This game had a ton of pre orders and hype with certain mobile gamers outside of Touch Arcade. I didn’t even know about the game until a week ago after I started to follow a couple of YouTube channels that specialize in eastern mobile RPG’s / collection games. Haven’t tried this yet but I hope this game is translated better in game. Definitely looking forward to trying this. Darkfyra Well-Known Member Jan 14, 2017 157 6 18 #6 Darkfyra, Feb 27, 2020 So far, none of the sentences match what is said, though maybe playing in french make it look worse. Aside for that, the game play amazingly well on my iPad Pro, no auto combat is a breath of fresh air, the character creator finally allowed me to make what my Fyra would look like in human form, no auto combat in sight and I do enjoy that there are dialogues choices and being able to interact with everything. Unfortunately, for me, it's also boring as hell. I can't connect with the setting, find the "story" pointless, and it's very slow. Lots of tapping, skipping dialogue, uninspiring combat. It’s not the loot and level MMO that I was expecting going in. It almost feels like a telltale game with ARPG elements especially during the first hour and if the story/characters don’t connect with you I can certainly understand not sticking with the game. It’s definitely going to be a divisive game for many but on the other side of the coin that’s a good thing since it may give it a chance to stand out from the crowd. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,716 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #10 squarezero, Feb 29, 2020 Best thing I can say about this game is that it’s the first of these hyped Asian MMOs that has kept me playing for longer than 30 minutes. In fact, after I fired up the game for the first time, I played till I drained a full battery — a couple of hours at least. Then again, I’m a sucker for story-driven RPGs, and all I need from combat is “not annoying” and “not automatic,” which Dragon Raja manages quite well. As to the story, it’s basically anime Harry Potter. So far the characters are distinct and make sense (though I’m sure they draw from anime tropes), the stakes are a high, and the drama is effective (at least for me). That puts it above 95% of the MMOs out there. I’m finding it well paced, too. The “slow” part that Palanthian described does a great job setting up a big dramatic moment at the end of the tutorial section. My biggest complaint is the obscurity of IAP system. So far it seems that you can play through the story without spending money. But it’s not quite clear what you get with the intro packs (besides the gems, cash, and outfits). Before you wrote that in your post I was going to update my previous impressions post with “The story, so far, feels like a cross between Harry Potter and The Matrix.” [ever so slight spoiler ahead] especially after arriving at Cassell College the potteresque influence kicks in big time for me. I will admit the games story, at times, is a bit confusing but that may be that I’m not used to this style of narrative. Although the story has stayed interesting and I am looking forward to what’s going to happen next. The biggest plus though is the characters and their personalities which is definitely not a strength I thought this game would have going in. Luminous, Caesar, NoNo, Anjou ,to name a few, all have larger than life fun personalities that have taken me by surprise in the early part of the game. Just being able to remember their names and personality quirks and overall liking most of the cast is a big step up from other mobile MMOs that I’ve played. However, it’s new so it could still improve later. JasonLL Well-Known Member Feb 21, 2014 546 106 43 Male #14 JasonLL, Mar 1, 2020 I’ll be honest though I never feel the need to compete in most Asian MMO games so I never get tempted by the p2w aspects of these games. In my experience most eastern MMO’s are generally free with lures to attract big spenders (which is in stark contrast to most western f2p/p2w). IAP in most of these games is optional for casual play and the player can sometimes grind for those overpriced IAPs that do exist. I may throw a tiny amount of money at a MMO/character collector if there’s affordable IAP but it’s done out of gratitude if I am enjoying the game. What usually gets me is I generally get bored and move on to something else. So far I’ve been taking it slow in Dragon Raja due to RL time constraints with my character only at lvl 40 which is like lvl 4 in other RPG’s. I can see myself looking for my next fix once I get through with the story but so far it’s been engaging. Hope they are able to keep the story content coming though since this game leans heavily on the narrative. Thanks! I will definitely try this out. Darkfyra Well-Known Member Jan 14, 2017 157 6 18 #15 Darkfyra, Mar 1, 2020 I’m 100% a PVE player who do not care about PVP at all, here for the journey, to have fun, for the story, immersing myself in the world but pay2win unfortunately make progressing tedious and it quickly feel shallow and repetitive. My gold standard for what a mmo...rpg should be(I find that the RPG roots are way too often forgotten, all is now about rushing to the endgame and then complaining that there is no content and mmo are dead, even altering games to make leveling faster as for some obscure reason the endgame is the true game and the journey is the tutorial, my solution would be to inspire yourself of The Secret World, not the mess Funcom did to it then abandoned) If I go in a virtual world, it need to not just be repetition and grind designed to frustrate you and make you pay real money, I want the adventure, have a reason to care. It may be because I was mainly raised on singleplayer console titles and fantasy books(also definitely will try to find the books this mmo is based on) but for me the appeal of them is the possibility of a journey where your team are not just NPCs but real flesh people...maybe make friends along the way. JasonLL Well-Known Member Feb 21, 2014 546 106 43 Male #16 JasonLL, Mar 1, 2020 if you don’t mind me asking where’s the pay2win or is there p2w if you’re just looking to go through the story? Generally I usually stick around until I complete the main campaign then I’m on to something else. In your previous post you mentioned “is a pay2win mess and after level 60, there is nothing to do except dailys.” so I’m assuming you hit the end of the main story content without spending. If there’s high lvl PvE after the campaign that is designed to break the wallet I usually just ignore that stuff since I view that as a form of indirect PvP. I agree with you that mobile MMO’s, especially Asian MMO’s, can do a much better job at providing a full story experience. My favorite PC MMO of all time is Lord Of The Rings Online which I used to play religiously back in the day and to be honest no mobile MMO has come close to the exploration, actual player companionship, or story that provided. I just feel , from the little bit I’ve played so far, that Dragon Raja makes some steps in the right direction even though there’s still a long way to go. Darkfyra Well-Known Member Jan 14, 2017 157 6 18 #17 Darkfyra, Mar 1, 2020 I did not played past the early hours, I looked online to find that out. Like the story seems to peel from a bunch of timetables (like... high fantasy meets modern fighter jets mixed with futuristic AR/cities... but somehow actually works? I love the graphics and the opening hour was super strong and really thrusted me into the world and made me want to continue playing. I do like how it's not just an auto MMO, it does have place to place free movement but combat is all player only. Super rad. Palanthian Well-Known Member Feb 19, 2016 142 2 18 #19 Palanthian, Mar 4, 2020 Ah, a kindred spirit. I started LOTRO with Mines of Moria, played it for 5+ years, started to lose interest after Rohan (the mounted combat system didn't work so well). In the early days, you had to group up to get past certain content, I remember Siegecraft in the North Downs being a nightmare, but that's where all the fun and excitement was. Then the difficulty level was gradually eroded away. Yes, the story telling was second to none, I particularly recall the tale of Narmeleth, which was an original composition by the LOTRO team. I created so many characters, in so many classes, loved the Warden, and ever since I've been chasing that "feeling" again. Realistically, there's no way to get it back. All of these part time mobile MMOs are just that, throwaway games you play for a few weeks and then drop. LOTRO was almost like having a second life, I do miss it.
