40 hours. I also recorded the whole thing for some reason and now have 90 Gb of high quality footage. I might do something with that in the future.

    On to Daggerfall then.

TES Arena taught me to read the manual of the game first before delving into the game itself. And so I've been going trough the Daggerfall manual for about an hour now and it seems like a very, very complex game with tons of features and an unlimited amount of ways to experience the game. Don't get me wrong though, that's not a bad thing, but I must admit that I'm kind of scared to go into this game as it seems that it will take a vast amount of time to get trough the game thoroughly.

Any of you played Daggerfall before? What did you think of it? What was your play-style?
