Brightsiderus Well-Known Member Feb 1, 2017 2,234 540 113 #3 Brightsiderus, Apr 12, 2021 well, I can’t say that it’s simpler than other strategies, but it’s great in its own way. You get villagers and need to distribute them to different roles. The more you discover, the more roles you get: hunters, fishermen, farmers, Warriors, scouts, etc and you need to choose wisely, because the winter is coming with lower food gain and faster wood depletion. V Kuolema Well-Known Member Jun 30, 2011 431 27 28 Canada #4 V Kuolema, Apr 12, 2021 So having beta tested this, I can say it’s completely worth the price and then some. It’s indeed a more simplified RTS experience but it suits the mobile platform perfectly. The maps are divided into separate areas that you uncovered with scouts and can then colonize for food or some clans allow you to colonize via other means. Each space can hold 3 buildings (your starting space can hold 5), but you can upgrade each space to hold one more by paying a sum of Krowns (the games version of gold). Each clan is pretty varied in their play styles and despite the game being somewhat “dumbed down” it still allows for a engaging experience. If you watch some videos on the PC version it’s the exact same experience and will give you the feel and if it vibes with you. The touch controls are one of the best set ups for a game. They really made the game feel like it was made to be played with touch controls. The game does use a bit of battery but that’s too be expected. I didn’t think I’d be as into it as I am but I put well over 40 hours in. anthony78 Well-Known Member Nov 13, 2015 3,128 703 113 #5 anthony78, Apr 12, 2021 Simplified sounds great to me. I enjoy RTS games but even Company of Heroes 2 was a bit difficult to control on iPhone IMO. Going to check this one out. Echoseven Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Jul 19, 2011 6,091 270 83 The red Skittle #6 Echoseven, Apr 12, 2021 Heh, “simplified” makes it sound like a lesser experience, but it’s far from that. It’s very clever in its approach to everything from controls to mechanics that really makes it a joy to play. It encourages a somewhat sped-up play style: expansion is key and while you can turtle down and hoard your resources, you generally want to keep moving and exploring/fighting for new areas. These new areas often give you access to new resources and, more importantly, more building space, which you can then roll right back into more expansion. It’s a ton of fun and I mentioned to @metalcasket that it makes for a perfect mobile game. Probably better on mobile than it is a PC game! aconfusedkender Well-Known Member Sep 28, 2012 1,362 122 63 Oil & Gas Kendermore, Ansalon #7 aconfusedkender, Apr 12, 2021 Well you’ll convinced me. I pulled the trigger and from the screenshots seems like a nice game I’m looking for. While these below are not dealbreakers I’m still curious what I just paid 8 bucks for Does stuff happen when you’re offline? Is this a beatable game (is there an ending)? If so we talking 4-6 hours or 20-30 hours? Are there achievements? Permanent upgrades kinda thing (new game +)? Echoseven Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Jul 19, 2011 6,091 270 83 The red Skittle #8 Echoseven, Apr 13, 2021 Nothing offline, you’re either in there or you’re not. There’s an end, it’s a series of campaign missions that follow a story. Hard to estimate how long it’ll take you - especially if you go for bonus objectives on each mission, which are unlocked after beating the mission for the first time. There’s also one-off skirmishes you can play beyond that. Closer to 15+ than 4 hours though. Yep, there’s achievements tied into Game Center. Don’t think there’s permanent upgrades, it’s not a roguelite kinda game. brerlappin Well-Known Member Feb 10, 2009 722 30 28 #9 brerlappin, Apr 13, 2021 Are there big differences with the clans? Is it advisable to get them all? Hopefully the price tag is worth the product. anthony78 Well-Known Member Nov 13, 2015 3,128 703 113 #11 anthony78, Apr 13, 2021 It may be simplified but it’s still a lot chew on. Maybe more than I expected. Anyway, selecting units isn’t that easy. They’re so tiny and zooming in works strangely. You’d think you could pinch outward from where you want to see but it seems flakey. Company of Heroes 2 did unit selection better. Seems like a good game. Just a bit difficult with the touch controls. I’ll give it more time. RebelBinary Well-Known Member Jun 11, 2012 160 7 18 Software Developer/Designer Ottawa, Canada #12 RebelBinary, Apr 13, 2021 Love this game on PC, still play it regularly despite multiplayer issues and ppl rage quitting all the time. An honest to god RTS with no iAP on the App Store is blowing my mind. In regards to others stating this is a simpler RTS than one would find, I COMPLETELY disagree and instead think this is a bit more in-depth than your average RTS, I’ll elaborate: you have multiple resources that you have to balance; happiness, food, wood, krowns, and ore. All of these resources must be BALANCED, because when winter hits, it’s a totally different monster entirely. Consumption of wood and food both increase, and if you go into the winter with low stores, your Vikings will start dropping like flys; getting sick, getting unhappy, and straight up dying of time is left to go on. You can absolutely play yourself into defeat if you aren’t paying attention. My first skirmish game I got absolutely crushed because I failed to realize winter was just around the corner, and the other clan that had prepared by equipping their warriors with warm clothing absolutely massacred my sick and starving Vikings. That’s one way you can die, I’ll let you discover the others. I will say this tho: if you are a strategy game fan, or have any love for RTS games, you NEED to buy this one. It’s BEAUTIFUL, the lore is awesome, and it plays well. I don’t care to dive too much into the controls, other than they work well, and I’ve yet to encounter anything that really turns me off. It’s awesome. Highly recommend it. buy it. Play it. Watch your Vikings die, and then do it all again. adin, CrayonWarrior, Skall and 4 others like this. anthony78 Well-Known Member Nov 13, 2015 3,128 703 113 #15 anthony78, Apr 14, 2021 After spending more time with the game, I’m not going to sugar coat it. Seems like a great game but it’s not a good iPhone game. It’s too difficult to select people. I’ve had instances where they appear to be selected but don’t move to where I want them to. And yes, you can magnify the menus and use zoom. But it just isn’t ideal at all on a phone screen. The tutorial is also pretty lacking. I’d personally say it’s probably worth it on an iPad, but I can’t recommend it on an iPhone. FWIW, I have an iPhone 11. Talbs likes this. pathogen541 Well-Known Member Jun 19, 2016 503 355 63 #16 pathogen541, Apr 14, 2021 Yes, this is generally not an ideal style of game for a phone, but they have every unit on the right hand side of the screen assigned an icon, selecting said unit requires only that you do just that: tap their icon. I’ve never had any issue selecting troops, workers, etc. nor have I had any issues with people not following commands when issued.... not to mention you can assign your entire warband to separate parties or select every troop you control with the “shield” button... play on an IPhone 12, 2x UI scaling. Plays like a dream in my experience. There’s a post where someone did a review of it and said they’d give the iPad version an 8/10 and the iPhone version a 4/10. And the buttons on the side only select entire groups of each type. If you want to move one or two units to move to a training building for example, you still have to select them individually. Anyway, after playing this and Company of Heroes, I think CoH works better on iPhone. Just my 2 cents.
