A man stands on a desolate Hebridean shore. As he takes his first step forward, he starts to speak: “Dear Esther...” and so begins a dreamlike, complex tale of love, loss and redemption. We’re invited to explore the windswept island, descending into an eerie, otherworldly story where reality fragments and falls apart. Generally recognised as kick-starting the walking simulator subgenre, Dear Esther features dynamic narration that means the story changes each time you return to the island. Since the original release, Dear Esther has sold over one million units and is seen as a benchmark in interactive and emotional storytelling. PC Gamer said it “provokes thought and feeling in a way few other games do.” It also won praise for its visuals and music, with The Daily Telegraph saying “Dear Esther's visuals are majestic”, and Jessica Curry’s soundtrack receiving awards and nominations from BAFTA among others.” Dear Esther includes subtitles in French, German, Spanish and Russian. We strongly recommend playing the game with sound on, it's great with headphones. If you need any help please contact us at [email protected]. Little interactivity, only one ending, and you can walk freely but only within the constraints of a pretty linear course, much the way many first-person shooter single player games are (like Doom III, say). Optional side-tangents are few and brief. (That also means there’s no lengthy backtracking and no frustration of “figuring out what to do next.”) Doesn’t even have a conventional story—but it does have a story. The writing is hit or miss but the voice acting and music are good and the narrative was satisfying in the end. I really liked it. Played it on Mac and wished I’d bought the bundle with soundtrack. Wear headphones, turn out the lights, take your time, and don’t expect it to be anything in particular. (Hope they bring it to VR too! I played it that way via hacks and it was amazing.) andsoitgoes Well-Known Member Jun 30, 2010 2,673 58 48 In a van, down by the river! #7 andsoitgoes, Oct 2, 2019 I know I’ll probably get flack for asking, but is there controller support? Gone home is still sitting collecting edust because there’s still no controller support and my rsi hates using the touch screen for even games as simple as a walking simulator. Maslan266 Well-Known Member Oct 14, 2017 397 56 28 #8 Maslan266, Jan 20, 2020 Played this a while back and I'm sorry to say, it's not worth $4.99. The game was way too short, which normally isn't that big of a deal for me, but the game itself was incredibly boring that at times I felt like I was forcing myself to stickwith it to the end. The graphics are good, and I especially adored the glowing caves and exploring them, but other than that I just felt like I was walking around an island and that's it. I didn't get the storyline at all, and the game was also too depressing, and I don't like depressing games. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
