The description says 1000s of levels - Is this an endless game where everyone will get the same set of levels? daniel.obyrne Member May 8, 2017 5 0 0 Game Developer Dublin, Ireland http://www.finalgamestudio.com/ #5 daniel.obyrne, May 9, 2017 The game is endless, but everyone only has the same set of levels up until around world 20 ( the first ~100 puzzles ). Those first puzzles needed to be hand made ( or in some cases just hand tailored based on what my generator produced ) to get the effect I wanted and have interesting patterns hidden in them. It also helped me tune the opening worlds difficulty curve. Once the puzzles get large enough though, the generator I designed was able to create interesting enough variation and patterns that I could leave the rest up to it - as a player, you shouldn't really be able to notice exactly where the hand made levels end and the generated ones begin. So From world 20 on, all players should be seeing unique puzzles and patterns (though the difficulty curve will remain pretty steady, so one players world 30 puzzles should be about as challenging as any other world 30 for example ) Stronsay Well-Known Member Aug 6, 2015 987 230 43 #6 Stronsay, May 10, 2017 That's interesting as I was wondering how anyone could program thousands of levels! I'm liking the way the difficulty progression works, in that there are some straightforward levels among the brain burners. Good to have some respite after a difficult challenge. I'm in world 11 and so far can solve the levels which have some fixed spinners present as they give clues to the pattern. Levels without spinners are stinkers though, as there are so many possible arrangements. Have had to use up some hints on those, but I'm getting to learn the logic behind the patterns. The variation in shading certainly helps to highlight incorrect placement. Looking forward to seeing what the auto-designer can do. daniel.obyrne Member May 8, 2017 5 0 0 Game Developer Dublin, Ireland http://www.finalgamestudio.com/ #7 daniel.obyrne, May 10, 2017 Yeah, designing thousands of levels by hand would have taken a bit too long First thing I did was make a level editor, then once I had a few levels I liked, I designed a generator that could come up with nice levels on its own based on some basic rules( for example, symmetrically shaped levels are usually more visually appealing ) Having spinners, or fixed sides, definitely help a lot - I noticed a few of my play-testers got into the habit of using a single hint sometimes if there weren't any fixed tiles already on the level - they could usually spiral out a solution from there. If you are interested in seeing how tough it could eventually get, I have a short video of a REALLY hard late game level (you would need to be well past world 100 before the generator would be this cruel, don't worry ) Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel PS. No new features yet, in case you were wondering, but it fixes a small bug that made it possible to finish some of the world levels before they had been completely revealed, which meant you could skip a few puzzles. Embarrassingly, the bug was discovered by one of the reviewers I had sent out early promo codes to... neither of my two fuzzy interns/testers managed to find it (http://finalgamestudio.com/about.html) shfrost Well-Known Member Apr 9, 2010 432 10 18 Artist Wooded area #9 shfrost, May 11, 2017 Very nice! Great sound and visuals. I've only just started but I find this game to be a very relaxing, and quite beautiful, puzzler. Just what I need after too much time with shmups, rpgs, racing, whatever. And again, love the sound effects and ambient background music. Nice job! (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
