Is this even an official release? Son of Anarchy likes this. Palanthian Well-Known Member Feb 19, 2016 142 2 18 #3 Palanthian, May 29, 2019 Portrait only? Obviously, taking a beloved franchise and making it casual is catnip for the anti-F2P crew. Keep in mind, though, that there are at least five hardcore, premium D&D RPGs in iOS. This is less “ruining a franchise” than opening it up to a different kind of player — think Dungeon vs 5R D&D. As to the game itself, there’s nothing generic about it. The mechanics are pretty fresh, combining elements of card combat with SRPG in a way that feels polished and tactical. The design borrows from classic D&D illustration, which to my eyes separate it from the cartoony Clash of Clans look. Better yet, the game features a DM of sorts who adds color to the action — the voice acting is quite good. At this point, I can’t tell how greedy the F2P mechanics are. I’ve put about an hour into it and I’m not even tempted to spend any money. I lost a couple of fights, but I was able to change tactics and squeak out a victory. It’s always possible that I’ll hit a wall later on, of course. In any event, I’m not saying that this is a must play, but I think it’s worth checking out. Stronsay likes this. The reason I usually pass on portrait games is because I primarily play on my iPad, and I find them incredibly awkward, but I'll try it on my phone first and see how it plays. I'm an old school D&D gamer, hence my avatar (Pool of Radiance, where it all began). stubbieoz likes this. ramzarules Well-Known Member Sep 13, 2014 2,112 128 63 Greece #6 ramzarules, May 29, 2019 as a long time d&d player, i will check it out also. from a 10 min gameplay video, i will go in with zero expectations... and hoping to be pleasantly surprised. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,714 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #7 squarezero, May 29, 2019 First edition player here. Just picked up the 5th edition books to teach my son. To be clear, this is a casual take on the game. It didn’t strike me as just a cash grab, though. Hope you get something out of it. Palanthian Well-Known Member Feb 19, 2016 142 2 18 #8 Palanthian, May 29, 2019 I gave this a reasonable shot. I like the game, but it really is a cash grab. Play for over an hour and you’ll run out of gold. You earn this at a snail’s pace. Reading their forums, this doesn’t improve that much by going VIP, and buying gold is VERY expensive. Not viable for me. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,714 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #9 squarezero, May 30, 2019 That’s fair enough. I’ve been able to get more gold doing the challenge events, so this hasn’t been an issue for me. I like the game enough that I may spend $10 (my limit on F2P games) on 10,000 gold and 450 gems — that’s what I did on ES: Blades and I’ve been playing it non-stop since early access started. I’m not against spending some money on these games. karl New Member Patreon Bronze Jun 11, 2013 2 0 1 #10 karl, May 30, 2019 A few android reviews at googeplay say you hit a paywall at level 5 gmattergames Well-Known Member Mar 1, 2013 607 42 28 #11 gmattergames, May 31, 2019 Paywall definitely emerges at 5 as the cost upgrades can take hours to earn. Even if your willing to pay, the true-grind is the exponentially increasing level-up requirement as exp is not a currency you can buy. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
