Anyone tried it? sapphire_neo Well-Known Member Jan 20, 2011 3,934 0 0 #3 sapphire_neo, Oct 2, 2015 Wow, this seems like a much more respectful take on the novel/movie than I had expected from Hollywood. L.Lawliet Well-Known Member Jun 28, 2011 6,405 420 83 #4 L.Lawliet, Oct 2, 2015 Wow a PAID movie tie in app? This sounds promising. And it definitely seems very similar to lifeline. I would love to hear impressions from people that have read the book and those that haven't. Hopefully you get a good lengthy experience instead of a quick novel/movie tie in (being honest here, most movie tie in stuff are short and many limited in content). drmad Well-Known Member Jun 2, 2013 716 2 18 Indonesia #5 drmad, Oct 2, 2015 This is cool im playing this now It kinda like lifeline but it have better interface There is an email tab from Nasa team that will get you advice clues, etc it's pretty solid irowboat Member Jul 25, 2012 8 0 1 #6 irowboat, Oct 3, 2015 Having read the book, I am loving the spot-on Watney tone of the back-forth. I *would* like a pause function, because I showed a co-worker at lunch, had to break away, and couldn't get back to Watney in a timely manner, and he went on without me. While I suppose that's true to form (and I suppose I could force-quit the app), it would be nice to play without wondering if I've let him blow himself up while attending to real-life tasks. L.Lawliet Well-Known Member Jun 28, 2011 6,405 420 83 #7 L.Lawliet, Oct 3, 2015 That's pretty funny! So it's a lot more real time than the other novel-esque adventure apps? Let me know how long it takes you to finish it. I hope it's a fairly long and fun adventure sense they kind of have a full novel to work with. sapphire_neo Well-Known Member Jan 20, 2011 3,934 0 0 #8 sapphire_neo, Oct 3, 2015 That's enough to sell me on the game! I am enjoying it so far, but you are very limited to short sessions of gameplay. The fact that it plays out in real time sounds like a good idea in theory, but it often means that you only get a few minutes of gameplay then have to wait for hours with nothing to do while Mark is Away. I feel that there should be an option to fast-forward time when Watney is sleeping etc, so that you get the impression that time has passed without cutting you off from playing the game. I like the general tone of the game but its kinda frustrating that you have nothing to do most of the time. Rawk GWJ Well-Known Member Feb 9, 2014 335 0 16 #15 Rawk GWJ, Oct 4, 2015 After playing it a bit, I say that if you liked the book or movie, then you will like this game. It's not the greatest gaming experience I've ever had, but it's pretty good. And the writing is true to the book and movie. I started the first lifeline again and even the sound is structured the same and I'm wondering if maybe three minute games was part of it or at the least was consulted and ok with this? If not, is it really ok to make such a close duplicate (minus added depth and extensive story changes). I love games that expand on their predecessors but maybe at least give lifeline credit in the description.. Or am I wrong in thinking that Lifeline was the first of its kind just like this... (Not choose your own adventure but this exact system) Nonetheless I love this game which bothers me... If another studios system, mixed with a killer ip results in the excessive success that the original creator of the system deserved.. It seems unfair. All that work and innovation only to watch others create a barrage of games that utilize the system that they (3 minute games) created but adding loved and well known (or cult classic) type stories.. It seems backwards but such is the world of apps. Maybe 3 minute should collaborate on their next game to prove they're still the innovator with their set up as these guys did a great job making this .. I just hate that I feel like I'm playing what I expected from lifeline 3 here sapphire_neo Well-Known Member Jan 20, 2011 3,934 0 0 #17 sapphire_neo, Oct 6, 2015 This is not a Lifeline ripoff... This is exactly the kind of game that fits beautifully within the framework of the book. The game idea developed by 3 Minute Games isn't even that novel or unique, it's just a CYOA gamebook that moves in real-time. The idea of conversing with a single character throughout a game and guiding them isn't unique either. Republique did it, I remember another game where you guide a crew member through a spaceship. And if it's a matter of guiding a marooned astronaut off a planet... well, Andy Weir's The Martian came much before Dave Justus wrote Lifeline. And even then that premise isn't all that unique. This is just a case of two games seeming similar because they deal with similar plots and similar mechanics due to the requirement of the framework. Also, The Martian goes far beyond delivering just a CYOA experience. It's not even remotely close to being a cash grab licensed product that we usually expect from Hollywood. skatter New Member Oct 24, 2013 3 0 0 #18 skatter, Nov 20, 2015 Well, I'd really love to buy this (especially since I just got an Apple Watch!) now that the price dropped, but I keep getting a message saying this item is being modified right now.
