So far I've managed to sink a few hours into this and what were initially supposed to be first impressions have turned into a full-fledged 2000 word review, so maybe we shouldn't do that and instead try and keep this as short as possible? Yeah, not happening. I've had my eye on EoA for years now, but the project's been in the making for so long now that there have been literal years between me remembering it was a thing. Nearly 8 years later it's actually out, and awesomely, Crescent Moon's been along for the entire journey. Josh could've easily dropped publishing this and moved along, yet even with the rise and fall of Forest Moon Games, he's still here. Alchimia, at the same time, haven't exactly had the best journey either…what with a failed Kickstarter campaign (which, tbh, had I known existed, I would've actually backed) and all. You know how they say "It's all about the journey, not the destination"? When you've got a destination that's this good...screw that saying. Upon first launch to the moment I was sold, there must've been a total of 10 minutes. That's not to say the game starts off on the wrong foot. There's significant world-building, cutscenes, mature unforced dialogue and a humble start that gets you invested, while still leaving space to get to know the characters. The graphics are warm and inviting, but it’s not until you start exploring the interiors of a castle that you realize just how downright gorgeous the game is. Everything’s right there in the App Store screenshots, but this combination of Leisure Suit Larry (Love for Sail), Broken Sword and Monkey Island art is just such a winner. You guys now know that the game’s 3 GB installed (nearly 10 times the size Alchimia thought it would clock in at nearly 10 years ago), but there have got to be hundreds upon hundreds of hand-drawn backdrops that absolutely justify that size. No matter how far I’d progress, I would be hit by more and more art. An 8 year development cycle allows that, however, and when each piece of art is better than the one it was preceded by, you know you have something special in your hands. The music, similarly, is another highlight of the game. Combined with the graphics, it’s easy to forget you’re playing an Action RPG. It feels like a crossover with a Point ‘n’ Click adventure (and that’s why I think the game’s so accessible). From majestic castle tunes (seriously, I can’t think of the proper term for this and it’s been hurting my brain) to dark and looming space-y battle music, to summer-y island vibes, the soundtrack is absolutely all over the place (in the best way possible) and makes for a complete experience. However, you can’t have a complete experience with bad combat, right? While misleadingly one-dimensional at the start, it doesn’t take long before you’re slotting weapons of your choice into what’s essentially a combo sequencing mechanic that’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. Basically, you tap one button for your main attack, and based on the weapons and order you’ve set in the sequencer, you’re greeted with dedicated attacks (and animations). It’s perfect for mobile. Along with your main attack you’ve got slots that are filled with unlockable spells and whatnot. Both characters you take control of (Eldric and Rin) play differently. Eldric’s the close-combat dude while Rin has ranged attacks, and while they share the same tech points to improve their stats, they both have their own aforementioned unlockable spells. That allows you to personalize the game experience as much as you want, and while I’m not really highlighting everything, the game has tons and tons (seriously…TONS) of merchants, unique stat-changing items to equip, buy or sell and everything you’d associate with RPGs. It never feels overwhelming and the UI and menus are perfectly balanced. Similarly, the controls are snappy, responsive, satisfying to play with and both Rin and Eldric move at a refreshingly brisk pace. There’s just way too much to talk about, to be honest. From the way Eldric and Rin’s relationship blooms, the witty banter between all the characters, the appropriately timed sickness joke, mini games, the massive overworld with tons of varied locales, boss battles that channel 90s video game logic, the variety of objectives to complete over a 25-50 hour playthrough...it’s just one big obvious labor of love put together by 2 people over the span of nearly a decade. While the effort alone would be enough to reward the developers with your hard-earned money, the actual game speaks for itself. It bridges the gap between a 2012 and 2020 App Store and seriously feels like it could be a Game of the Year contender no matter when it was released. Remember guys, this was supposed to be released around the iPhone 4s lifecycle, yet here we are and literally nothing feels outdated. The game’s fresh, modern (yes, even X device fullscreen support) and a joy to play. Nothing but the highest recommendation from me. To the boys at Alchimia (and Josh for the unwavering support), I salute you. Oh, and a shout-out to GameSalad! What was once the biggest joke and black sheep of the App Store…I won’t even get into their past. Let me just say that when I initially saw that unmistakable spinning loading icon, my heart nearly dropped…but when everything I’ve mentioned above is not even hindered in the slightest by GameSalad (seriously, we’re talking transitioning between tons of locations!), someone’s done their homework. I don’t know if it allows for iCloud and/or controller support, but as it stands, I’m super impressed with the stability, framerate (could be mistaken, but I think this is running at a solid 60fps), battery consumption and heat production brought by a modern GameSalad. Bravo! Get this folks.
