I've currently got Faeria and The Elder Scrolls Legends on my iPad and so far Eternal is winning it for me. There is in game currency, gold and premium gems, none of which I've gained yet but I'm only through stage 1 of the 4 part solo campaign. All available in the obligatory store along with packs but I don't have prices as none are showing yet. All in all, pretty much seems to have taken all the best/usual bits of CCG's and bundled them in to this game. Worth a punt, oh, and you get 3 free packs for registering an account. These are the guys currently developing Elder Scrolls Legends alongside Eternal. For TESL fans, that alone warrants a closer look at Eternal. Where TESL is an evolution of the Hearthstone formula (one that makes ALL the difference), Eternal is said to hew closer to the Magic tradition of multi-colored mana, mana cards and assigned blockers instead of targeted attacks. In practice, Eternal still plays much like HS, and still takes more cues from Blizzard than Wizards in CCG design. But just like Dire Wolf has created a very evolved, partly original, deeply strategic and wholly enjoyable beast in Legends, Eternal slids comfortably into a design space only partly occupied. Compared to Legends' lanes, runes and more sophisticated card mechanics, though, it's probably less original, even if the Magic-derived mechanics might make it seem more novel to the HS-trained eye. Personally, I appreciate Eternal's heightened interactivity during off turns (assigning blockers, responding with spells), and a few small mechanical touches that gives the game greater width and depth of strategy. Bringing back land (mana) cards from the 90s design space graveyard, and without any of the small concessions of nonbasic lands, does not endear the game to me at all, though. I like it even less than HS' and TESL's simplified one mana per turn schtick. There are many reasons I wish Mojang's Scrolls would have survived (and been ported to iOS from the outset), but among the first is to set a precedent for discarding or otherwise using regular cards in hand for mana. (The true role models for this mechanic would be the Call of Cthulhu LCG and the L5R CCG, games that made mana curves a strategic choice rather than an automated OR randomized process.) And the GUI, card frame and play mat art style... I'm racking my brain to work out what subset that's being pandered to here. Wow fundamentalists? People who like their fantasy cartoonish and smoothed out until no figurative or literal edges remain? TESL' "serious, harder" art style might have been a bit polarizing (I belong to the unabashed fanboy camp). But enjoy-or-despise, it is characteristic and original (among digital CCGs). The card art is often gorgeous. But also brings the GUI to mind, and plunge deeper into that abyss and you'll find Azeroth's over-armoured, over-coloured and under-subtle hordes slithering around at the bottom. Eternal offers more stylish characterizations, a small comfort, but I'm torn between writing it off as a total derivative or wanting to see hundreds of comic books made in its image. Much like TESL, Eternal is also considerably more generous than most of its ilk. Keeping all the cards drafted in arena is just total sacriledge to the accepted CCG f2p model. I love it. Keep blowing up those foundations of western society, brave nihilists! It likely pushes Eternal past TESL in ease of freemium access to new content, and grinding demands to be competitive. Single player content seems uncommonly plentiful for a CCG, but there doesn't seem to be anything as brilliant or enduring as TESL's single player arena. EDIT: Actually, Eternal's Gauntlet mode might be just the thing, possibly just as fun, rewarding, practical and relaxing (face is where its at in competitive CCGs, but the exciting tension of player versus player is not always desireable) as TESL's solo arena. Takeaway? Duelyst beta this week, Faeria soft launch in swing, TESL full tablet release just below the horizon and mobile forthcoming... and now another high quality CCG in our pockets. Eternal might be the least original of the four Horsemen of the (not really forthcoming) Hearthstone Apocalypse, but it is nonetheless good, and might establish a new baseline for unholy HS-Magic hybrids. I hold it up as yet another data point in proof of Chair's theorem... Shortdog5150 Well-Known Member Jun 18, 2015 48 7 8 Male #8 Shortdog5150, Jul 17, 2017 This is out now!
