Root is a game of adventure and war where 2 to 4 players battle for control of a vast wilderness. The nefarious Marquise de Cat has seized the great woodland, intent on harvesting its riches. Under her rule, the many creatures of the forest have banded together. This Alliance will seek to strengthen its resources and subvert the rule of Cats. In this effort, the Alliance may enlist the help of the wandering Vagabonds who are able to move through the more dangerous woodland paths. Though some may sympathize with the Alliance’s hopes and dreams, these wanderers are old enough to remember the great birds of prey who once controlled the woods. Meanwhile, at the edge of the region, the proud, squabbling Eyrie have found a new commander who they hope will lead their faction to resume their ancient birthright. The stage is set for a contest that will decide the fate of the great woodland. It is up to the players to decide which group will ultimately take root. I don’t know if this is just a perception, but it appear to load a bit quicker than the other apps (or the visual candy keeps me distracted ) The game itself is not too complex, but because of the asymmetrical nature, you need to learn the rules for each faction. This results in a quite significant tutorial, which in my view is excellent. I was a bit tired when running through it, so it seemed like a lot to take in, but it may have been me (and I quite like a board game with lots of details!) The game actually plays out fairly quickly in the end - its first to 30 VP, so the strategy involves balancing creating VP and combating other factions to get control (so you can accrue VP) or to muck up their plans (i.e. cause the Eerie to fall into turmoil and lose all actions). Each turn plays out over a day and your actions depend on our resources and faction (but assume 3-6 actions of drafting, moving, building, fighting. I think it will have tons of replayability and a group of players who have played a lot will have some deeeeeeep strategic battles. At the moment, I’m a numpty and I’m happy just to get to the end of a game (losing to medium AI) I buy 99% of iOS board games and this one will be top 10% once I move onto MP (which I’ve not tried yet, but assume to be as good as other Dire Wolf implementations) andsoitgoes, phlo, Son of Anarchy and 1 other person like this. It’s losing 1% battery every 2 minutes on my Xs Max. hedgey Well-Known Member Apr 20, 2012 99 6 8 #7 hedgey, Sep 29, 2020 My wife and I are avid board game players, but we mostly play games 2 players. The board game version of Root loses a lot with only 2 players, so we have only played it twice. We love the game, but don't own it because it just loses a lot when only playing 2 players. That being said, I am over the moon about the app. It lets us play the game using IA players, or we can even go find an online game. I've played it several times with IA, and I can't tell you how excited I am that I'm able to play Root this way. The game does an amazing job capturing the experience of Root. The visual, as said above, just push it over the top. The game is not very complex to learn. The tutorials are great to learn the gameplay and the different factions. If you like mobile board games, get this one. Even if you know nothing about the physical board game. I too play about 99% of mobile board games, and this one is easily in the top. Fingers crossed they look into making some of the expansions into DLC content.
