Ever since I read about how Tinder has a rank/score system invisible to the user I've been curious about how Tinder commodifies/depersonalizes/gamifies human interaction. Tender: Creature Comforts explores that in a way that is engaging. Dates occur in real time so when you schedule a date with someone in Tender you need to be in game at the time the date is scheduled... Dawdle in messaging and characters notice. There was a character I matched with who always replied with one or two word replies or emojis and my character eventually gave her this long heartfelt speech about he felt it was inappropriate to continue talking to her because of the disparity of where they were in their lives and the other character's lack of emotional availability. He concludes by calling her an emotionally unavailable bird. Her response, 'You think I'm a bird?' I expanded her profile which I hadn't done when swiping and when I could see the full picture it revealed she was a gryphon, not a bird The game gave my heartfelt speech an ending that indicated I hadn't even bother considering who she was because I hadn't. Well worth the time, narratively rich and so far it feels like an indictment of the way dating apps gamify people. L.Lawliet and ColeDaddy like this. The art and writing are adorable, until they aren’t, and you’ll feel angry and sad and hurt and awkward and all the other emotions that come with navigating dating apps irl. 1: This game is full of amazing details that make it feel realistic. If a character texts you because they’re on their work break, if you don’t get back to them quickly enough they’ll be busy. 2: This game is broad and includes a lot of really interesting and unexpected topics. Along with all the things you’d first think of when it comes to exploring dating, like getting hung up on exes or having different aspirations, there’s also a lot of deeper subjects like emotional cheating, fetishisation of minorities, non-monogamous relationships, etc. 3: This game knows how to make you feel all the emotions. It’s a funny game for sure (there’s a gag I’ve passed that made me laugh out loud), it’s got lots of cute moments, but when things don’t work out or when someone has an unexpected reaction to something you say, you really feel it. There’s also a lot of heartbreaking fourth-wall breaks regarding player freedom. One I remember clearly is when every single option you have to say reads exactly the same: ‘It never gets better’. Another one is where if you choose the option ‘I think I’m in love’ your player character types something a lot less committal/honest, something like ‘haha you’re funny’ or whatever. Idk. This game really feels like something special to me so far. Check it out, but just know that I personally find it quite emotionally draining and I really wasn’t expecting it to feel so realistic and personal. Brian Cartwright likes this. I’ve had a match continually reschedule a date and at this point I suspect they don’t actually want to meet. Someone matched with me seemingly just to unleash the most toxic bile in chat and another character made me play an arbitrary guessing game before unmatching and this was after it felt like there was a connection. Bought the game because I was in the mood to play the dating game without real-life consequences, but not even a day in, it doesn't feel like a game at all. It feels real, with real-life consequences. Then again, what was I expecting when I deliberately swiped right on my ex? I'm both beyond excited and nervous to see how this plays out.
