Basically a FTP classic Zelda-inspired RPG with bits of Secret of Mana, Grandia, and Gurumin thrown in. Story driven, with nicely-sized levels that have been actually designed for enjoyment, not grind. Reminds me of the later Zenonias but much more polished and fun. As with any FTP games of this kind, I’m wary of the coming paywall. So far the game has been pretty generous, and from the store reviews it seems that IAPs are not necessary. But who knows — they could be shills as far as I know. Still, it’s nice to see a game of this type that doesn’t follow the 2-fights-then-boss formula and doesn’t take itself too seriously. People have been raving about this game all week from the various channels I follow since its global release (I believe this week...could be wrong on that). Definitely Link To The Past inspired but done much better than most would expect from a gatcha game. A bunch of classic puzzle elements and a very charming cast of characters. Just of note it really looks like the same people behind Crusaders Quest are behind this game despite the completely different gameplay. I haven’t played Crusaders Quest in a quick minute but the similarities in art direction and “style” are too much of a dead ringer to be just coincidence. anthony78 Well-Known Member Nov 13, 2015 3,128 704 113 #3 anthony78, Aug 2, 2020 Been playing this for about a week and really like it. I think it’s just a gatcha style game that you may want to collect characters for PvP. But as far as I’ve seen I don’t think IAPs are necessary for single player. The story is charming with lots of cute references to other games (including Zelda, of course) and nice level / puzzle design. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,716 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #4 squarezero, Aug 2, 2020 That’s good to know about the difference between the gatcha gameplay and the single player story. And yes, the meta references are cute without getting too distracting. I can see myself putting a bunch of hours into this. I can honestly say I’ve never felt the need to spend hundreds on the free to play games that I like and games like Guardian Tales don’t seem crazy needy unless your that person that genuinely has an issue of not being on the top of the leaderboards. Most games that come from the east are much more free to play than not. The big problem though is the auto play is usually out of control which is fortunately not an issue here. Jstorm Well-Known Member Feb 2, 2020 1,082 474 83 Male Employed Earth #7 Jstorm, Aug 3, 2020 Well, even though the game is supposed to be globally available, it isn’t available for me. Looking at the purchase menu from the game website, I am assuming this is a hero collector? When the game sets a tier for characters, that’s an alert sign for me. anthony78 Well-Known Member Nov 13, 2015 3,128 704 113 #8 anthony78, Aug 3, 2020 Hero collection mainly for PvP. Again, it seems perfectly playable so far in single player without spending a dime. But time will tell. As of now, I’m loving it. Sladecut Well-Known Member Jul 4, 2019 45 12 8 Male #9 Sladecut, Aug 4, 2020 Very good! And I haven’t found one of those horrible autoplay buttons yet!! adamphetamine Well-Known Member Jan 4, 2011 968 31 28 Programmer/3D Modeling Bethlehem, Pa #10 adamphetamine, Aug 6, 2020 Definitely need higher tier heroes after world 5. Sure you can use low starter tier heroes and evolve them but it's going to be a lot harder. I haven't spent a dime and I have 3x unique 3 star heroes, 1 5 star hero specific weapon and a bunch of 4-5* unique/legend weapons. I've had enough free gems to roll 7x 10pulls. As for the game... Love it. It’s full of iaps and is FTP, but I gave it a go anyway (unfortunately my view about premium iOS mobile gaming is waining these days). It’s a fun game so far. Well presented, the quality is very high, the conversations between npc’s is quirky but fun. Love the graphics. Controls are excellent and the game offers a lot of options customising not normally seen in mobile games. Gamepad supported but definitely not needed. There are a lot of hidden areas and items which makes playing interesting. I have quite enjoyed my initial time spent playing so far. So wish it was available as a premium game..... but that’s for another debate, in another place. I have full intentions to resist the temptation to put any money into it though (more due to principle rather than desire). JasonLL likes this. anthony78 Well-Known Member Nov 13, 2015 3,128 704 113 #13 anthony78, Sep 13, 2020 I hate F2P gatcha style games but adore this game. Haven’t spent a dime nor do I think you need to if you play just single player. So many cute references and fun gameplay! JasonLL and stubbieoz like this. L.Lawliet Well-Known Member Jun 28, 2011 6,405 420 83 #14 L.Lawliet, Sep 13, 2020 I really want to try this based on all the amazing feedback it has gotten but I just can't really stand online single player games unfortunately. I know there's a pvp section but generally I never touch those in all my games. And with it being KKT, I feel like a lot of these games will disappear after a couple years or so if they don't make money. JasonLL Well-Known Member Feb 21, 2014 546 106 43 Male #15 JasonLL, Sep 13, 2020 I actually like a few f2p hero collectors but I do agree that this game is on a different level than most f2p hero collectors and I appreciate that it feels like an old school super nes game with satisfying gameplay. Definitely worth checking out especially for those that feel jaded about the “auto play” of most modern collectors on the AppStore and you’re right there’s very little reason to spend unless you want (which can be good/bad for the dev). JasonLL Well-Known Member Feb 21, 2014 546 106 43 Male #16 JasonLL, Sep 13, 2020 The controls feel amazing in this game and they blow away most premium action games handily. I usually dislike v-stick but this game does that control style flawlessly. I wish premium devs would put the time into making the touchscreen controls feel as smooth as Guardian Tales.
