Some of the mechanics are smart, the UI and interactions are smooth and convenient, the game is very pretty, and there are plenty of yet another carrot progression hooks. But the game never seems to leave the small-scale and highly casual (further compounded by the fact that leveled stats and other progression mechanisms have a greater impact on the outcome of battles than tactical skill). You jump into a fight, tap a few times, perhaps pull off a smart maneuver that avoides a little damage and positions you slightly better than your opponent, your car fires away by itself, and then it is over in a matter of <60 seconds. Minutes, if yer lucky. There is simply not time for any in-depth tactics, to enjoy the excellent engine and gameplay framework. It is a very nice framework for a smart and innovative TBS. But Darkwind Online it isn't, combat-wise or otherwise... HelperMonkey Well-Known Member Dec 16, 2009 632 8 18 Iowa #4 HelperMonkey, Jul 6, 2016 I have a similar impression right now. There was clearly a lot of work put into this. Everything is well-polished. But compared to the pages of menus and heaps of stats, gadgets, upgrades, etc. (including timers and currencies) there is just not a lot of gameplay. It's a shame, because it feels like a pretty fresh idea as far as car combat goes. I very rarely play anything F2P these days. Maybe others will enjoy all the customization options with the brief, fairly casual gameplay segments that are at least an interesting change up, and won't be bothered by the standard F2P trappings. I just don't see myself putting a lot of time into it. It's definitely worth checking out, though. It's a cool idea, I just prefer deeper gameplay. forsakenxe Well-Known Member Oct 23, 2014 709 0 16 #5 forsakenxe, Jul 7, 2016 Yup my first impressions are similar to yours, seems like a polished games but the actual gameplay portions of the game are way too short and there is a lot of depth missing. Only comment I have so far is that the button to execute your turn is a tad small, and I'm on a 6 Plus. Being turn-based this isn't a big deal though. mrpacogp Active Member Jul 7, 2016 30 0 6 Spain #8 mrpacogp, Jul 7, 2016 wow, looks awesome. Good work! Gunjin Games Member Jun 10, 2016 10 0 0 UK #9 Gunjin Games, Jul 7, 2016 Hi all, Thanks for the comments and feedback so far. We're a very small dev team that genuinely welcomes any suggestions, (constructive) criticism as well as praise! To address the questions about the combat gameplay duration: the early levels deliberately comprise short and relatively straight-forward battles our testing showed that giving new players too great a challenge early on put them off permanently, especially those that werent used to the TBS genre. However as you level up, these start to get more difficult and strategic with multiple enemies and a broadening array of weapons, armour, gadgets, cars and a large number of specialisations (kits and perks accessible via the Trader, Auto Warriors crafting system). Weve tried to balance the more powerful weapons too with counter-measures such as flares for rockets, mine detectors for mines, fire extinguishers and fireproof armour for flamethrowers and walls of fire. Needless to say these are steadily unlocked as you play the game. Thanks again for playing the game! Keep 'em coming. We're also really enjoying the replay videos players have been sharing. Miya-Gee New Member Jul 9, 2016 3 0 0 #10 Miya-Gee, Jul 9, 2016 I disagree. I think the short duration fights are spot on. It's a mobile game rather than PC game after all - even if it does borrow alot from PC gaming so not sure the comparison with a PC game like darkwind is very fair. I have got quite far in it and the gameplay gets much more complex/deep as the devs said. Aerioch Member May 17, 2010 5 0 0 #11 Aerioch, Jul 17, 2016 Aside from being constantly murdered in PvP, I think this is a pretty enjoyable game. I've spent some money on the IAP (which I don't think is too onerous). I think the only complaint I have is the inventory system. Why do equipped items on your car take up inventory space? It's a bit irritating and seems too heavily influenced by spending increasing amounts of gold to play the game. On a side note, I purchased an ultimate mystery box and it just had cash in it. Really didn't inspire me to buy any further boxes. vonknut Well-Known Member Dec 5, 2013 220 3 18 #12 vonknut, Jul 25, 2016 Last edited: Jul 25, 2016 The tactics geets a lot deeper, when you start having more weapons to choose from and start upgrading weapons+armor+cars, in different ways (you can upgrade armor and weapons with different stat bonusses - and they are mutually exclusive, so you have to choose where to focus). Also with armor that can get destroyed locally (front, bach, left, right) and different weapons (with different upgrades) the combat starts to get complex. Do you want to face the enemy with you front, where your heavy machinegun is but where your armor is depleted OR run away and let the enemy hit your non-depleted back armor and drop mines (because you back facing weapon is out of ammo). And with e.g. 3 enemies at once, in some levels, you really have to play 'smart' and sometimes also go back and change gear on your car, to beat the level. You can also craft 'perks' and stuff, that can be equipped on card and weapons for extra effect. And then there are the different cars... Im level 10 and enjoying it as f2p player, its not greedy or too intrusive. So i can really recommend it. Taking a pause from clash-royal, to play this Edit: Buying inventory space is not really an issue. Costs 1 gold per space, you need maybe 50 max. In sitting on 700 gold, without spendibg a dime so far Im more short on cash - the non-premium curency NaughtHere Well-Known Member Nov 14, 2010 87 0 0 #13 NaughtHere, Nov 5, 2016 Can I just buy a premium version of this without all the iap and timers? There is a really promising core, but the Freemium bs makes it a slog. I can't even retry a level with full health, without spending currency. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
