It is heavily focused on crafting and exploration. The game is set in near-future New England after a catastrophic event killed most of the human population and spawned various monsters and hazards. Surviving is difficult: you have been thrown, ill-equipped, into a landscape now riddled with monstrosities of which flesh eating zombies are neither the strangest nor the deadliest. Unlike most roguelikes, it has no goal: the player is free to explore the procedurally generated map, clear areas of monsters, work with NPCs, and build shelters and vehicles. The gameplay is mainly based on day-to-day survival, and the game tracks parameters like hunger, thirst, morale, illness and temperature which the player must manage to stay alive. There are several other things in the game such as NPC Quests and Secret Structures. Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is heavily focused on crafting with many basic necessities such as clothing and food being craftable from raw items that are found lying around. There are several professions and scenarios to choose from during character creation, as well as a variety of positive and negative traits. The game also provides the player with a robust platform to construct structures and build/modify vehicles. The game includes vehicles, bionics, mutations, realistic fire and smoke effects, real-life seasons and a wide array of combat and crafting skills. This is a port of the collaborative, open source project on PC/Mac/Linux that has been in development for a number of years. There are very few games on iOS with this level of complexity and depth, and can easily be compared to Nethack or Dwarf Fortress adventure mode in this respect. I've been beta testing for some time, and happy to say that this port is serviceable and has come up with some decent solutions to some of the UX challenges to porting a game of this magnitude. It's like one of those games you didn't know you wanted. Can't wait to play this! zen_mode Well-Known Member Feb 8, 2015 366 0 16 Sydney #4 zen_mode, Dec 9, 2015 For those picking this up for the first time, make sure you check out the wiki as well to get some of the basics: http://wiki.cataclysmdda.com There's a lot going on in this game and there's definitely a learning curve to both navigating the many menus and commands and also getting some basic strategies down, especially if you have limited experience with more traditional roguelikes. Once you get a grasp on things though, you're setting your self up for potentially some very rewarding gameplay and there's many in the community with thousands of hours logged. This game is the real deal and only very rarely do we see something with this sort of longevity come to iOS. Never tried it but so very happy to give it a shot on my iPhone. Talbs Well-Known Member May 1, 2011 2,616 377 83 #6 Talbs, Dec 9, 2015 Just gave this a go for the first time ever. Man this game is hardcore. Think I've got some reading up to do. Nycteris Well-Known Member Jun 25, 2012 86 0 0 #7 Nycteris, Dec 9, 2015 Whoa!! I had no idea they would bring this to iOS!! Instadownload! Maglor cat should go here. Repulsa Well-Known Member Jul 3, 2015 1,584 81 48 #8 Repulsa, Dec 9, 2015 This game seems a little too overcomplicated. I personally don't understand the complex PC-like controls and menus for a touch screen mobile game. It looks really cool don't get me wrong I got as far as creating a character and I really appreciated the massive variety of options. I guess i wish it was just a little more easy to jump right into. zen_mode Well-Known Member Feb 8, 2015 366 0 16 Sydney #9 zen_mode, Dec 9, 2015 The controls aren't perfect as it is a PC port. The game is difficult, the learning curve a year ago wasn't as steep for me because I was already comming from obtuse interfaces such as Nethack and Angband. But if was comming from little roguelike experience it would be a lot more difficult, especially seeing you have to grapple with an additional mobile UI interface on top. Surviving in the game itself is also difficult, but reading the wiki and following the basic strategies there makes it a lot easier. Though still not trivial. All in all, the people that this port is really going to appeal to is those that have been playing the PC version and want it on the go. The vast majority of mobile gamers will be put off by the less than ideal interface and complexity and difficulty of the game. Kaje85 Active Member Apr 17, 2013 33 0 0 #10 Kaje85, Dec 9, 2015 Oh wow. I have been playing CataclysmDA on the PC for as long as I can remember it being available. And now it's on iOS? Instant buy. This is going to keep me nice and warm this winter. Thank you! zen_mode Well-Known Member Feb 8, 2015 366 0 16 Sydney #11 zen_mode, Dec 9, 2015 Last edited: Dec 17, 2015 Nothing to pay for. The iAP is for sound packs but I'm honestly not even sure how much he's charging for it. Either way it's obviously not required. On an unrelated note, here are the settings I use that I've found useful for this platform: - autosave every 100 turns - all animations off - tileset: RetroASCII20 -> Edit: scratch that, RetroASCII30 is probably better ChiefStorm New Member Oct 30, 2014 4 0 0 #12 ChiefStorm, Dec 9, 2015 I have never posted in this forum, but I had to for Cataclysm DDA. The whole game is there save for some lua required mods but most of what you've come to love and expect from DDA is there. The only issue is DDA itself can be rather hard to adjust to if you're not a roguelike player. I'd recommend watching some beginner tutorials on YouTube, play the tutorial in game and finally on the main screen go to the hell menu and read all of what's there. It's well well worth it. The absence of direct touch interaction with onscreen prompts, menus and in-game items renders even the most trivial actions cumbersome. Hesitate to rate entire game on this issue alone but simply don't have the patience required to labor through the iOS keyboard control scheme. The die-hard will surely chuckle as the game seems as deep as any in the genre.
