It's kinda impossible but I really wish there would be a 3G version of the touch like Apple did with the iPad. But I wonder if that'll cannibalize the iPhone sales.

  2. Probably. Each device has its own sacred cows Apple won't cross over to encourage people to buy each one. The Touch has more maximum storage. The iPhone has ... well, a phone. The iPad has the big screen and enhanced functionality of iOS 4. Occasionally, Steve will sacrifice one of the lesser cows when he runs out of tentpole items for a new refresh, such as the camera(s) on the upcoming 4th gen Touch in September, formerly the exclusive domain of the iPhone.

The interesting thing about the Touch getting the camera is that it means that it will have to get a new major tentpole next year, because once the Touch gets the camera, and given that a storage boost has to be one of the major upgrades on the next iPhone, the only thing missing on the Touch is the phone, which will give iPhone users no reason buy a touch as Apple would like. Perhaps they're banking on flash memory being cheap enough next year to bump the Touch to 128MB.

iv been playing with the astronomy apps as of late.. and i feel cheated as the phones get to point to the sky and it orients the stars for them..

if the ipod got a compass i could do the same. so yeah compass would be cool.
but i think you are right if the touch gets a camera next year he will have to do something to make people want to upgrade. i have zero plans of upgrading next year.. im sure ill be happy with whatever i get this year and probably will upgrade in 2 years.. and give away this year model to a friend or a family member. i sure like the smile i got once i told the person im giving mine too.. :)

Everytime I see this, I have to disagree completely. An MP3 player and a phone are two totally different markets, despite feature overlaps. There are people who simply don't want a new phone or who are perfectly content with what they have. In fact, I'd say that's a much larger number than you would suspect (just look at the poll in Gen Discussion about what iDevice people use-- a large chunk of them are iPod Touches). Switching contracts or buying into a new one is much more complicated and costly than simply having a one-shot MP3 player with some extra features. The two will have overlaps, but they will always have separate markets.

Isn't that basically what Mindfield is saying though? There are separate markets, so Apple doesn't want to blur the line between the iPod and iPhone too much in order for them to remain distinct in their own markets.

To a significant degree, yes, and that's the way it's supposed to be -- and I'm not saying that any sort of majority do buy both, only that Apple tries to cater to those who do. At one time I did have both an iPod Touch and an iPhone, because at the time the iPhone was only available in 16 gigs max, while the Touch was 32, and I wanted that extra space. Ultimately the iPhone got the space bump it needed and I no longer needed the Touch, so I sold it. So I'm one of those in that overlap space in Apple's Venn diagram of crossover customers, and that's why they do it.

EDIT: Basically what Midian said. :)

My point was that they are separate markets, and so even if the line is blurred, there will always be people who only stick to one side or another.

I guess it depends how far they blur it. If the iPod Touch suddenly started supporting SMS messages over all the popular carriers I'd just go with that since it's practially all I do with my phone anyway.

I was going to buy an iPhone 4,but I can't pay that insane bill every month. That's why I'm buying the next iPod. I wish they had a pay-as-you-go iPhone. :p

You can already email mobile numbers and have text conversations that way. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/email-to-sms/

Gmail doesn't allow it anymore, but most other emails do. Yahoo even offers it right in your inbox.

Yep, definitely going to upgrade to the new iPod Touch. My dated 3G is just not good enough for my demanding gaming needs.

I hope the update the design as well, I love the iPhone 4 design.

  15. I doubt the Touch will get the iPhone's styling. That's one of the things that keeps the iPhone distinct.

Why? The current touch's look like the old iPhone. Only difference was the thickness, and the camera. Let's all hope that the touch will have that sexy, new design.:D

well i sync my ipod first time this week to do my back up etc before i figure out if im gonna restore the os or not.. seems iso4.2 is out now.. i originally wanted to keep 4.0 ( my logic is something went south and its the root of of all my apps crashing not the apps not being compatible like i originally thought ) and jail break for first time.. but im wondering if the iso4.2 dose not fix some bugs besides the pdf exploit used to jailbreak.. i guess if iv not jailbreak my ipod yet i wont be missing anything and just wait for the next jailbreak to come out.

This kind of came just in time as my 32g 2nd Gen iPod touch just took bricked sh!t on me. What I am looking forward to most of all about the 4th Gen iPod touch, is how it will look. I am hoping it will look just like the iPhone 4, as the iPhone 4 is bout the sexiest device I have ever laid eyes upon.

Just thought I would update this thread and say that the Apple Event will be held on the 1st of September, no doubt releasing the new iPod Touch.

Really? I agree with 270Kp in that Apple would follow the new iPhone design just thinner (or maybe some subtle design changes like the silver back on the current design).

I believe (hope) that there will be a big design change as it would be such a disappointment for people waiting for the device.

I really hope it has the design of the iPhone 4 as well. It's sad to say but it's almost a deal breaker if it isn't because I want it so bad... but since I have no iPod anyways, I will be getting the 4th Gen Touch pretty much no matter what lol.
