Just trying to add to @Brightsiderus' argument that this, maybe, should have been an update for iOS users, since the core of the game (and I say that loosely, mind you) came from the old iOS port. Remember, while not the same game as this one, the PW: AA Trilogy did previously exist on mobile, while this version introduced the series to new platforms it never previously existed on. The problem is, the old version was free, so Capcom could potentially be losing out on countless sales by rewarding those who didn't pay for the game...while at the same time punishing those who did. The point is, those who DID pay for the game are at a loss, no matter how you look at it. Or, if one is being less cynical, a way to bring classic games to new generations of gamers that has the added benefit of getting fans to pay twice for the same game. That said, the original iOS HD trilogy came out in 2013 — nine years ago. Almost two years later, the same trilogy was released on the 3DS as a full price game ($40). My guess is that most big fans of the series bought it on that platform, then went on to upgrade to the Switch three years later. When the Switch version of the trilogy came out in 2019, those same big fans likely bought it again for the full price ($60). And even though the Switch remaster was based on the same assets as the 3DS version, those fans had no expectations that they would get it on their Switches as a “free update.” This kind of double dipping is par for the course in the console world. I never bought the 3DS version of the trilogy, mainly because I already owned a cheaper version on iOS. I was tempted to get the remaster on Switch a couple of years ago because the reviews were good and I really liked how it looked on the wider screen. But again, I held off because my less-attractive iOS version was still there if I wanted to replay them (and had been updated for wider screens, sort of). Now, nine years after I bought the HD trilogy, the remaster is here. Would I appreciate it coming as a free update of the original one? Absolutely. Do I expect that kind magnanimous gesture from any game publisher? Of course not. The fact that both are on iOS is a red herring — the iPhone was a different beast 9 years ago. I should add that I could have paid $100 for the same games on the Nintendo ecosystem — on iOS, it was $38. We live in a world where Sony is planning to release a remaster of The Last of Us for the ten year anniversary as a full price ($70) game and the only thing fans are complaining about is whether the new graphics are gritty enough. On consoles, the kind of free lifetime support we seem to expect on iOS happens only on games that thoroughly botched their original release (No Man’s Sky). Heck, I just had to buy a new lawnmower because the battery on my six year old model has been discontinued. It kinda sucks, but it is the way commerce works today. The one thing I blame Capcom for is delisting the original HD trilogy from the AppStore (even from previously purchased, as I just discovered this morning). That’s unnecessary and just not cool — people should be able to keep playing it, even if Capcom has decided not to support it in the future (though I wonder if Apple had threatened to remove it if they didn’t update it regularly). Anyway, sorry for the long post. I do see your point, but I think we’re judging the iOS experience using unreasonable standards, based on the state of the gaming market. Boardumb likes this.
