It invites you to a very unusual journey to a charming and wacky 3D world populated by 2D characters. AWAY is a short light-hearted story mixing action, silly discussions, rogue-lite elements and smashing a bunch of cute creatures to overcome every obstacle in your way. A 3 to 5 hours journey around a colorful world featuring unique visuals, with 2D characters living in a 3D world. Unravel a funny and light-hearted story, with just the right pinch of rogue-lite elements. Recruit up to 8 quirky characters, each with their own unique abilities An anime-themed soundtrack composed by Kazuhiko Naruse and sung by Aya Majiro! “Dear Villagers, we may have released some evil forces while working. Sorry, be safe”, say the Labiworks signs all around. Your neighborhood seems to require some serious monster cleaning. AWAY could have been one of these bloody FPS if only you were not a harmless kid armed with... a wooden stick. As you throw yourself into danger investigating about missing parents and very strange events happening, you will have to find allies. Luckily enough your neighborhood is full of odd but powerful characters. You may not be deadly but you’re super good at making friends! From the mine-throwing angry tree to the missile-launching robot or the fireballing yet short-sighted sorcerer, you’ll be in good company! See the world through your allies’ eyes, first person style, whenever you call upon them. Beware, it can be quite a visual experience! And don’t exhaust them too fast, kiddo! AWAY: Journey to the Unexpected was made by a two-person team composed of Aurelien Regard self-made video game developer and Jim Gennisson. I’d be dishonest telling it’s a bad game, because there’s potential in this project, but my feelings are of something not completely finished and certainly not a perfect QA. Controls are not the best I’ve seen around in a FPS. Aiming at the enemies it’s not so easy while maneuvering at the same time the camera (an option for auto-aiming maybe?). From what I’ve seen I can’t say if it’s 30fps locked, and anyway the settings menu is very weak and just very basic options are in there. Honestly and IMHO I can’t recommend The game at this time. Maybe consistent update could be an improvement, in that case i could consider to buy it again. The graphics are as advertised and the gameplay is pretty fun. Bummed to hear about some of the issues from others in this forum because it is a well-made game. I've unlocked two other characters, one who provides ranged attacks and the other I'm about to find out. Overall, this is an entertaining game well-worth the price of admission. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,716 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #10 squarezero, Jul 2, 2020 I think the issue is that the frame rate is inconsistent. In several play sessions it’s been fine, but then the next time, it’s nearly unplayable. That said, there’s a lot to like here. First person platformer is always dicey, but they’ve pulled it off well here. Once you bring in the other characters, there’s some nice variety on the combat. And the way the rogue-like elements are implemented works well. Definitely willing to give more time . I'm not implying that mobile gamers should settle for less, but regarding the reviews, I definitely feel like AWAY is a better fit for mobile, where there's no oversaturation of first person games and whatnot, and the shorter length won't necessarily be seen as a negative. I don't necessarily need to do a deep dive on the gameplay, because I'd be retreading squarezero's post, but the opening animation deserves special mention, the 2D art against the 3D world is awesome and the it's just a charming game altogether. My problems with the game, unfortunately, mirror the complaints in this thread. You'd not be frowned upon to think this is the most graphically intense game on the App Store. It isn't. It's just...yeah, that frame rate. It slows to an effing crawl on my XS at certain points. Also, it's one hell of a battery drainer! A little bit of optimization would go a long way, but there's definitely something to like here. OddAlun likes this.
