Impressive graphic design and faster than fertiliser off a shovel. It’s somewhere between arcade and simulation with the vehicles being very twitchy to control, but after some practice and getting the hang of handbrake turns I’m winning some races. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,499 1,027 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #7 squarezero, Nov 27, 2020 Only a couple of races in, but so far so good. 60 FPS action, fun aesthetic, decent touch controls with controller support, well designed tracks, and a cool warp mechanic. Not much of a tutorial, but the game is pretty intuitive. Vehicle upgrades are simple (maybe a tad too simple — we’ll see). On the first two races, the main objective was impossible to fail, but the competitor were fast and fairly smart. I think because the graphics are not actually 3D, but 2D sprites made to look like it. Still very convincing though. In one race I somehow managed to be heading the wrong way, and then it’s almost impossible to turn round. Definitely need a reverse gear. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,499 1,027 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #13 squarezero, Nov 27, 2020 The game is definitely 3D — just cell-shaded. And the color palette being used and the sense of speed are pretty cool. Yet, the buttons on the right didn‘t make any sense to me and loading times wear unbearable. This game flew off of my devices pretty quickly. Stronsay Well-Known Member Aug 6, 2015 936 196 43 #15 Stronsay, Nov 27, 2020 Not much use if you’ve deleted, but the 3 right hand buttons are boost, warp, and drift. Boosts are collected from track markers. The warp button only lights up briefly, but pink orbs floating above the track give advance indication of warp points. Drift is what I call handbrake, to assist with sharp turns. Yes, track loading takes around 25 seconds, probably due to high detail. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,499 1,027 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #16 squarezero, Nov 27, 2020 I kind of appreciate the fact that the game doesn’t hold your hand, but I can see where a tutorial could be useful. You are right about boost and drift, but warp works a bit differently. Boost gets activated when you drive over a crystal. But as you get near opponents, you’ll see a target reticule light up — that’s when the warp button gets activated. When you hit it, your vehicle launches itself at the opponent, and you essentially replace them in the race order. It’s a fun variation on the standard kart racer weapons. And it adds a tactical component, since you have a choice of boosting or warping. Load times get better as you race on already used tracks. But I would agree that load times are not great (they’re about 15 sec in the iPhone 12). Stronsay likes this. bx59 Well-Known Member Dec 2, 2016 238 115 43 #17 bx59, Nov 27, 2020 Huh. I've just watched a couple of videos to see how it runs on the various devices, and even on the latest iPad Pro it runs at 30. I really wonder if A14 makes that much of a difference, especially from an A12Z. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,499 1,027 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #18 squarezero, Nov 28, 2020 If I remember the figures correctly, the 12 pro is about 40% faster than the 11 pro. I’m not the best judge of FPS. But I know that Grid runs at 30 and this looks a lot smoother. At 60 you also get that “filmed on video” quality, which is what I see on my phone. They all felt almost impossible to lose. Don’t know if I want to continue as everything kind of feels the same few tracks....meh so far.
