Let's play a game: I'll give you some puny humans, and you try to help them make it through my labyrinth. No, you won't be controlling them in battles - they'll fight automatically! My game is about strategy and praying to RNGesus, not mashing buttons. You can buy items for the humans: swords, crossbows, coffins, stale pretzels. Plus, I'll let you give them cool mutations! A few Topochlorians in the blood and some Crocodile Skin never hurt anyone. There's one catch, though: if you die, you have to start over entirely, and the whole world will be generated again from scratch. Yes, my game is a roguelike game. Well, roguelite, if you're a nerd who loves compartmentalizing us creators into strict genres. I almost forgot: my game has a multiplayer mode, too! But I'm not going to tell you anything about it, because King of the Hill is a special secret multiplayer mode that only unlocks once you beat the game. * sincerely, with disrespect for puny humans, your local evil AI: d'Spot Information Seller:tinyBuild LLC Genre:Puzzle, Strategy Release:Sep 29, 2022 Updated:Dec 05, 2024 Version:1.11.1 Size:457.1 MB TouchArcade Rating:Unrated User Rating:Unrated Your Rating:unrated Compatibility:HD Universal https://apps.apple.com/us/app/despots-game/id1558859156 metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #2 metalcasket, Sep 29, 2022 Ballsy pricing! Seems like a roguelike but too early to say. But one big problem, why is everything so damn small?! On a phone screen that is. I think this would be best played on an iPad or at least a plus/max phone. anthony78 Well-Known Member Nov 13, 2015 3,128 704 113 #4 anthony78, Sep 29, 2022 On GamePass today as well if anyone wants to give it a shot there on console. But wow is it small and kind of hard to figure out exactly what everyone is doing lol. I finished the free mode by beating the final boss. I would actually have bought it, but not at that price. I don’t mind spending. I have bought other $20 games. But this game for me anyways does not feel like it’s worth $23 plus tax. Way too many great games out there priced better. I would have probably paid between $5-$10 for it. Not really sure what it’s worth though. Even in this genre there are many games that are better priced and just as good if not better. It is fun. But wow did they price themselves out of the market for most I think. Wonder if it’s a mistake. AltsKev likes this. I’m personally enjoying it(feel it’s a little on the small side for iPhone) though I get annoyed every time I navigate away or get a phone call, the game restarts. There haven’t been price complaints from people on any other platform, and whilst I enjoy games being cheaper on mobile, I appreciate developers wanting charge full price instead of nickel and diming themselves on their biggest market. pyrrhonic Active Member Mar 23, 2015 29 0 1 #9 pyrrhonic, Oct 2, 2022 Biggest issue I have with the laughably high price point (I literally guffawed) is that this game is STILL “Early Access” on Steam, and has been for a long time. So you’re not even paying for a finished, polished game. That said, I did really enjoy it on PC, and was waiting for it to come to iOS. Just can’t justify that much of a payout. Wall Jump Games Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2020 169 88 28 Male #10 Wall Jump Games, Oct 2, 2022 Despot’s Game is not in early access. The mobile and console launches coincided with the full 1.0 release of the game. You are paying for a finished game which is the same price as it’s PC and Console counterparts, which is totally fair. Ghostdog1 Well-Known Member Jan 30, 2015 319 125 43 #11 Ghostdog1, Oct 2, 2022 I see this a bit different. Most of the other games by tinyBuild LLC cost on ios half or less compared to steam versions. And it makes sense to lower the price for smaller screens because most players are little kids with no money. So tinyBuild just doesn‘t want Despot‘s Game to be played by kids. It‘s a decision the devs have made i guess. IMHO I won’t buy any more tinyBuild games on ios because of their disregard for updating any of their games on ios. They just leave them to die once they are launched. For example Graveyard Keeper had a bug that made the game unplayable on most ios devices. Did they ever update it? No! But the PC Version had endless updates. So if I ever want to play one of their games I would choose the PC version of it. macplash, pyrrhonic and AltsKev like this. Also, during my last run, the game crashed on my iPhone 13, and it didn’t save. I hope the game saves upon beating a room, like other roguelikes do. Echoseven Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Jul 19, 2011 6,091 270 83 The red Skittle #19 Echoseven, Oct 12, 2022 More work was done to make the game run on a different platform. It’s not a matter of opening up project files, right-clicking, and selecting “save to iOS” to get it there. Someone had to do some work on it. Someone had to get paid for that work. Developers often eat those costs to get games released on multiple platforms. You could absolutely argue that more work needs to be done to make it more stable on mobile, and I would absolutely agree with you there. Anyway, I only took issue with you saying that it’s only worth X just because it was on mobile. A game that’s priced at $20 on Steam, Epic, Xbox and presumably PlayStation and Switch is not suddenly worth less just because it was released on mobile. That’s devaluing to the entire industry and a sore spot of mine when it comes to conversations about this platform. pyrrhonic Active Member Mar 23, 2015 29 0 1 #20 pyrrhonic, Oct 14, 2022 I don’t disagree with anything you’ve said, there. Oh, except that I was “devaluing the entire industry” simply because I, rando on the internet, subjectively-priced an apparently-unmodified (see complaints about user interface scaling) and poorly-tested (see complaints about platform instability) port at a inarguably-middling pricepoint for the platform (I didn’t say “free”, I didn’t say “99 cents”, I didn’t say “3.99”, even). One dude on the internet suggesting that, to him, given the press and the first-hand experience, a product is worth SEVEN TIMES what most consumers are willing to pay for a product in that market does NOT equal the fall of capitalism.
