Hi everyone, I wanted to share with you Line-3, an iOS-exclusive game that we have released just recently. It is a futuristic take on the traditional Native American strategy game Picaria. Picaria might be one of the lesser-known board games but it certainly deserves some attention, as it it offers a good amount of tactical depth despite its very simple rules - a lot more than the popular Tic Tac Toe. This makes it a great fit for a casual, yet surprisingly challenging mobile game. Line-3 takes Picaria's mechanics and packs them into an exciting high-score based game with varying AI difficulty levels, as indicated by different color schemes. What makes Line-3 very special though is its visual presentation. The app uses realtime ray tracing to achieve beautiful global illumination from randomly generated lighting setups. Ray tracing is a very demanding rendering technique which is often used in major film productions and it enables us to create some stunningly soft and smooth lighting and shadowing effects. The global illumination required a considerable amount of thorough optimization to make it feasible for iOS devices, and to our best knowledge, Line-3 is the first game to make use of ray tracing on a mobile device. We decided to make Line-3 a very affordable premium app to keep it free of any ads that would distract from its beautiful visuals. We may give out a few promo keys it there is interest and in any case, I would be more than happy to receive your feedback! This gameplay is so simple but so clever. It’s like an adult’s tic-tac-toe with an added twist that makes it strategic and fun (unlike tic-tac-toe). Visually, it’s beautiful. My only complaints are that there’re no options that I can see nor is there any sort of menu. Hopefully this’ll be updated in the future. I’d gladly pay for upgrades to this gem. Regarding the UI, there is a basic options menu but it might be hidden a bit too well - when you touch the top of the screen, it will show up. I will see how this can be made clearer for upcoming versions. For everyone else interested, we are currently offering the full version of the game for free (also no ads) for a limited time. Feedback is always very welcome! adin Well-Known Member Nov 24, 2008 170 4 18 New Mexico #4 adin, May 9, 2019 I know this may sound weird, but I'd love to have some way to interact with with background (move objects, change light color, change light intensity, tune various rendering options on/off) ...maybe as a secret tinker mode? rza422 Active Member Apr 22, 2014 42 5 8 #5 rza422, May 9, 2019 Lovely little game! Looks really nice, plays simply and makes sense. Couple of things, some intro to the rules might be nice. I understand the aesthetic but two lines of dialogue might help the starting process. Options to fiddle with the background (colours/intensity/position/etc) would be great. Maybe early through play? Also, I may not have played enough but I don’t get the numbers that change as you win and lose! Probably me being a pudding.... great work altogether though, thanks! adin likes this. The color schemes indicate the current AI difficulty, with the teal/orange scheme being the simplest, blue/purple the medium and red/green being the hardest difficulty levels. As you presume, I'm trying to keep all visual distraction to a minimum but a short introduction on startup is probably a good idea. You always play over 15 rounds (the second number). Every round you win increases your score, depending on the current AI difficulty (1 point for easy, 3 for medium, 5 for hard). When you win two rounds in a row, the difficulty level goes up, when you lose three in a row, the difficulty goes down, as indicated by the color schemes. rza422 Active Member Apr 22, 2014 42 5 8 #7 rza422, May 13, 2019 Thanks so much for the comprehensive answer, it’s always nice to hear back from a developer! Don’t know if would have worked that out but maybe I’m not paying enough attention Still playing, great one to pop on for the bus queue! (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
