I have enjoyed the “upcoming” thread. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,716 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #6 squarezero, Jan 21, 2021 So far, so good. This is very much in the “collectathon” vein of 3d platformers. Graphics are good, the frame rate is consistent, and the controls are responsive. Camera can have a bit of jitter at times, but nothing terrible. And, of course, tons of Spongebob silliness. Mind you, I’ve put only 15 mins into it. agreen437 Well-Known Member Jun 12, 2014 1,702 222 63 #7 agreen437, Jan 21, 2021 Last edited by a moderator: Jan 21, 2021 Major battery drain. I'm pretty much at the same spot @squarezero was at when he posted his first impressions, but so far this is an overwhelmingly fantastic port. I'll post some detailed impressions either later today or tomorrow, but I'll leave this thread right now by saying one thing: As a port, this may be the best one (solid, solid, solid and laden with everything you could possibly want) we've ever gotten on iOS. squarezero likes this. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,716 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #9 squarezero, Jan 21, 2021 Agreed. That was with about 15 minutes of playtime. Since then I've sunk (pun intended) a considerable amount of time into Rehydrated and I'm glad to say that the sentiment remains true. While Rehydrated isn't the greatest game in the world (and it certainly isn't going to be for everyone), you still need to check it out. Super Mario 64 got the Collect-A-Thon ball rolling and while Nintendo nailed the concept with their first try, there was a weird-ass time where everything we got on the original Xbox and PlayStation 2 was a Collect-A-Thon...3D platformers where progression depended on collecting items (not grinding, mind you) to fill quotas. The original BfBB was one of those games. While not an original concept and certainly not at the time, it did things right, used the IP to the max and was generally well received. I played through it countless times on Xbox after discovering my love for all things SpongeBob way too late in life (I must have been in my twenties), but much like my classic yellow SpongeBob face tee (seriously), I misplaced my Xbox disc and kind of forgot about BfBB entirely. Fast-forward to iOS times and while literally every SpongeBob mobile release has garnered a massive groan from me, it was only until Rehydrated was announced on PC and console that I discovered people other than me actually loved the original. It had become a cult classic. Excitement ensued! I picked up the game on Switch...and played it for all of the 5 minutes I could care to hold onto my Switch. While being a mobile gamer first and foremost, the thought of a mobile port never even crossed my mind. However, months later, something about @Brightsiderus posting an upcoming release thread for a SpongeBob game tickled my fancy. On one hand, it was probably going to be yet another F2P monstrosity...but on the other, Brightsiderus doesn't post about those types of games. Excitement ensued again! I headed over to the then ill-titled thread, smiled, edited the thread title and then went to the App Store and swiftly pre-ordered Rehydrated. You know how I said the game wasn't going to be for everyone? Brightsiderus himself claimed the game was pretty lame. Instead of getting mad, I got it. Collect-A-Thons were a product of the time. While there are bonafide classics in the genre (Banjo Kazooie, the Spyro games and the fellow cult classic, Psychonauts), it's a genre that is basically left in the past. I legit can't even name a modern Collect-A-Thon other than Super Mario Odyssey. So, yeah...Rehydrated got slammed by mainstream reviewers claiming it wasn't worth bringing back, but the fan response was a whole different monster. Close to 7000 reviews on Steam and a 10/10 average? An entire subreddit dedicated to the game? Twitter replies to HandyGames fawning over the mere existence of this very port? Good stuff! So, what is Rehydrated? It's the original Battle for Bikini Bottom with a fresh coat of paint. Yes, all of the good and all of the bad that could possibly come from 20 year old innards. Having to go to a bus stop to change characters instead of a more modern approach? Check. Invisible walls? Check. Inaccessible areas that you think are very accessible? Check. A camera that will occasionally (nay, frequently) test your patience? Check. Run away yet? No? Good. What you get for $9 (compared to its $30 console brethren) is a huge 3D platformer that respects your time (again, no grinding) with tons and tons of exploration, memorable boss fights and the flat-out insanity that is SpongeBob SquarePants. There's 10-15 hours of content (depending on if you're a completionist) including stuff that wasn't in the original, an entirely voice-acted experience and everything that was included in the PC/console release minus (sadly) co-op mode and (thankfully) a not-so-great multiplayer mode. Gone are the drab, muted colors of the original version and instead Bikini Bottom is gorgeous, vibrant, inviting and how you probably remembered the original in your head. What's best about this version is the sheer effort HandyGames have put into the port. iCloud? Check. Controller support? Check. Multiple control schemes? Check. Apple TV version included? Check. Graphics settings (which are not even in the other versions)? Check. There's literally no feature left to ask HandyGames to implement and it puts to shame the post-60fps Bloodstained update that a game can be released in such a complete state at launch. Super impressive stuff. Oh, and save for, arguably, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee and Suzy Cube, there's really nothing like this on iOS. It's a little bit modern gaming, a little bit gaming history...and living, underwater-breathing proof that iOS can still be a thriving, serious platform for premium gaming that can sometimes take on modern consoles. If only Apple would take gaming on iOS as seriously as HandyGames and few other developers do one day. Wishful thinking. Anotherkellydown, Boardumb and ColeDaddy like this. Switch port is not even close to mobile port. Though I still don’t understand why they collect underwear for health and why they haven’t added Russian voiceover. It even has Japanese and German spongebob(which is very close to Russian in voices) I’m feeling like flying Sandy, lol. Just the whacky humor associated with the series. Russian voiceovers you'll probably have to contact THQ Nordic about. I don't know if the voice actors for every language in the game are the characters' original actors, even though in English for example (to the trained ear) some of acting isn't by the original crew.
