1sland is our take on multiplayer free games, with carefully crafted aesthetics, no violence, no microtransactions, and no ads. A beautiful wholesome game, but free. We call its genre "Paddle Royale", a relaxed way of competing, where you have to find a single island (worldwide) in order to rank up and become the best sailor. The game is structured in seasons, matching real weather ones through the year, and the aim of the game is becoming the best sailor on a global leaderboard. In order to do so, you have to find the 1sland, which changes position every few hours (6h), and is placed in the same spot for everybody around the globe. The first one to find the island each round, earns the ability to customize it, so the rest of sailors that arrive there can admire it. Between rounds, you can engage on mini-games and activities that also help you rank up. A key aspect of this concept, is the lack of micro-transactions and ads. We did not want users to feel they had to pay for every aspect of the game, but we also didn't want to add hideous ads into our game aesthetics. That's why we have created a Season Pass system (called Paddle Pass), that when purchased, unlocks some cosmetic items (including an exclusive boat that can not be purchased otherwise) and gives you some in-game currency. It can only be bought once per season, and is intended to support the development of the game and creation of new content. We feel it's a fair way of making use of in app purchases, avoiding excessive expense by users, and so avoiding the <pay to win> mindset. Every new season, those passes change color, format and gifted boat, so you can collect them through time. 1sland nada studio, sl Welcome to “Paddle Royale”, a new chill competition genre where you need to find an island faster than anybody. The competition resets every day, and it's time-based: You can join and race whenever you want! But that’s not all. You are given a Home Island that you can improve and customise at will! Start by building something, planting some trees, or modifying the landscape. Then you can go fishing, wander around the ocean, collect wood to craft items, or just relax. Anything you can think of, can be done. And we are constantly improving it with new content! Some tasks you can do to relax: • Decorate your island with 100+ items. • Grow your own crops: Corn, grapes, peaches... • Modify the layout of your island. • Collect wood and stone to craft cool items. • Complete daily jobs to get rewards. • Go explore the ocean. • Fish and catch many species. • Much more! We carefully crafted 1sland to make the whole game a really zen experience, and we are super excited to hear your feedback. Tinsel Well-Known Member Dec 8, 2008 508 5 18 #8 Tinsel, Jul 21, 2020 I really, really wanted to like this. It has an amazing concept and immersive graphics. The calming nature is a nice change of pace. Unfortunately, the cons started to pile up rather quickly. 1. I started with 4 hours before another hunt started. I like the concept but it needs to happen more often. 2. The races are fun, but the catch them all mini game is quite frustrating; I really felt like I needed some or all of the upgrades (or pay for a better ship) to even have a chance here. 3. Fishing is the very opposite of the calming nature the rest of the game is trying to cultivate. After 4 or 5 times furiously swiping, I avoided them altogether. 4. There isn’t enough to do. I enjoyed wandering around, for a little bit, and smashing ice and gathering orbs are nice, again, only for a short time. I hope it does well! sergioab Active Member Oct 21, 2017 44 7 8 Architect Spain #9 sergioab, Jul 21, 2020 Last edited: Jul 21, 2020 Thanks for taking the time to play and give me your feedback @Tinsel ! Let's see what I can say about each one of your points: Even though we have thought of increasing the number of rounds per day, we don't want it to become excessive. We run some Testflight testing, and decided to go for 6. Some people enjoy the calm before the storm, and this way you don't have to worry about rounds other than a couple of times a day. Also, it kinds of stops being important, if you can just compete, let's say, every hour. They are not regional nor local rounds, but global ones, so the whole globe is (kind of) waiting for the big time, to compete for the same island; so once they found it, and are able to customize it, the point is people can see it for a period of time. But yes, sometimes we wish they were less spaced as well. Races and mini games are maybe a little too hard, you are right, and we are thinking of tweaking them down a little bit. Nevertheless, the speed of your rivals is adjusted to yours, so you don't need to upgrade to win. Actually, they go faster when you upgrade your boat! Note that winning a race gives you points to rank up, so you could go up in the global leaderboard just by winning them (being this the reason why they are not super easy) As for fishing, sad to hear that! We spent a lot of time trying to make it engaging, not too difficult but not too easy; maybe what we got wrong is the tutorial? Doing the swipes "wrong", even if it's just a little bit wrong, can make you lose... But it can't be super easy, because sometimes you fish oysters! And those are precious items to be exchanged for upgrades... Let me think how to make this experience smoother. Finally, regarding what you can do, we are going to start adding more and more minigames (like races) to keep people engaged. But the idea is you can either gather oysters to be ready for the next round, either you wander to calm your mind, or just close the game and wait for the notification! Anyway, thank you so much for your feedback, and please feel free to make any suggestion to make it better ROGER-NL Well-Known Member May 21, 2012 4,030 340 83 Male Gamer. Well done! Great execution and art direction too. Because I really enjoy this game and see potential, I hope you don't mind me sharing a few thoughts. I understand the game mechanics behind it and how it's important to make certain missions difficult but I also think the Catch All missions are a bit too difficult that I just want to avoid them altogether. As for the fishing, is swiping all there is to it? I also feel swiping furiously just goes against the very calming ambience of the overall game. How about a reel system like many other fishing games in the appstore? It's not about simply swiping down all the time but letting go in order to lure the fish in, then having to reel it in at some point. Randomizing such intervals might be more interesting and less boring. That being said, I love the mini tasks like travelling distances and collecting orbs. It encourages the player to roam around but I feel like there should be more variation in the "oceanscape" — more than the whirlpools and the icy areas. The selection of boats look great and I look forward to seeing more ships to the line. With regards to the ship upgrade, is there a point where you can max out on them? If so, is there a feature to encourage players to continue grinding? I'm not sure if I understand the island royale concept as well as I should. Do all players online automatically enter the game, or do we have an option to stay out of it? I'd also love to see the royale rounds more often, because even thought the game is relaxing with its pace, I would still love to have control over how often I can participate in the Island Royale mode. Despite the game name being 1sland, the frequency of the player seeing an 1sland is just too sparse at this point. icoker Well-Known Member Mar 26, 2013 652 10 18 #16 icoker, Jul 24, 2020 Last edited: Jul 24, 2020 Just a few questions: - Is following the birds a wise thing to do if you're out of flares and wish to find an island? - Where does the whirlwind take you? - What is the point of waving or dismissing other stationary players? - Is there a point in fishing (besides for enjoyment) after you get all 12 species of fish and receive the 1 oyster reward? jacobinn Member Nov 5, 2017 10 2 3 #17 jacobinn, Jul 24, 2020 Hey icoker, brother/dev number 2 here! Thank you so much for your words and for taking the time to explain your thoughts, we really appreciate this type of feedback. Regarding the missions, our roadmap includes adding more missions on the way so that you can engage in those of your preference. We are always tweaking things to make them reasonable in terms of difficulty. Just a small hint, try describing circles around the boat following whatever direction you choose! But do not change direction! The fishing thing started as a mini side thing, but as the game evolves we see a lot of potential in it. So we are already thinking abut ways to make it more engaging and more “realistic” in a way. We’ve also been suggested that using the fishes for certain things might be a nice idea (exchange them or collect them for other missions). That’s a great point, adding storms and more fauna that you can interact with is on our roadmap, so it’s great that you mention this. Thank you! Yes yes, absolutely. We have a bunch of new boats in the oven already! By now, speed-wise there are 2 engine upgrades, and that’d be it. We are thinking about some other features like an anchor that would help you stay put during a storm. The nice thing is that there are different levels in the game (linked to the amount of miles sailed), this levels unlock the ability to get all the boats (which have intrinsic features such as orb magnet ability and ice breaking strength…). Our idea is that the Royale concept is always on, but it’s up to the sailor to engage in it and try to find the island. You might prefer to skip a couple rounds so that you can save a couple of oysters to upgrade your boat and get a decent amount of flares to find the island the next round! Once the island is discovered by any world player, the next round of discovery is automatically set 6 hours later. That doesn’t mean that the round is over, you still can and should actually find the island to get a good position in the global ranking! Now, regarding the questions of your following post: -Hahaha that’s neat that you mention it. Not yet, but we’ve been thinking about it as a sort of easter egg, maybe not all birds but certain species… but shhhhh -Whirlpools move you between 1 and 2 miles in any direction around the whirlpool randomly (it might be a pity but sometimes it gets you closer to the island!) -We wanted to make some type of interaction between users, sometimes is nice to feel there are other sailors playing with you in such vast ocean. The dismissing button sends them 2 miles in the opposite direction but only if you are not playing in that very moment. You can be a good folk and just say hi, or feel a bit devilish and send them away We are exploring more complex interactions in the future (such as item exchanges, or things like that… could be a nice touch). -Don’t give up once you get the 12 species! Keep fishing because fishing oysters is relatively common! Hope to have answered some of your questions and thoughts, but please let us know if there are sany more 1sland things on your mind. And thank you so much for being so thorough in your feedback! icoker and ROGER-NL like this. jacobinn Member Nov 5, 2017 10 2 3 #18 jacobinn, Jul 24, 2020 Dang Roger, you are becoming a sea beast!
