A left handed option, if you will. It's a well made game as you would expect but F2P with ads if you want extra items. Because of who the developer is, I paid for the first $5 IAP that popped up giving me some permanent unlocks, 2000 tickets, and to show my support. At that point I didn't realize just how expensive - in tickets - some things in the game are. I also watch ads to further show support - something I don't often do in freemium games if I have the choice. Because of who the developer is, I'm quite upset with the next push I was presented for another $5 IAP purchase: "Gain 5000 Tickets + 2500 Machine Capacity + 50% Machine Fill Rate" 2000 tickets cost $23.99, so getting 5000 for $5 a heck of a deal, right? It would cost almost $60 to buy 5000 tickets normally. That's a savings of $55! Plus the Ticket Machine will be able to hold 7500 tickets and the refill rate goes 50% faster. Wheeee... I expect if I were to purchase this "heck-of-a-deal" and drain the 5000 tickets into my paltry 2258 ticket filled wallet, that after the ticket machine fills up with 7500 tickets, I would receive yet another "heck-of-a-deal" offer to once again level up my ticket machine which would in turn give me 7500 tickets, while even further increasing the capacity, and the fill rate. And so on. I have not chosen to do that, but I can't say I'm not tempted. Every time I get get tickets now that the ticket machine is "full" the tickets are added to my lesser stash and matching tickets *plink* off the full ticket machine, disappearing into the void. Visually and audibly reminding me that I'm wasting them if I don't upgrade the Ticket Machine. That plays directly into my FOMO, no doubt as intended - otherwise why make a big deal about it? Heck, the tickets even sparkle. Shiny. Tempting. Because of what this developer has chosen to do in regards to monetization of their game, I am no longer playing this game and I will never support them again. I regret supporting this game for as many days as I already have. --- (edit) I see the YouTube video link I included that breaks down predatory monetization practices in video games is now gone from my post. So instead, I invite you to search for: "The Addictive Cost of Predatory Videogame Monetization" I was about halfway through that video when I wrote this post. As I got further into it, I saw more monetization practices that the game is built on, like "Offers & Scarcity" and "The IKEA Effect" and - in the case of the Ticket Machine and the cost of tickets - "Anchoring"... "When we don't know the price of stuff, the first price we hear suggested for it becomes our anchor, and then we compare everything to that." eg. 2000 tickets cost $23.99 - making 5000 tickets for $4.99 a "good deal." They are even both on the same screen - the regular ticket price and the offer - so there's no chance you'll miss seeing just how great a deal it is. Ijipop and AltsKev like this. My go to now is Idle Slayer. Monetization done right and at least you can slay monsters, upgrades feels satisfying and after removing the ads you get a premium feel. Catching boxes is quite frankly not that fun. I get why they chose it for the game of the week but I wonder if they still play it one week later…. Meh. Sad cause I loved his previous work.
