    so :
    i got a problem
i want to upgrade my ipod to 3.1.3.
    but my question is
does the installation of the OS deletes everything and put in then after the OS is upgraded back on the device or does it just change the OS
because my itunes crashed and now all songs are 3* there.
so i cant press sync because all my current songs and charts would be gone

    It just changes the OS.

Caveat would be that if you have iTunes set to sync music/etc and don't have those on the system you use iTunes to upgrade with, you could lose that information.

Here's the info you need if you're syncing your device with multiple computers:

Be sure to make a backup (and a copy of the backup) beforehand.

My iPod Touch went into a 3-hour reboot-apple logo-reboot loop after I upgraded, but seems OK right now.
