Imagine the puzzles in Monument Valley that can be rotated, coupled with an ultra stylish cyberpunk brick breaker and a dash of shmup. Ridiculous amount of polish, amazing visuals. No IAP. That’s exactly how I was before I bought it, very confused even after looking at video, which is why I made an impulse buy here—I needed to see it for myself. My impressions are...mixed. You have the option to rotate the structures by swiping, which is somewhat cumbersome. Not the actual swipe itself, but tracking all the different angles and positions that the structure can have quickly becomes a tedious process. Hmmm... Let me put it another way... Take the “awkwardness” and “disorientation” of those levels in Monument Valley which can be manually flipped and spun around, then couple that feeling with the gameplay of a brick breaker. You are basically doing the same thing here, spinning around a giant puzzle, deconstructing it with brick breaking and the occasional shooting. The issue here is that the destruction of the actual puzzle is not satisfying. There is too much going on between moving the puzzle to an appropriate position and trying to keep focus on where you want to attack. Also, I am very tired of seeing game after game borrow from Monument Valley’s art style, which is not helping any bias I may have. This game is beautiful, but it’s not original. That being said, this is NOT a bad game. In fact, most people will probably like it. It will have to grow on me though to give a more optimistic opinion. There are also power-ups available I’ve yet to unlock that could potentially alter the game enough to change my outlook. EDIT: A couple other points... The goal is to get to the center, or the core, of each structure, whereupon you shoot and/or bounce into this piece to win the level. All other blocks are simply there to obstruct your progress. To add to the borrowing, certain blocks will have circles, or dots, on them, which is basically the same concept as the buttons that change the shape of the puzzles in Monument Valley. It’s just another aspect to the core gameplay that lacks authenticity. This game is literally the best hybrid MV/brick breaker that’s ever been invented nkarafo Well-Known Member Mar 2, 2011 864 14 18 #8 nkarafo, Mar 27, 2018 Any impressions??? Troid Well-Known Member Mar 20, 2018 48 12 8 #9 Troid, Mar 27, 2018 Some positives... Just had a RIDICULOUS boss fight. Very cool. The game... It has its own style outside of the MV borrowing. For example, its the puzzles/formations that feel unauthentic, but everything else about the game is outstanding. Troid Well-Known Member Mar 20, 2018 48 12 8 #14 Troid, Mar 27, 2018 Last edited: Mar 28, 2018 These boss fights are really something to see, completely different than the regular, brick breaking levels of the game. Definitely enjoying myself much more in this realm. More focused and rewarding, without the concern of rotating a three dimensional structure. Also, to put my impressions from last night into better context, it would make more sense to leave the issue of borrowing from Monument Valley off the table for the time being and instead add clarity to when I mentioned feeling unsatisfied. Specifically, this is due to a vagueness of the player not knowing exactly what to do, in combination with the complexity in deconstructing the puzzle. In other words, the player is left to trial and error, usually by spinning the puzzle around and around (which can be confusing in itself), trying to remember which power/up and which button does what, in order to complete a complex task of destroying the blocks to get to the center. Moreover, there aren’t enough visual/audio cues that tell the player what is happening after they perform an action. For example, I’ve shot the core on multiple occasions with multiple weapons, but I’m never quite sure if I’m doing damage, at least not until the level abruptly ends and I’ve won. So, in general, there is too much to take into account without the player having a better idea of what’s going on. There is a good game here as well, but it’s shrouded in a disconnect between player and puzzle. Hope that makes more sense. The antmosphere(sound and art) is great, and the breakout-esque gameplay is a nice fresh take on it. (Sort of free formed, without any boundaries, the ball is launched and bounces around freely without returning to a launcher or paddle and the "bricks" have a 3D layout that you can move and manipulate) However I'm not great at it and if anyone had any tips or advice for when it gets passed the early stages I'd appreciate it nyanpass Well-Known Member Dec 30, 2017 3,374 1,043 113 #17 nyanpass, Mar 28, 2018 Have you checked this video?
