You can play as King or Assassins (Assassins are fun). The game is fairly simple: The goal is to get the King to the entrance gate alive, by maneuvering knights to protect him. Conversely, the Assassins try to kill the King on the way. Knights and assassins have different powers. But not so many that it gets confusing. It's sort of like a chess game. However it does take time to plot your moves, etc. I will have more time this weekend to explore this. The screen seems small at first, but can be enlarged so you can see the players better, and also the camera moves at different angles. So, I replayed the tutorial and things became a little more clear. You can play as King or Assassins (Assassins are fun).
