Most of the times things just happen that are hard to keep up with. Oh, and doesn't seem like there are any permanent upgrades as such. (Apart from the bag upgrade) Just unlockables to find in runs and consumable keys to unlock doors. Definitely a platformer lover's paradise. But not for me. kozz84 Well-Known Member Aug 27, 2012 140 21 18 #9 kozz84, Sep 23, 2022 Last edited: Sep 23, 2022 I'm on the fence with this Shovel Knight. By the looks of it, game is designed with controller in mind. So it's either ipad+controller or switch. I might buy one or two months of apple arcade, play it for a bit (and other games) and rebuy it on the switch when the price drops (and the game is good). #Bonk3rZ Well-Known Member Mar 20, 2014 335 36 28 top of the world #10 #Bonk3rZ, Sep 23, 2022 Last edited: Sep 23, 2022 You spelled nightmare wrong lol. If you pause the game, options will show you an accessibility menu which might help to easen things up a little. Also I'm pretty sure there are permanent upgrades. Just need to find that smithy guy ... That being said, game is hard. I bought one of those special keys, but lost it within the first meters due to frantic action, even though I already upgraded my bag. Will stay away from that for now. You can unlock stuff from the trader (choose carefully, prices will go up after you bought something), which you then can find in the dungeon, but you have to buy them (again ...) from the gems you've earned so far in that run. I tried the sword thing, but didn't notice much of a difference. The book could probably be quite helpful, if you ever manage to find one of these relics. And if anyone could tell me what's up with those flyin bags you see in game and after you die, that would really be great ... As others have mentioned this is meant to be played with a controller as it requires precision and non of the touch and swipe controls are doing it for me personally. I just bought it on the Switch as I will be playing this game mostly there but bear in mind that a controller is a must for this title. However, I disagree. But yeah, precision is important, so they should definitely add an option to customize button size and place. (Other scheme doesn't work for me.) As it is, when things got frantic you'll often end up hitting the wrong one which sucks. A real nogo imo is that you can't save midrun. Not even after a level (part). And runs get quite lenghty after a while. Imagine having a good run, already got some good stuff, and then real life needs you. All gone. In a game like this. Like seriously? Apart from that, awesome game. So many things to discover, so many cool and/or cute mechanics, it's really fun to play. Gimme custom controls and a save option, and I'm happy. At the same time, there is a case to be made that anyone who takes iOS gaming seriously should invest on a controller — at least for streaming and for some specific gaming experiences. Logitech is releasing a $300+ device for game streaming which will not be as good as a recent iPhone with a $99 Backbone controller. And anyone who owns any console can pair up their controller with an iPad or Apple TV. I get it that people want the convenience of playing with touch controls, but maybe that’s not a necessity for every game. I should also note that even though I expect this to play nicely on Switch, the list of indie games that play better and look better on iOS is extensive. There is value in plugging in a controller sometimes, even if you own another handheld device. Not sure why some folks are so turned off by the fact that you can’t save mid-run. I mean, a decent run only lasts ~10 minutes (at least for me).. I guess it would always be nice to be able to save at any time due to it being on mobile, but I don’t think it’s meant to be that way, given the nature of Roguelites. I have to agree on the point about the touch controls. While they aren’t bad by any means, the amount of precision control required definitely makes it better suited to a controller. squarezero likes this. I was confused about that for quite a while but when I started seeing the floating bags (with wings), it dawned on me. ——————————————————————————— I discovered something really handy today but it’s a big spoiler. Don’t read it if you plan on sticking with the game for a while (or are unhappy that you have to start from the very beginning every run). If you don’t read this, just be sure to talk to everyone on the ground level from time to time. Spoiler: Whisker’s Tickets To the left of the well entrance there are people walking back-and-forth. You’ve probably already noticed this. However, different people will appear after reaching certain milestones - beating the boss and starting a new biome is one of them. If you talk to Whisker (fat dude with a red wizard hat and cloak), he will offer to sell you a shortcut for 2,000 gems (I could be off on that number). Because I had previously beaten the first level twice and got to 2 new biomes, they were available to buy. Once you buy the shortcut you just pay 400 gems to get a ticket for whichever previous level you want to start from. You never have to pay the initial 2,000 again, just the 400 for a ticket. #Bonk3rZ likes this. The gameplay is so smooth and dynamic, I love how good it all feels and how insanely challenging this all is. The variety in levels and builds is insane, fixing my only problem with Downwell. I’m too tired right now to right a proper review, but maybe in a week or two when I’ve actually beat the game. But for now that this is my GOTY right now, hands down.
