RPG heaven this week! I'm also curious about impressions for ys2. I heard mixed reviews on ys1 and how the game play was hard to get into for some people as it was a bit too unique. And I just played Adventures of Mana and I wasn't too thrilled (mainly because it was just item inventory / map finding / little involved combat) though the updated visuals were gorgeous. This have a deeper combat with less "find everything yourself"? Edit: http://www.destructoid.com/review-ys-i-ii-chronicles-200037.phtml This really old review scares me too much. A lot of people refute the reviewer in the comments but many people say the game hasn't aged well and wouldn't recommend it to new people unless they're fans of the game itself. I hope that's completely off base. They're basically hardcore action games in a classic style, with some minor RPG elements sown in. Ys 2 is like a pre-bullet hell era shoot-em-up more than anything else. If DotEmu ever brings Oath In Felghana to iOS, you would probably like that one. To those asking, you should absolutely play Ys 1 before playing this. They're designed to be played as one game, and more often than not come packed together. The fundamentals you learn in Ys 1 are vital to surviving Ys 2. The first game isn't that long and it has a very zippy pace, so please give it a go. L.Lawliet Well-Known Member Jun 28, 2011 6,405 420 83 #13 L.Lawliet, Feb 10, 2016 Hey Shaun thanks for the reply! I do like bullet hell games which I heard Ys is kind of similar to but I'm not sure how far that comparison goes. Obviously Mana isn't close to a bullet hell as combat is a lot more subdued. But thank you for your thoughts. I'll give it some more time and see if I just buy it for the sake of giving it a try. I do love the character art and the story seems fun. I'll also keep a look out for Oath! I mostly game on mobile as console as become way to pricey for me to keep up with so I'm always looking forward to re-releases. hyuei Well-Known Member Apr 13, 2012 49 0 6 Male #14 hyuei, Feb 10, 2016 I already played the first one and I loved it, mainly because it was compatible with mobile--the battle is simple (ram and mash) and the art quality is great. It even runs smoothly on my iphone 4s. Anyone already played the first and played this one? Is there anything different? This week is holy moly. I shouldn't have bought a new HDD case earlier this month (TT-TT) Shaun Musgrave Well-Known Member Jul 8, 2013 1,088 3 38 Freelance writer, teacher, business owner Ibaraki, Japan #15 Shaun Musgrave, Feb 10, 2016 It's fundamentally similar (same engine, they were packaged together in this form before), but Ys 2 introduces magic and requires you to use it against most of the bosses. You have to zip around aim shots and stuff, so I would say it doesn't work quite as perfectly as the first game due to how finicky angles can be. But it's still very good and I think if you enjoyed the first one, you should get on well enough with this one. Adventure of Mana has really helped me enjoy ARPGs again. So there's hope I may enjoy Ys I & II. Nekku Well-Known Member May 31, 2013 1,542 7 38 #18 Nekku, Feb 10, 2016 Nope. You should instead wait for Titan Quest, which should be released anytime soon and is ported by the same developer as this one here.
