Game is pretty good so far, despite some UI issues (e.g. I miss next/previous unit buttons) . Already sent the devs an email with improvement suggestions, waiting for their reaction. The only thing I don't like so far is that you can get a lot of premium units, and their pricetags add up pretty fast. I'm rather reluctant to spend any money on a game where I don't know / can't judge if I'll run into a paywall at some point. The double currency with Gold and Gems doesn't seem to be a problem, as you can trade Gold for Gems (which you need to upgrade your buildings and Hero) . MacrosTheBlack Well-Known Member May 23, 2009 104 2 18 Illinois #4 MacrosTheBlack, Jan 3, 2018 Game looks really nice, but after being spoiled with Civ VI, free to play like this is a big nope. Looks like the f2p part is done really well, and no need to worry about it. I spent a bit to get a unique unit (see next post) and the 5 extra gems that come with your first purchase. Gems are plentiful, and also nothing to be concerned about: You get one for each completed mission, can purchase them for Gold (very doable, got several already), and later can play extreme difficulty skirmishes to get even more. As I couldn't warm up to Civ6 at all, I'd very much prefer to spend the 30 bucks I'd have had to drop on a full Civ unlock here. Not that I will, even unlocking everything shouldn't be more than 15€, I think. And it doesn't look as if you need the "premium"/unique units, your regular ones should do just fine. You are NOT dependent on what you recruited. However, selectively bringing in recruited units (looking at you, Mages. Go freeze! ) can help a lot. 2) Early on, the game wants you to either buy 2 new buildings, or upgrade existing ones. And to recruit 4 units to unlock Skirmish mode. Recommendation: Unlock the Alchemist Guild, the Mage Guild and the Mage Tower: Alchemist lets you buy Potions (the "move further" one is great and not too expensive, plus you won't need it every stage). Mage Guild gives you Scrolls (I recommend the first protection scroll for when things get hairy); and, even more important, allows to build the Mage Tower and recruit Mages. To meet the 4 unit requirement, just recruit Militia as they are the cheapest. Level 1 is enough for all buildings so far, no need to upgrade further yet. 3) Get one Mage, 2 are optional. They can freeze enemy units at 5 range, very nice addition to your army. 4) Next, save all your Gold and Gems. Yeah, this sounds like typical f2p advise, but I am going for something different here: 5) Upgrading your Hero, the Paladin: He's your most important unit, and his upgrades are extremely valuable even in story missions. Level him up once, then add Regeneration 1. If he takes a beating, level him up to 4 (maxlevel 5 costs 2 gems, can wait a bit). Then, before you do anything else, levelup his "Extra Gold" ability to 5. I didn't do that (experimented around with unit buildings instead), and really regret it already. UPDATE: Extragold and Regen lvl4 & 5 cost 2 Gems each. Troop Management costs 1 Gem/level for 3 total. 6) Optionally, upgrade Militia a bit. On some stages, they make great cannonfodder and can take out an enemy unit or two right when they step off the Teleporter after you brought them in at the right time. 7) Upgrade your Teleporter at least once. 8) As you won't need much Gold yet, spend everything you have on buying more gems and upgrading your Paladin further: Once you got him to level 5 and have his extragold skill maxed, I'd invest in maxing Regen. After that, it's up to you. I'd go with at least one level of "Increased Magic Range" first, and then at least one level of "extra magic use per turn" (you can use one scroll/potion per turn by default). 9) Save your Scrolls and Potions. On the default Normal difficulty, you should almost never need to burn some. I made a huge mistake by experimenting around with harder difficulties (especially Skirmishes) and burning through my Scroll/Potion rewards in the process. 10) If you want to spend some money on the IAP (to support the devs or whatever), I HIGHLY recommend getting the Warboar (bottom of the list). That beastie rocks He can roll up an enemy flank all on his own. Plus, your first purchase gives you 5 extra gems, and it's only a buck for the Boar. If you want to spend more, just pick whatever you like. The Templar Pack sounds like a great deal (lvl5 units of all types) for 4.50€, as does the Frost Ballista for 2.50 - freezes enemies at 8 range, very nice; should complement the Boar really well. 11) If you have no problem with watching ads, I recommend doing so as well at least now and then: You get some nice rewards for them, and they are short, usually ~30 seconds. And, it's faster than playing a Skirmish stage 12) After the above-listed upgrades, I'd go with getting the Militia to max-level 5. And upgrade the Alchemist, Mage Tower and Guild to level 2 each. Mage Tower maybe to 3 or even 5 before doing anything else. More to come later when I'm further in. Oh, one more thing: Hard and Extreme difficulty are called that for a reason in this game. If you don't believe me, give it a try and see for yourself Now that we got that out of the way and you had your butt handed to you on a platter, trust me when I say to stay away from the higher difficulties early on, ok? cyllwynn Well-Known Member Jul 3, 2011 65 2 8 #7 cyllwynn, Jan 3, 2018 Thats blasphemy. Definitely not one of my more exhaustive works @cyllwynn re WHQ2: By now it's perfectly playable, there are some small bugs (mostly UI) left, and some not so small balance issues. But you can play just fine, no more crashes or severe bugs in quite some time. I went through 3 more playthroughs in the last 4 weeks or so, one of them still ongoing, and quite enjoyed them despite the game being not difficult enough for my tastes: even when I'm in relax mode and don't want to do the mental heavy lifting e.g. DR2 on highest difficulty required, I still find it too easy. This here, Hex Commander, so far feels just right on Normal difficulty: I need to think about what I am doing and plan, but it's relaxing; nowhere near the hard mental work and resulting stress like e.g. DR2.
