In a forgotten galaxy full of strange planets, a lone explorer crash-lands on one with an ancient alien secret. Venture forth from the shipwreck across a harsh, unpredictable, procedurally generated world. Harvest food and make campfires to stay alive. Craft science-fiction survival tools like teleporters and mining devices. Unearth alien technology capable of repairing the ship. Hunger, cosmic storms, hostile plant life and the mysterious ooze are among the many obstacles you’ll face. You won’t be alone! PDB (a snarky floating Personal Disaster Bot) will follow and assist you along the way. Sometimes. PDB also helps you discover the hidden lore, revealing the history of the planet as you explore deeper and deeper, assuming you can survive! OrangePixel’s uniquely designed Nature Engine generates 1000’s of planets from a vast set of environment-based rules, then drops explorers on a world brimming with potential. If a planet orbits close to the sun, intense heat, high winds, and sparse vegetation will pose a set of challenges wildly different from other worlds. Further from the sun, long nights make stamina easier to maintain, but reduced solar power turns every suit function—like scanning the planet—into a critical decision. Residual welcomes players to a non-violent survival experience with limitless possibilities and no traditional combat. Jump and descend through colorful, highly detailed pixel art evoking classic 2D platformers. Solve light puzzles to reveal secrets of a long-lost civilization. Select a male, female, or non-binary protagonist, customize survival parameters like how fast time advances, and race to repair the ship, dig up ancient secrets, or collect data entries on hundreds of undiscovered objects. Echoseven Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Jul 19, 2011 6,091 270 83 The red Skittle #6 Echoseven, Sep 8, 2022 I have such mixed feelings about this game. On the one hand, the idea is great. Exploring strange planets is fun and interesting, and feels like OrangePixel’s take on the wonder of No Man’s Sky. Who knows what strange creature, plant, or geographical feature you’ll come across? On the other, there are so few explanations for anything. And I mean anything. I died twice because I had no idea how to climb up a vine. I thought I was stuck because there is no explanation that you can grab on to a ledge. The controls are at BEST mediocre, and there is no controller support to alleviate that. And yet… and yet I’m thoroughly enjoying what is there. It just feels like a slog fighting against the game to try and enjoy that. orangepascal Well-Known Member May 4, 2010 786 103 43 games Netherlands http://www.orangepixel.net #7 orangepascal, Sep 8, 2022 Hmm the game supports MFI controllers.. never tried playing on my iPad with anything else to be honest Do they normally work in iOS games? This game does throw you a bit into a "figure it out!" situation for certain things and there's no tutorial for every little thing you can do. It's really about trying things out and survival ! Think the controls work pretty much straight forward: left+right jump, and action button. Not sure what extras you'd want to make them more then mediocre MFI controllers are supported tho (my MadCatz works fine) and makes the game possibly easier to play for some. sharfaust Well-Known Member Jul 1, 2013 339 75 28 #9 sharfaust, Sep 8, 2022 If a game has controller support on iOS, both of my controllers work just fine. Nimbus is literally made for iOS. Which is why it is strange that it doesn’t work with this game. What controllers actually work with this game then? If I would have known it didn’t have support for my two common controllers, I wouldn’t have bought this. orangepascal Well-Known Member May 4, 2010 786 103 43 games Netherlands http://www.orangepixel.net #10 orangepascal, Sep 8, 2022 Well my madcatz worked when I pushed this game to release. Echoseven Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Jul 19, 2011 6,091 270 83 The red Skittle #14 Echoseven, Sep 8, 2022 My apologies, I should have been more specific. Now that I’ve had more sleep I can elaborate. It’s not the controls themselves (which work well, you’re absolutely right) but the UI that I had issue with. I shouldn’t have blamed the controls. Here’s some specifics, because that’s more helpful: I went into the options menu before I ever started the game and immediately made the buttons bigger and repositioned them. I’d be pretty confident in saying that the default size is too small for most people. I constantly activate the radar by accident. I even moved it away from the jump button but it feels like if my thumb misses the button by a millimetre, the radar goes “you rang?”. This is probably on me though, I’ll play around with the layout. The “select” and “back” buttons in menus are far, far too small and I find them super hard to tap. Ditto for the up/down arrows. In the backpack menu, there are clear hover effects. I want to be able to hold a finger over the “items” button, for example, because I can TELL that it says something, but instead the category opens and I am looking at the items. For what it’s worth, the hover effect works fine with individual items. It feels like the entire screen becomes a “select” button in some menus. Here’s an example: I open the backpack. I tap anywhere on screen and it opens the Food category immediately. It’s not an issue so much as just weird. Like, I’m tying to press the tiny “back” button and it’s doing something unexpected whenever I mis-tap. I also hesitate to use this word, but I’m coming to despise the radar. Why is it so small!? My eyesight is absolutely fine but the pixels are so tiny. It irks me a little bit that to equip a tool I have to go into the inventory, then the tools menu, then equip the tool/mining implement/etc. This is more a personal preference thing, because even though the quick-access menu works well (and quite honestly hasn’t failed me yet), sometimes I want to run around with the Blazer equipped for no reason. Maybe it makes me feel safe. I’m also finding it really hard to tell when I’m being hurt, especially if I’m playing without sound (about half the time). And I still don’t understand the stamina/energy bar. Eating food replenishes it and from a tooltip I gathered that it recovers at night or something? But I tied sleeping in my pod during the day and it seemed to go up, but was also going down at the same rate? I just don’t understand it. And all of the above I tiredly conflated into “controls”. More accurately, it’s little annoyances about how I interact with the game and not so much the controls. — And to not be overly critical: I’m loving the exploration of an unknown world. Yonks ago I played like 30 minutes of No Man’s Sky and Residual nails that same vibe. That sense of sheer wonder, and feeling that each planet is something that existed before I graced it with my presence. Discovering random crafts as you’re exploring is a small but interesting idea that stood out to me. I love that as my character walks up to a pond with fish, they get this eureka moment of “oh hey, I should try to catch those”. Lots of little things like that. I’m also super looking forward to what happens when I eventually repair the ship! orangepascal, Anotherkellydown and #Bonk3rZ like this.
