The king is dead at the hands of Viking invaders. Hope is a distant glimmer in the fog, fading fast with every passing moment. As you rise to take your father’s place as ruler, it will fall to you to stage your defenses. But make no mistake – this is no fight for victory, but a desperate grasp for survival. Bad North is a charming but brutal real-time tactics roguelite. Defend your idyllic island kingdom against a horde of Viking invaders, as you lead the desperate exodus of your people. Command your loyal subjects to take full tactical advantage of the unique shape of each island. Everything is at stake: fail, and watch the blood of your subjects stain the ground red. It’s charmingly brutal, with beautiful procedurally-generated islands and adorable soldiers juxtaposed against the blood-stained realities of war. You control the broad strokes of the battle, giving high level commands to your soldiers who try their best to carry them out in the heat of the moment. It’s accessibly deep, with simple player inputs masking a dynamic combat simulation that make it inviting to new players while challenging veterans. Keep fighting, warriors. Not for power or riches or glory, but for hope of peace to come once again in the harsh lands of the Bad North. Key Features REAL-TIME TACTICS ROGUELITE: Position and relocate your troops to fend off the Vikings, who each have their own counters to the threats you pose. Pick your battles and plan your evacuations carefully! Lose a commander and they’re gone forever; lose everything, and it’s game over! INTELLIGENT UNIT CONTROLS: You command the broad strokes of your defenses and monitor positioning — your soldiers do the rest, navigating and engaging intuitively in response to the situation at hand. PROCEDURALLY-GENERATED ISLANDS: Each island is both stylistically charming and unique in its layout. Plan your strategies around every nook and cranny, for you only get one chance to save them from the enemy invasion. UNLOCKABLE UPGRADES: A stronger, smarter defense leads to greater rewards. Use these to develop your subjects from a ragtag militia into seasoned warriors. I wish you could select your units via icons on the left side of the screen, like you see before the battle begins. Not sure why it goes away in combat but it's hard to find the commander you're looking for without constantly clicking on everyone. Selecting the next group just to see the name requires clicking on nothing to deselect the current group, so a lot of pointless clicking. vonknut Well-Known Member Dec 5, 2013 220 3 18 #3 vonknut, Oct 15, 2019 Crashen on iphone 6+ on loading the ‘start campaign’. I suspect the game was pulled as they discovered some bugs. I reported one which wiped my save game, some others mention crashes and I’ve had a couple of those too. I’ve played a ton of it today (never tried the PC version) and its a truly amazing game, just one you might have to wait a few extra days for. Ringerill Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2012 315 170 43 #13 Ringerill, Oct 15, 2019 Not really sure because it showed up on the AppStore of my iPhone when I used the Search function for "Bad North". Still, I have been playing the iPhone version and didn't encounter any problems so far. The progression really reminds me of the FTL genre where you have an enemy wave tailing you and you must proceed with caution when you chose to venture from place to place. The only ressource you have is money that you get from defending villages from invaders but you can also find along your way new units and items, which will give you more skills. At first, I though that the limit of 3 different classes was sad but it turns out to be just fine because you already have to be mindful of many things and we have to remember that this is a rogue-lite and not a RTS Playing on Easy difficulty to discover the mechanics of the game for the moment but I think that after 1-2 hours in, you can understand pretty much everything needed to go play in Hard. Will it not play? Ringerill Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2012 315 170 43 #18 Ringerill, Oct 15, 2019 Yes, it seems that way. There is room for some real strategy of unit placement for instance where you can place your shielded units in front, pikemen behind them and archers on top of a hill. At first, I though that only 1 battle was available every turn but after having unlocked more units, I realised that you can protect more islands if you have units that did not participate yet in the turn. Also, as you can inspect the layout of the island and have an idea of the invading forces, you can optimise the type of units you will use. Some islands are really beneficial for archers while some are more focused on melee combat. And as the rewards only consists of Gold, it doesn't matter who you use because there is no such thing as XP here. So choosing the 4 units must be done with care. The fact that you can also use the boats of defeated enemies to escape is a nice touch and I guess it will become necessary in higher levels. I don't know if there is an end or if the difficulty just keeps increasing until you simply die but both possibilities are fine for me. I still have to discover all the innate passive bonuses of units and equipments but I can already feel like the more you play the game and the more you discover new mechanics and ideas on how to organise your troops using the terrain advantages. For example, the War Hammer item allows to slam the ground and eject units in front. This could be used to throw enemies in the water or make them fall off a cliff. However, it also touches allies so placement will be key! slewis7 likes this. dukat111 Well-Known Member Mar 23, 2010 514 94 28 #19 dukat111, Oct 15, 2019 The pre-order was $3.99, not sure if that's a discount.
