I personally am loving it. I could tell it control must have been simplified because of the auto attacks. But it gets better later on. I would probably enjoy more control but on a small screen and mobile this is fine. Just a lot of fun. And you still need to move around a lot. It’s not easy. Lots of skill still needed. I am happy with my purchase. I may pick it up on switch too. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #8 metalcasket, Sep 13, 2022 I mean, realistically this would be a MASSIVE pain in the ass to play without a controller and auto-hit. ste86uk likes this. I do like it when there are upgrades to work on that carry through the game and aren’t per run. That said, I haven't played the original version, so maybe I'm completely missing how good it was before. Yes, there's a talent tree that adds permanent upgrades. I like to support devs / publishers like PID who have a proven track-record. I knew about the frantic gameplay so I was curious how the touch controls would hold up. I don’t remember how it feels on console, but this mobile version surprised me with its controls. You can practically fly around the room just by swiping the left control stick in the direction you want to go. The bosses are challenging and deaths so far have been totally my fault for spamming the swipe attack instead of the semi-careful planning needed to take them on. I love the skill tree! I have a bullet reflecting sword attack and a ground pound so far. Idk, I have no complaints so far. Thinking about posting a gameplay video at some point. Played a solid 6 hours of it yesterday. With both controller and touch screen. An interesting thought I had was that I would not describe it as a platformer per se. It feels closer to a bullet hell between how your movement and the enemy attacks work. Dead Cells is a combat oriented platformer. Here, touching the ground is optional. You’re dashing between enemies rocking up combos, and using your special abilities as crowd control more than damage. To that end, the auto-attack concession feels incredibly good. With controller all I do is dash to an enemy, and then hammer it with basic attacks to do damage and ‘hover’ in the air while I assess the other enemies. Auto attacking does not make the game easier, at least not past the first zone, it just feels great. Celeste on iOS would be damn near impossible. The normal game, I could see that working, but the insane movement that it requires on some of the B-sides… No way. metalcasket likes this. Playing on iPad I’d prefer some space between buttons on the right side. I’m accidentally tapping what I don’t want in the heat of battle. EDIT: so I tried it with controller and it seems like the dash is performed by pushing attack and jump buttons at the same time (mid air only?). With touch controls the dash seems to be automatically triggered when tapping jump while attacking. Which seems unfortunate as it gives me less control in general. On the other hand playing with controller is more challenging. Am I right about how the dash works or am I still missing something? I mean, there’s no way the dash can be used effectively using the left thumb considering I have to lift it up first to cancel the movement and then swipe afterwards to perform the dash. If there was a separate button for dashing on the right, that would be perfect. As a matter of fact the controls could use some tweaking in general as there’s no customization available whatsoever at the moment. And I’m all for using touch controls for mobile gaming. I’ve always preferred it. But until we can customize it properly ourselves, this game has to be played with a controller. There are places I can’t reach without necessary precision using combination of double jump and dash. I can go around or I can try and fail multiple times up to a point it gets frustrating. Not to mention how vital is to rely on precise controls during the fight. All these worries goes away using controller! It’s completely different experience for me. Sure, auto attack is a nice feature but only up to a certain point. And I gladly sacrifice it for superior control over my character when comes to dash. That being said, this is probably the only game I’m playing on my iPad using controller and actually prefer it. At least until there’s an update on the touch controls. And most importantly, this game’s easily becoming one of my favorite rogue-lites on iOS! It looks gorgeous, it runs buttery smooth, the music is fantastic, there’s a ton of upgrades and various perks during the gameplay. It has numerous options to tweak the difficulty for anyone’s liking. There’s an actual story to follow reading logs, there’s bestiary, numerous stats and achievements. This game’s a whole package. What a fantastic month or so for premium games on iOS including those under Netflix and Apple Arcade subscriptions! Makes me feel proud again for being an iOS gamer in the first place. Try moving around the screen, swipe in a direction, and then lift your thumb. Kyhra (Kyrha?) will dash, and by the time the dash completes you can have your thumb back down to resume regular movement. I’m not sure if that works too well on an iPad, but on a smaller phone it works well enough. That said, I’ve played about 12 hours so far, mostly with a controller, and absolutely agree that it’s the superior choice. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
