The gameplay is lovely and I wish I had a chance to enjoy it more often, but the UI just misses the mark, effectively ruining the experience for me. The way the game works is you’re presented with boards of varying shapes and sizes and tasked with planting specific amounts of certain crops in order to prepare a recipe. Every plant behaves in a unique way. Carrots, for example, are planted left to right from your starting square until they hit a barrier; pumpkins grow in a “plus” shape and so on. There are seven plant types in all and there’s a handy reference guide, but for some baffling reason you can’t access the planting guide past level 5. After level 5, the guide is replaced by a button that goes back to the menu. The menu, much like the rest of the game, is lovely. There’s little animations between screen changes and a lot of care went into it, but each screen transition takes a few seconds, which ultimately starts a very frustrating chain of events: I start a level, work out what I need to do, plant a few crops, fill up the board… And then realise I can’t remember how cauliflowers work. So I hit the menu button, wait 4-ish seconds for the animation, hit the reference button and wait a couple of seconds for the guide to open. But wait, there’s more! The guide starts you on page 4 of 7. So then I scroll right, one at a time, waiting for each plant to play it’s little animation, then realise that the cauliflower isn’t ON this side. So back I go, through every lovely plant with their lovely animations, one at a time until I find the cauliflower. “Great”, I think, “that’s how it works!” So then I go back to the main menu (a few seconds), into the level select screen (a few more seconds) and load the level I was in before (a couple of seconds again)… and have to think about the level again… except by now I’ve forgotten how the bloody cauliflower works again! It sounds like nitpicking and eventually I’ll learn the plants, but it gets so many things right that this little chain feels maddening! I don’t even mind the menu animations, but at the very least don’t take away the guide button from the only screen I’ll ever need it! Anotherkellydown and Shimm5 like this.
