The one point definitely worth mentioning is that tapping on tiles rotates them - I don’t think this is explained in the tutorial and it led to an immensely frustrating / impossible first run or four. (Why do I only get corners facing one way???) Echoseven Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Jul 19, 2011 6,091 270 83 The red Skittle #9 Echoseven, Nov 3, 2022 Isle of Arrows is beautiful in many ways, but it’s strength is also it’s biggest downfall. The game plays out a lot like a board game. In typical tower defense fashion, you’re tasked with defending an isle against waves of invaders following a known path. Between waves you can place tiles that add towers, extend the path, let you earn more gold, or add land that you can then build on. The tiles you get are randomly selected and this… this is what gives the game its fun roguelike twist, but can also ruin a run. Going wave after wave without seeing extra towers is a very real risk that puts you behind the power creep. However, good strategy can go a long way to mitigate that. Every turn you get good, which can be used to skip a tile or four, in the hopes of finding something that helps. Planning ahead is also absolutely crucial, even if you have to adjust your plans later. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable game that is very pretty, tons of fun, and quick to pick up and understand. It is explained in the tutorial though. ROGER-NL, slewis7, Anotherkellydown and 1 other person like this. I really like how the instructions are handled. Ideally, all games should do this. Have a somewhat guided interactive tutorial AND some sort of written instructions to cover this same material. I find more often than not, after going through a tutorial and then playing the game on my own, there will be a few basic mechanics that eluded me. If the game includes something like this game's "How to Play" it is then really easy to quickly flip through the instructions to see that ONE bit I needed re-explained as opposed to sitting through the whole tutorial yet again for this one mechanic. slewis7 likes this. Ghostdog1 Well-Known Member Jan 30, 2015 319 124 43 #11 Ghostdog1, Nov 3, 2022 This could have been the casual TD game. But devs destroyed it in my opinion with depending too much on RNG for placing towers and correct pathing. Instead of tactic or strategy it‘s pure luck what card you will get next. Sometimes you just wait for 7 or 8 rounds to get one Attack Tower. I also don't like the fact that by the time you'll hit round 30 you'll be trying to take care of 3 different paths. So you have to split your already extremely limited RNG resources even more, rather than just trying to focus down the one main path you've been building for 20 rounds. It would have been so much better just to implement a splitting path in later rounds. I truly love TD games, but this one is too punishing. And it makes no sense. The art style and sound in this game is so relaxing and easygoing. So why does it need to be so frustrating? Echoseven Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Jul 19, 2011 6,091 270 83 The red Skittle #12 Echoseven, Nov 3, 2022 To be honest I don’t find it that difficult until the final two waves. One thing that goes a LONG way towards mitigating difficulty is collecting a buttload of gold. One small thing that’s glossed over in the tutorial is that you get more gold for every 10 gold you hold. So if you have 9 gold, you get +1 at the end of a wave. If you have 40, you get +4 per wave. This is HUGE, and in my last run I had over 60 gold towards the end. Still lost, because it was late and I completely forgot about one of my paths, but I think that managing gold well (and cycling through 10+ cards per wave with it) mitigates the randomness hugely. But it took me many runs to get that far. anthony78 Well-Known Member Nov 13, 2015 3,128 703 113 #13 anthony78, Nov 3, 2022 I like the game and just the way it mixed the genre up. But I do agree that RNG makes too much of a difference between having a very good game or a really shitty one. But I’m assuming you have possibly played a bit further? Is this a genuine roguelike where really you’re not supposed to get too far till you have unlocked more? Once playing a lot will you start to get a lot more towers and better runs? Or just more tiles with even worse rng? Curious as the game looks interesting. Haven’t been into tower defence in years. But I will almost try anything with a good roguelike element. ste86uk Well-Known Member May 9, 2012 6,774 1,000 113 #19 ste86uk, Nov 6, 2022 Finally tried this one and so far I’m not sure how I feel, I don’t mind the gameplay mostly but I don’t really like the randomly spawning new paths to have to start defending as you go.
