Can private investigator Miles Fordham find justice for his clients and track down his partner's killer before his entire world comes apart? • "I fostered a lifelong love for the adventure genre, culminating in a Purple Tentacle tattoo (Day of the Tentacle, duh) on my upper left arm. So I’ll be playing Lamplight City, too. Trust." - Rock, Paper, Shotgun • "Overall, this game has a lot going for it, and I encourage you to check it out even if you’re not an adventure game buff." - Hey Poor Player ABOUT THE GAME The Gateway to Vespuccia, the City of Air and Light, Lamplight City - the thriving port city of New Bretagne is a beacon of progress and industrial advancement in the New World. Yet beneath the promises of a shining 19th-century future, the city rests upon foundations of poverty, class struggle, and crime. For police detective turned private investigator Miles Fordham, Lamplight City's shadowy corners are just part of the territory. But with his former partner constantly speaking to him from beyond the grave, his grip on sanity is slowly loosening. Can Miles find justice for his clients and track down his partner's killer before his entire world comes apart? Lamplight City is a detective adventure set in an alternate steampunk-ish "Victorian" past. FEATURES • Be the detective you want to be. But prepare to face the consequences. Investigate crime scenes, interrogate suspects, get information by any means necessary. Follow the law or make your own rules, but how you choose to act will affect people's attitudes towards you. • Five cases to solve, with multiple suspects, false leads, and different outcomes. Never find yourself stuck in a dead-end situation. If the case becomes unsolvable, simply move on to the next one. The story will adapt based on your choices. • Single click interface with no inventory. Gather clues and documents in your casebook for review. Item manipulation is handled via a context-sensitive cursor. • A fictional city with four boroughs to explore, each with their own unique flavor. Players will visit each of these boroughs throughout the game, exploring themes such as class divide and the public's fear of emerging steam tech. • Inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens. • Meet over 50 professionally voiced characters. • Original score by Mark Benis. I’m kind of a sucker for steampunk. A detective solving mysteries, helped or hindered by wry comments from his disembodied assistant. The main character even looks much like Jeff Randall. I like that it’s fairly lite on the puzzles. There are a few, but not a continual succession, and no having to combine objects. It mostly revolves around interviews so it helps that it’s fully voice acted. The setting looks more Dickensian than steampunk, but I spotted one airship so I guess that counts. The first case is good so far though I’m stuck on how to get into the tomb. Edit: Okay, tomb raided. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #5 metalcasket, Oct 31, 2020 Welp, y’all have my attention. A 72% Metacritic score is by no means a bad thing, but I was initially on the “I can probably live without this” side of things. Truth be told, while I was raised in the golden Point and Click era, combining random items to do random things (with hundreds upon hundreds of walkthrough pages littering my bedroom), I find myself rather...impatient (?) toward the genre these days. If you’re telling me I can have the gorgeous aesthetics of P&C titles combined with murder mystery/visual novel-esque gameplay...I am totally, totally on board with this. macplash and Asp like this. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #6 metalcasket, Nov 1, 2020 Nothing but good things to say about this so far, but hooooooooooly crap does it use up battery and turn my XS into a portable heater. Roughly 20% of battery with 30 minutes of play. Asp Well-Known Member Aug 3, 2017 769 196 43 #7 Asp, Nov 1, 2020 That’s unexpected. No battery drain or heat on my iPad. I only get that with hi-res 3D graphics, whereas this has lo-res 2D. Presumably the phone version is different. metalwastebasket Well-Known Member Jan 5, 2017 161 55 28 #8 metalwastebasket, Nov 1, 2020 It's really weird. I've never had substantial battery drain and heating issues with anything other than this XS and I know the X has similar issues (as @Rocksaint's got the same Apple Arcade BS issues and whatnot). I mean, GTA: San Andreas is near unplayable in that regard, whereas every device I've played it on prior (including on an ancient Note 3) has never been hot to touch. Rocksaint likes this. ASHGAMES Active Member Feb 6, 2014 35 5 8 #9 ASHGAMES, Nov 5, 2020 We can confirm: No inventory puzzles. Strictly detective work. Do your interviews, collect clues and suspects and draw your conclusions. Accuse the right suspect and move on - but here is the twist: You are also allowed to accuse the WRONG suspect. The game goes on and will not tell you but it surely changes how things go from here... Asp and metalcasket like this. We have no indication that our code may be causing such battery drain and we didn't see that on any of our devices. But we never say never. So it may be interesting to look at this a bit closer. Could you send an email to [email protected], describe the problem and let us know your exact configuration (memory of phone, iOS version)? We can then forward this to the developer and check if we have any idea what this could be. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
