With how technology has advanced and with what both consoles and mobile can do these days, I'll admit that it's becoming harder and harder for me to actually be impressed by new games...but let me tell you something (and both Jared Nelson and the developers themselves can attest to the following): Upon booting up Lost Socks for the first time, I looked down at my phone for about 5 minutes, with my hand literally on my mouth, looking like I had just received news that my (non-existent) dog had died. A great man once told me "it's like playing a disney movie lol" in a private discussion and I simply couldn't put it any better. What am I on about? Well...I'll get to that in a minute. For starters, let's just establish what Lost Socks is. Is there such thing as a bullet hell auto-running platformer? Because that's the best way I can describe the game. I know the bunch of you who are just reading this and haven't been following the Lost Socks articles on the TA front-page and upcoming forum thread are thinking "THIS IS AN AUTO-RUNNER?!?!? HELL NAW!!!", but believe me...it wouldn't work any other way. Take the auto-running iOS Rayman titles, sprinkle them with Earthworm Jim charm and quirkiness to the moon and back and then send a massive army of evil Nibbles (those are the bad guys) at the protagonist and watch him crumble (or whatever it is socks do) in fear as he tries to defeat them and make his way (by dashing and floating, naturally!) across an endless array of superbly designed platforms to reach a washing machine. That's the gist of Lost Socks. Simple, right? Well, that's only if you don't take into consideration that you actually need to find and save other socks in each level to be able to progress in the game. Not only that, but you're looking at a sea of replayability and content as the game offers you three massive worlds, endless side-objectives that'll help you rack up coins and even a score to beat in each level to obtain a golden crown. See, the awesome thing is that the game allows you to venture on different paths in each level in order to either save your brothers (socks...we've established that, right?) or get a golden crown and thus invites repeated plays of each level. The crazy thing is that you'd think with so much replayability and content, the game would be easy. Ha! Normally when I have the chance to play a pre-release copy of a game, I try to finish it off before even writing a word...but with Lost Socks? I'd be lying if I said I even finished off the first world. At first I blamed that on the fact that I was trying to get every achievable thing in every level before moving on, but since I wanted to get this write-up done before the game came out, I just started blazing through leve--no, not really...I came to what could be considered a stand-still since HOLY SHIT THIS GAME IS SO HARDCORE AND IS KICKING MY ASS LEFT AND RIGHT!!! Yes. The game's hard. That's the bullet hell aspect I mentioned above. You're NOT being constantly shot at, make no mistake. It's just that there are SO many enemies attacking you (and even though you just move right, you're being attacked from all directions) that it feels like...a SOMETHING hell! That's why I said that the game wouldn't work with directional buttons...there's just something being thrown at you constantly and it would just be overwhelming to have to balance the hardcore nature of the game with movement. Oh, another thing? I couldn't tell you if the game has bosses (did some shameless fact checking after writing this and there are indeed bosses) since I haven't reached far enough to tell, but I can tell you that the coins (mentioned above) you obtain are used to increase the power of your power-ups, buy new weapons (OH MY EARTHWORM JIM-INESS OF THESE WEAPONS!) and unlock perks that'll help you out in the long run (such as making enemies cough up extra hearts for you). Mind you, there are absolutely no IAPs here, so you'll need to earn those coins, just like the good old days. There's just so much I could write about (and I'm sure I've missed a ton of what I intended to mention), but you'll probably finish downloading the game before finishing reading this write-up, so I'm just gonna speed on through. As far as Game Center goes, unfortunately I've been bitten by the Game Center bug so I don't know what the game offers in that regard, but enough blabbering...let's get to the juicy bits! You know what I was talking about earlier? How impressive the game is? Yeah, it's bad enough NERF GAME have absolutely nailed down the gameplay aspect of the game, offering you endless replayibility, flawless controls, a premium experience and all...you will simply not believe your eyes when you see how down-right GORGEOUS Lost Socks is! I'm talking about an untouchable level of near perfection. Seriously, along with the lush environments are animations that are simply mind-blowing. The game moves like a cartoon, with details you hardly see in games. Things from platforms in the background crumbling away, butterflies fluttering, sunlight shining upon you, enemies blowing up in excruciating detail, and...you? A sock? How in the world does a ****ing sock have so much charm? The little guy is so reminiscent of Earthworm Jim and even has a hilarious inflating head too. I think the best comparison here would be to Dust: An Elysian Tail. Yes, I'm dead serious. This is artwork and animation at its finest and while Lost Socks is even more cartoony than Dust, it's no less impressive and probably makes your favorite game (choose one!) look like complete garbage. It's THAT good! Another highlight of the game is the level of detail put into your upgradable weaponry and just how flawlessly they're animated. The sound design is also flat-out incredible, with every weapon sounding loud, punchy and varied and to top it off you've got an infectious soundtrack and one hell of an enthusiastic announcer egging you on. Again, there's just sooooooooo much I could talk about, but you'd be best off experiencing it for yourself. Hopefully your $5 and seven hundred something MBs (installed) have already gone helping these Lost Socks out, but I highly advise you to check out the upcoming thread as it's positively beaming with (far more) detailed impressions (than my own) and gameplay tips by both some of the lucky dudes who have gotten to check this out and by the incredible, obviously passionate set of developers who have poured their hearts, souls and the last 4 years of their lives into a game that will undoubtedly go down as one of the best games to ever grace mobile and constantly remind you that no matter what your favorite game is...this is better. If Lost Socks doesn't end up in the running for game of the year at the end of 2016, I will...I'll...uhhh...I'll do something. Okay?
