I'm getting this on Friday once my exams are all finished, but I was wondering, is this game permadeath? I can't imagine it is, but just checking.
If you die you'll start back at the last spawn point so you can carry on. I'm loving this, playing it a lot, about level 30 at the moment. Taking my time with it as i dont want to complete it soon ! Just really enjoying it. Found a hidden room in one city, the clue to the hidden room was how shall i say, very similar to the way it works in Ultima which i really liked. One of the best games i've played this year, for me its the best Ultima homage. Funny when the official Ultima game came out the other month
Thanks, really looking forward to playing this. I don't want the game to be too easy, and my usual class for this kind of game is the archer. I've read that he's the hardest character, but I want to make sure that he isn't frustratingly hard.
The mage is way overpowered- at level 6 it can do the damage of a level 40 warrior. If you want the game to last and be fun, I would recommend either the warrior or archer. If you are looking for a challenge, either of those two classes have their 'challenges'. Warrior- have to get close to enemies, sometimes hard to hit enemies, some enemies are ranged and will try to obliterate you. Ranger- fairly weak, have to use a hit and run tactic if you want to efficiently deal damage while staying alive It really depends on the type of person you are. But once I finish as the mage I would happily replay the game again as a different class.
The games obviously made quite an impact on many of us. Please please take a few minutes of your time and rate the game on itunes. The more comments/reviews/ratings it gets its good for all of us (Sequel at some point ?! Or added levels etc). I've just left a review, still so impressed with this game. Its like its 1990 all over again and i'm watching my mate on his Amiga playing Ultima IV hours on end !
Warrior is easy as pie. Nothing ever does significant damage to me and I kill everything rapidly. The only trouble I have is magic users that freeze me and stay at range, but they still don't have a chance to kill me, it just takes me a little longer to kill them. If you look earlier in the thread, everyone was saying archer was OP. So unfortunately I don't think real challenge can be found in this game currently. The exploration, discovery, and pushing the story forward is fun, but it's really a walk in the park.
Alright, thanks. The open world aspect is what truly interested me about this game. I guess I'll play as the archer when I get the game.
Best bow in the game? I got it as a drop, not sure if the drop was random or scripted. And speaking of bows, I went into a dungeon packing 1200 arrows... I still ran out and eventually kept moving forward with my trusty dagger in hope of finding an intrepid merchant. Alas, the placement of merchants in harsher locales is lacking and I was forced to die and then trek back to the closest supply of arrows, wherein I bought 10000 arrows. If I still run out of arrows I'm going to be very displeased
Duivs, I'm glad you figured out what you had missed. I did so much exploring and sidequests that by time I got to the part where you were stuck it progressed through on the first conversation. ........... I went ahead and voted this GOTW. Progress wise, Spoiler I got the key hand on the first try (no need to talk to him more than once), ventured into the skeleton infested place to the west of that spot, cleaned it out fully and explored the path after that... got in the castle, cleared nearly everything to the main boss. I'm glad this game isn't a rogue because I've died so many times I know I'd never finish it if there was permadeath. After grinding forever trying to finish the castle, I started to run low on supplies so I ventured back to the first town, sold everything not of use, and bought 100 extra potent red teas, 100 meat, and still have more money than I can possibly use. I like the amount of loot possible. Instead of progressing on, I've opted to explore more. I found a small town filled with goblins... explored and completed a castle infested with them... and then ventured to the town north west of the first town. I put so many hours into this game now, it's pretty crazy. This is the kind of stuff I just love in gaming. Still there's so much of the map I haven't seen, so I'm pretty psyched at how much content is left to enjoy. Current stats for my Knight: Level 53 Points distributed: 175-Str; 15-Dex; 100-Con; 5-Int; 20-Wis Skills: 79-Swords; 14-Mauls; 48-Spears (everything else 0) With current equipment: 87-Attack; 714-Defense
Is the Mage overpowered? Let me put it this way ..... Tired of one-shotting the bad guys with your insanely overpowered Fireball, no problem, lay down a field of fire spells, lure them in, and ding, you gained another level. Too easy, then just cast a couple elementals that don't just follow you around and protect you, they seek and destroy, and seem to be able to detect and path-find around walls. And if you have the mana, go ahead, cast as many as you like and watch the exp roll in. Oh, did you get hit by that 1k hp dragon fireball, no problem, youve got an awesome heal spell that covers that hit and more. To bad these nasty mobs (don't know which), keep poisoning you, no worries Mage, your cleansing spell will take care of that too. Oh look, the superduperuber boss, he won't fall as easy as his silly minions did, oh wait, is he dead already? Seriously, the only thing holding the Mage back is the lack of primary hotkeys for his insane arsenal, but who's complaining? As much as I admire the game, there are absolutely play balance issues.
I'm really struggling with finding my way around and out of dungeons. I'm thinking some kind of automap with a color dot where the entrance is (like Sword of Fargoal) and maybe some way to make notes on maps, similar to Cavern or Ultima Underworld. I keep forgetting where stuff is.
Yes, no problem for me on mini. There is a nice degree of customization, fixed vs. floating, large vs small, and you can set the location for fixed sticks.
Is there a death penalty? I was in a dungeon and collected some nice archer gear, was killed and I spawned at home with the new gear... So.. No penalty for dying apart from having to walk back?
I recall the developer indicated that players lose only experience on death. I requested they add a permadeath mode, but a better option would be to allow users to determine/toggle various death penalties if possible.
Haha this is my biggest issue. I'm now middling at both daggers & arrows because I couldn't be bothered to go back to Agaria when there were several cities in the area I hadn't yet visited. 'Oh, they'll have arrows'. Poor town, poor town, ghost town. Nope!
