I’m on the edge of buying, but the price is a little high & some of the reviews from the Steam/Switch ports aren’t great. Does anyone have any impressions of this game? Any idea on how much content there is? Ringerill Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2012 315 170 43 #3 Ringerill, Apr 23, 2020 Same here! They say it’s on sale but I don’t even know how much it costed at first (I hate -10% sales asking you to rush and buy the game). If anyone played it and knows how deep this game is, could you share it with us? They say it’s easy to play but that for instance would be a problem for me since I prefer challenge and not grinding in dungeon crawlers. It’s shown that there are 100 characters but what does it really changes? Are they just skins or do they change the actual gameplay? I’ll try to look for reviews on other websites and write a summary if I find enough info. BillyOceansBlues Well-Known Member Mar 1, 2013 188 7 18 #4 BillyOceansBlues, Apr 23, 2020 Yes, the original f2p version was very charming but downright predatory with the paywall. So much so that even a "fully unlocked" version gives me pause. Will have to wait for impressions. TheSilveryWolf Well-Known Member Dec 1, 2015 143 14 18 #5 TheSilveryWolf, Apr 23, 2020 Edit: wait a sec, $8 is a sales price? Holy cow. I've played the free version before. It's a very cute game; if you enjoy pixel art you'll like the artstyle. However, the description says it's "simple" and for "anyone" and that's very true. It's very, very casual. I played it when English first released around a year ago (back when it had 0 reviews) so I don't totally remember everything. But I believe it's turn-based and reminded me of the enchanted cave 2 in that respect. I didn't play it a lot. Also the only reason I got it back then is because the only IAP were ad removal and characters. There weren't all these other IAP. Also I remember enjoying the music. Although the game seems to have blown up and it looks like the devs took advantage of this and even though the "premium" version is a bit expensive, I do appreciate it being there. Keep in mind this game was translated (I believe it's japanese) so we could be able to play it. I'm not a dev, so I have no clue if that's the reason for the cost or if they just want to jump on the popularity it seems to have gained. I'm just trying to keep an open mind. Also, no matter how expensive... the devs still were thoughtful enough to make the game again, without IAP, and release it as a separate version, which is rare for freemium games. As for how much the game is worth: I think there's enough content to justify $8. I think it's polished enough. The character design, music, etc. are very polished. It's just not that deep (at least from a year ago). The mechanics and gameplay are designed like a FTP game so it's consequently pretty shallow. If you're the kind of person who likes FTP mechanics but wish the micro-transactions weren't there then this is for you. If you want something mindless while you're listening to a podcast and you happen to like anime-style games, this is for you. Also, there seems to be a difficulty wall in the game to encourage spending, and I really hope that's more balanced in the premium version. And that certain purchasable upgrades can be earned in-game. I would be upset if that weren't the case. It is clearly a game modeled directly from the original Shiren the Wanderer or Torneko: The Last Hope Mystery Dungeon games (before Pokemon went and screwed the series up, grumble grumble). So for $8 you get all of the characters (they're still locked behind basic milestone achievements in-game but no further real cash transactions required), no ads, nor, as far as I can tell so far, even a way to USE real world money in the game. If you want a particular fun item from a shop you'll need to earn it in-game. Besides the basic gold you can get clearing dungeons, I see there is a Medala currency. No clue how Medala is earned, but it is clearly some rare resource in-game that can't simply be purchased with real money. TheSilveryWolf likes this. TheSilveryWolf Well-Known Member Dec 1, 2015 143 14 18 #8 TheSilveryWolf, Apr 23, 2020 Medala in the free version is earned by watching ads. So are exp boosts. How about "item insurance"? That's another IAP. Do expeditions still take a long time? Edit: do you have max storage now? Or is it unlockable? LordGek Well-Known Member Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Feb 19, 2009 12,282 141 63 Software QA Engineer Saratoga, CA, USA #9 LordGek, Apr 23, 2020 No clue about item insurance or exp boosts. I've only tried 1 Expedition so far, at the lowest starting tier, and it was instantaneous. I've received bonus Expedition tickets as rewards for achievements, but even with tickets, you can't do more than 3 Expeditions a day. Medala definitely is awarded via achievements but not clear if other means (like found via Expeditions or directly in dungeons). Storage starts at 100 and can be expanded with gold (5k gold expands it 20 slots at a time with a max of 200). @Ringerill That 100 characters is referring to the number of baddies, as there are only 4 playable characters in the game with pretty minimal differences. I definitely find it weak that your default character, Claire, doesn't appear to have any unique advantages over the other 3 characters, whereas the other 3 at least each have some unique perks to make playing them interesting. They could have at the very least given Claire a little more Strength, or HP since she doesn't have any unique skills. As it stands, once you unlock any of the other 3 characters, there is no reason to use Claire again. Ringerill and TheSilveryWolf like this. LordGek Well-Known Member Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Feb 19, 2009 12,282 141 63 Software QA Engineer Saratoga, CA, USA #15 LordGek, Apr 25, 2020 No story or dialog, just pure old school Mystery Dungeon action over increasingly tougher and bigger dungeons. I like how, just like the old Mystery Dungeon games, with each successive dungeon, you'll have access to more items, more monsters with special abilities, and new a tougher boss. I also like how in the first couple of dungeons all items are pre-identified, but as you get to the later dungeons, you'll find more and more items un-identified until you use them, with many of them being cursed or harmful (but then again, just remember nasty potions can always be tossed at baddies). Also cute is how the game encourages replay of each dungeon via a star system. 1 star for clearing the dungeon, 1 star if you managed to clear the dungeon without bringing any of your previously saved/bought items (the more dungeons you unlock, the better range of items you can purchase in the town shop), and 1 star if you clear the dungeon from the mid dungeon checkpoint without items (once you've made it at least halfway through a dungeon you'll have access to this shortcut and can start from that point, appropriately leveled, with or without outside items). So if you cleared a dungeon, starting without outside items, you could earn 2 stars right off. On top of this, the game tracks extra challenge stats for each dungeon, like if you cleared the dungeon without using any weapons or healing potions. Lastly, for Speedrunners, there's a 30 level dungeon whose ranking is entirely based on the real time you take to clear the whole thing (lower time the better, of course). One big difference with the Alchemic Dungeons series that's both cool and at times kind of tedious, is its elaborate crafting system. While it's been a while, as I recall, you need to make most of your items in the game by refining raw resources into better things and then combine those to make even cooler items. So, unlike this game, you aren't as reliant on the RNG Gods, as you can craft what you need...but at the same time A LOT of the gameplay consists of running around scavenging resources to craft better gear. Sometimes it's nice to not have to bother with all of that crafting nonsense and find gear already made. I had played the Puzzle dungeons and got as far as 15/20 in about 20 minutes. I have played all the easy dungeons 6 levels and gotten the three stars and that took an hour or two so I was getting the feeling that there was only 10 normal dungeons and the speed run left, so not a great deal left to do. I will take another look at it and see if I can get a better understanding on how it will last a lot longer.
