So bear with me as I am a total noob when it comes to the baseball game itself and to the physcial version of which the app is ported from. I can qutoe from BGG that the port features the exact artwork of the physical card game and the UI is rather, primitve as I am told. More update later... I was looking forward to it, as I'm a tabletop fan and am always looking for decent app versions of good games (though I've not tried this game). I can confirm the UI is somewhat simple, though the artwork is direct from the original game. There is solo mode built in, and word from the dev is that both true AI and universal support coming. I'm having a tough time winning, but that is less about the app and more about the game itself. I went through the first part of the tutorial only, which may account for my lack of initial success. Once you have gone through the basic tutorial you can easily start playing, but if you really want to dig in deeper still there are the additional turtorials and full game manual. While solo play has no actual AI, it is still fairly enjoyable. You start off with a fairly pathetic team that you'll slowly build up over the course of the series but the AI has a full roster of free agents that likely far outclass you. The big equalizer being that only YOU get to carefully plot the best guy to field to counter whatever shennanigans the AI blindly throws at you (the AI just plays the top card of its deck each turn, there is no decision process). Each turn of the game consists of you and your opponent playing single guys from your roster that will either help you score a run or thwart your opponent from doing so (sometimes both). The game also has a slight hint of rock-paper-scissors as each player is either a natural, cyborg, or robot, and some of the card effects you can play are specifically targetted vs. one of these types of players. Like if one of your naturals has the ability "quick-eye" his lowly single becomes a homerun if the last guy your opponent played was a cyborg. I think you are going to babble for another 30 minutes... Curry: BH2045 basically a card game in a baseball theme and try to beat the other team to win 4 games Mutton: it can be anything else and seriously you don't need to know the baseball rule anyway Curry: cause there is a tutorial Mutton: which we go through the first one out of 6 and head out to play Curry: the first one actually gives you all the basic ideas you need, and figure out the rest along the way Mutton: yup, that's after a series of losses... Curry: okay, onto the impression part. The UI is rather plain, buttons are flat, just black text over white background with a black border Mutton: think about the UI of Dream Quest, you will get the idea Curry: artwork is way better of course...anyway the UI has its own problems: say at the start of a game, there is a dialogue box in the very center of the screen asking you to select a pitch hitter. When you try to zoom in to read the description of a card, well that dialog box conveniently blocking the card view Mutton: which you cannot pan either away. Zoom control cause another problem, when you zoomed into a card and the game happened to play some animation, the focus drifts away and it is quite confusing Curry: another thing I don't like is double-tapping: double tap to go the agent-buying screen, double tap to return to Main Menu at the score screen, I think a button works better this way Mutton: yup not to mention, in the end, the text does not highlight at the end whether you have won the series or not Curry: at least Ascension highlights that, well, it is pretty obvious to your own self. Also, if you have not assigned a pitch hitter, the system still asks the user to perform action, which is ridiculous Mutton: sounds like we do not like the game much Curry: but rather we find it quite enjoyable. We still manage to win 1 game at Easy level, the others are Very Easy, Normal, Hard and Very Hard Mutton: that 11-3 win is very memorable Curry: I would call that luck Mutton: from my experience there is no such thing as luck Curry: Well the so called "AI", your opponent has very good cards, but they are played in order and the "AI" has no pitch hitter Mutton: cause the player always go first and you never know what the "AI"'s next card to play. If you played a Cyborg card with 2 Home Run hits just to find that the "AI" plays a card will removes all hit so if the player is a Cyborg, I am sure you will tear all your hairs out and smash your iPad onto something hard Curry: in your own mind only, that iPad is a rather expensive piece of equipment. And that's exactly what I call a lot of randomness is involved. May be a bit of luck and careful play can still save the day. Ah, you reminds me, the game is iPad only Mutton: I do totally agree, careful plan and play sensibly works. I think it is time we go back and read the rule-book and go through the rest of the tutorials. I feel the same way. The game is good and I enjoy playing it, I've also managed my first series win (on normal). I will keep on playing solo, but like you say there is a bit of luck in it all without AI so that will be a welcome addition to ensure long term replayability The UI doesn't need to be amazing, it it just needs to be 'not annoying' and not look him like a clip art word doc from the 90's (here I'm talking about the elements outside the original game assets which are fine). So I'm not looking for a massive overhaul, but - buttons that aren't clip art style - some pop up UX updates - something to help identify if you win or lose rather than just ending and going to main screen - some options for turning off noises, they are OK but maybe not always on! A nice to have would be - a bit of styling (like getting anyone who is a designer involved) to add some minimal tweaks to give it some form of veneer / depth. Not artwork changes but some smaller things like consistent assets, background images, borders, that godawful settings background. Edit.. On BGG the Dev mentions it is not available in some eastern countries (maybe China and Japan) he invites anyone to email him to find out why! (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
