I wrote a long-ass essay about them in detail, which disappeared into the void, so here’s a summary instead: You can’t play offline. Lap times are uploaded, and other players’ ghosts are downloaded constantly. It’s blazingly fast when it works, even on my rural internet measured in kb/s. But as soon as it can’t check in; boom, no game. — It’s very much a live-service game in its early stages. There’s daily challenges, daily races against other players’ ghosts, and “coming soon” regions with the promise of new tracks and (presumably) new cars. — Related to the above, there’s an additional currency: gold. Gold is unlocked via daily challenges, daily races, and leveling up. It is ABSOLUTELY not required, since it’s used to purchase cosmetics for your car like paint, decals, patterns, and so on. You can, however, also purchase cars. As far as I can tell, these cars are also cosmetic, but still… For reference, I’ve gold-started about 10 easy tracks, completed one day of daily challenges, leveled up to level 2, and have placed well in the daily race. I have 235 gold, 65 of which came from the daily race. There are four cars to buy, two at 2250 gold and two others at 3000. — There’s no controller support, but it’s not that kind of racing game. I imagine I’d appreciate a more nuanced analog control scheme, but really, it’s not that kind of game. And with that said… This game is utterly freaking fantastic. It’s hard, it’s fun, and when you nail that one turn you’ve been struggling with, it feels incredible. There’s a banging soundtrack and the presentation is stellar. It runs buttery smooth (iPhone 12 pro), restarting is fast, and even the battery drain has been less than I expected. Honestly, it’s so good that I don’t care about any of the points above in any critical capacity, though I accept that others might. This game gives me the same feel back in the League of Evil speed run days, when I would run and re-run levels to shave off 1/10th of a second and set a new high score. I am spellbound and can’t get enough. Sadly, it also means that this game isn’t quite for me, since it’s completely time-trials based. I don’t mind the odd time-trial event, but for me trading paint is a big part of what I enjoy in a racer. That said, this is enjoyable enough for me to stick around for a bit. Agree with the sentiments above. Good game and IAPs are just for currency that buys cosmetics. I also do wish they had “real” races and not just against ghosts. Then again, I should have known this would be the case being a game called Hot Lap. Still pretty fun and addictive. Maybe if the dev does well enough they’ll do another game using the engine with racing against other cars. solarnya Well-Known Member Jul 22, 2015 906 287 63 Male Close to Tokyo, Japan #12 solarnya, Apr 13, 2022 I hate today's daily Chq Well-Known Member Jul 20, 2013 441 60 28 #13 Chq, Apr 13, 2022 Why? solarnya Well-Known Member Jul 22, 2015 906 287 63 Male Close to Tokyo, Japan #14 solarnya, Apr 13, 2022 Jump and narrow road suffered me much yo... There are 2 gaps on the track — the second one is the one that was getting me every time. There’s also a jump right before a curve that was sending me off the track every time. BTW I like the fact that you can drive around the grounds when you fall off the track. Now that I’ve played this for a few days, I’m seeing a fair amount of Trackmania here (without the track building portion). These more complex daily tracks are a bit like racing puzzles. Proper racing lines are far wider than I thought, but they really work. Drifting around turns properly can save a huge amount of time. Here’s a video for drifting and racing lines that I always, always come back to because of how clear it is. The game doesn’t give you a line to follow, so it helps to really understand how and why they work. https://youtube.com/watch?v=5ljCXKW0Mgo And combine that with: End powerslides early. Tap on the opposite direction of the turn to straighten the car and end a powerslide. The sooner the slide ends, the sooner you start accelerating again. It seems so simple, but I’ve overtaken ghosts on a straight stretch because I ended a slide earlier and accelerate faster. I’ve set some fast times, but no world records yet. Some people out there are crazy precise. Closest I’ve come is within 1/10th of a second! solarnya likes this. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
