Inspired by the television series Twin Peaks, Shady Brook places players in the role of author Jake Torrent in his search of a small town's twisted secrets. ABOUT: Shady Brook puts a unique spin on classic interactive fiction, combining classic room-based explorative text game mechanics with a stylish graphical interface. It plays like an interactive novel. You make a series of choices that determine what happens next in the story. But unlike in traditional gamebooks and visual novels, Shady Brook also features more advanced adventure-based game mechanics, including locations to explore, items to interact with, characters to meet, and puzzles to solve. STORY: Author Jake Torrent, alongside his blind father Wayne, moves to the small, peaceful country town of Shady Brook. At first, everything seems idyllic. His neighbor, Tim, is always willing to lend a hand, and the Ekan family invites him to dinner. But soon, Jake learns that his home's previous occupant committed suicide, and mysterious things begin to occur. When another resident also commits suicide, Jake starts to suspect foul play. Could this town take part in a conspiracy to cover up a murder? As Jake investigates, he gets more than he bargained for: a town secret so terrifying that there is no turning back... FEATURES: - EXPLORE a small country town - INTERACT with nearly two dozen characters - CHOOSE your path--your actions alter the course of the story - PICK UP, COMBINE, and USE a multitude of inventory items - SOLVE a variety of challenging and unique puzzles - DISCOVER the town's terrifying secrets in a truly dark and mature storyline - ENJOY over 250 pieces of original artwork and an hour-long soundtrack - UNLOCK 33 achievements to view a special post-game bonus scene - EXPERIENCE 8+ hours of content--the equivalent length of a novel! CRITICAL PRAISE: Shady Brook is based on the 2005 adventure game of the same name. The game's storyline was critically-acclaimed. I only got 3% into the story so far, so it must be a pretty decent length. Enjoying the writing, so I'll likely stick with it. Just got momentarily stuck so I need to figure out what I missed. It's pretty bad. But the kind of bad that makes me interested in playing anything this dev puts out just because of how ridiculous it was. Lots of completely nonsensical things, bizarre character models, and incredibly obvious twists. So maybe it's worth checking out for you? I will warn that it glosses over an instance of rape in a really weird way at one point, though. I also hit a couple bugs- most significantly a sudden jarring jump back to a very early scene that has you picking the difficulty/options (that thankfully went back to normal right after; my listed objective was the old one until I did something, but at least I didn't lose all that progress) and once opening the app after I stopped playing skipped the rest of the scene I was in. But nothing major, really. Dankrio Well-Known Member Patreon Silver Jun 3, 2014 1,740 13 38 #8 Dankrio, Aug 7, 2016 That letf me with mixed feelings. I was really put off by the character models (dear God, what is that?!?) but was willing to ignore it for a good experience and to enjoy a cool story. Now I don't know what to think anymore. ludka33 Well-Known Member Jan 12, 2013 217 0 16 #10 ludka33, Aug 8, 2016 You did finish it, though? That should say something, shouldn't it? I believe "This War of Mine" was the last ios title I actually finished. Reminds me of the early novels of Stephen King; set in a small isolated town - nothing seems quite right and all the locals appear to have something to hide. Why was the house so cheap to buy? And why is one of the bedroom doors locked? Who is the solitary figure on a nearby hill watching over the town? The writing is good with well detailed characters who each have their own back story, and dialogue flows well. The art is a bit average but at least it helps with navigation to have every location illustrated. Not quite so good is the gameplay/puzzles which involve an awful lot of walking about and back-tracking, rather like the old Infocom adventures. Some solutions are logical and others had me stuck for a while, and progress was just a matter of luck in speaking to the right person or combining objects. Anyway, I've got this far so will attempt to finish it. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
