You’ve been revived in a massive underground complex and you must leave this bizarre facility. Aided by the undead Necro-Chef Simmer, you must stay safe, get fed, find a way to get out! About This Game: Dungeon Munchies is a side-scrolling action RPG with a focus on hunting down creatures, cooking them, and eating dishes to gain certain abilities. The combination of dishes you choose to eat will impact your entire play style. Big Menu for a Big Stomach: With a stomach that can only take seven dishes, you must put together a meal that maximises your abilities. Guava juice, grilled shrimp, or crab stirfry may mean the difference between health recovery, damage output or a watery shield. Tools of the Trade: Craft all kinds of deadly weapons out of the animal and plant parts you can't eat. Pair them with your favorite dishes to create the most overpowered combat combo. Something Doesn’t Feel Right... From the self-professed-AAA-license-holding necro-chef, to the diabolical voodoo “Lord of the Forest”, to the radical revolutionaries of the fruit revolution, everyone wants you to do their thing, but no one's really right in the head. What’s really happening down in this dungeon? But I have to agree — the controls are a little awkwardly placed. Unfortunately, controller support is incomplete (at least with my Backbone). It’s definitely playable, for now anyway. I want to get a little further before I give this a full recommendation. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #4 metalcasket, Jul 27, 2022 No issues regarding the controls on my end (XS) but if they’re not customizable I can definitely see how they may be an issue for some, especially on iPad. Really great game so far. ESIT: Just checked, and yeah, controls aren’t customizable. Another thing worth noting is this does produce some mighty ass heat! However, these reviews are all for the Switch version. One reviewer actually said the game feels incomplete, like it was released before it was ready. I’m so intrigued by everything about Dungeon Munchies that I’ve almost hit that buy button a few times now. Can anyone that’s played the iOS version speak to those 2nd-hand criticisms? It almost sounds like this would be the preferred way to play, since phones are more powerful than the Switch, but that only clears up the performance side of things… Edit: Just noticed MCs post about the phone heat. I’m assuming the game runs well as far as frame rate, etc. anthony78 Well-Known Member Nov 13, 2015 3,128 704 113 #6 anthony78, Jul 27, 2022 This is one of those games that I wish there was a single IAP to buy the full version. Steam version has good player feedback but the Switch version has pretty weak critical reviews (58 on Open Critic including a 4/10 on Nintendo Life). Something I’d prefer to try before putting down $12 for it. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #7 metalcasket, Jul 27, 2022 There’s definitely heat but it’s not as bad as I made it out to be. I would presume it was the combination of the download finishing and then immediately firing up the game that caused this thing to turn into a pocket heater. There IS heat though. gaberaph and Anotherkellydown like this. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #8 metalcasket, Jul 27, 2022 Having played a couple of hours, I still can’t tell you if it’s worth $12 or not. I personally enjoy the barebones metroidvania approach (the game is a sidescroller, and not a sprawling labyrinth), but yeah, at the end of the day, I would 200% go with the Steam reviews and not any reviews of the Switch version. The latter are reviews of (indeed) an incomplete version. Hell, even as I write this the game is still in Early Access and I have no idea if what I’m playing is even the first official release. Quoad Well-Known Member Apr 17, 2015 1,108 217 63 #17 Quoad, Aug 12, 2022 Well, a couple of weeks on I have approaching two hours of gameplay and some sense of thoughts about this game. Feels like missed opportunities tbh. Yes, I can “eat different bits of monsters” in order to change what I do, a bit, but these mostly appear to be incremental upgrades on earlier things. Enemies change things up a bit - I assume they continue to change things up a bit as the game progresses - but, idk, I don’t see any obvious aspect of elemental interactions?! I have a fire sword and a weaponised / damage sealing water shield. (Two of them, sort of). They seem to deal flat damage to everything. Which feels like a missed opportunity. Weapons are a bit different; a spear is long, a sword is up and down, ranged just appears to be all out crap. It is not a game that is not nice, it doesn’t feel lacking in graphics or incomplete, but I can’t say it feels very special either. Impression I get atm is of essentially linear gameplay with a few not-hugely-consequential choices. Plays as it looks.
