You get more options to earn money and various other items and effects once you start putting in new buildings. It gets more interesting when you are able to build specific types of boxer type such as combo or high defense. the Shop is vital to boosting early game boxers in my experience since trainers and gym features aren't that leveled up yet. Dont forget you can assign boxers to specific coaches and to floors.
