"...a kind of psycho-religious version of Frogger..." - New York Times "Daniel Johnston's iPhone Game Is Predictably Bizarre, Bizarrely Fun" - Gizmodo.com "...Hi, How Are You has taken on a whole new layer of awesome..." - TouchArcade Hi, How Are You is a 3D platformer based on the art and music of the late Daniel Johnston, and starring his well-known character, Jerimiah the Innocent. Jerimiah has been transformed into a frog by an evil force and must reverse the curse to rescue the love of his life. Help him regain his true form by outrunning, outsmarting, and outmaneuvering his enemies through increasingly tough obstacles in a bizarre, otherworldly universe. It's not enough just to find the exit — Jerimiah has to hop on every green square in the stage to open the way forward, and each labyrinthine level contains special bonus squares as well. With 40 different stages and 4 different forms, you've got your work cut out for you! The entire game showcases Daniel Johnston’s music, creating an interactive music video like no other. High scores aren’t the only prize either, as each new achievement unlocks a unique piece of Daniel’s artwork. * An Awesome Soundtrack: Hop along to tunes drawn from Daniel Johnston's 2001 album, Rejected Unknown! * Explore 40 Stages: Discover hidden secrets, find time-saving shortcuts, and set foot on every green square to open the path forward! * Take Daring Leaps: As a frog, Jerimiah is able to cover some pretty serious distances with his jumps. Cross wide gaps and climb to great heights! * Stylish Graphics: Travel through worlds inspired by Johnston's artwork and see his sketches come to life in full 3D! * Master Different Forms: Jerimiah begins the game as a frog, but he'll eventually take on three other forms, each with their own unique properties! * Choose Your Controls: Play with virtual buttons for a more classic experience, or use tilt controls to really get moving! Hi, How Are You also supports MFi, XBox, and PlayStation controllers. ************************************************** GameClub is a subscription mobile gaming service. Weird storyline, weirder name. It all seems like a purpose-built piece of artistic self-indulgence. That said though it looks like good self-indulgence anyway, and might be worth checking out if there's a lite version. jeffreyzhang Well-Known Member Sep 17, 2009 88 0 0 #5 jeffreyzhang, Sep 24, 2009 Ooooh! it's really colorful and looks cute! KSC Well-Known Member Jul 19, 2009 126 0 0 #11 KSC, Sep 24, 2009 Last edited: Sep 24, 2009 Well, it's not bad. I dunno how it stacks up with other offerings these days, but if your're a fan of Daniel Johnston, I'd guess you'd be pretty happy with it. I wasn't (a fan that is), but I looked him up on Wiki and he seems like quite the interesting fellow, so I gave it a shot. Basically, the premise of the game is to turn all the blocks on the gameboards green. At first it's just a matter of navigating your dude around the board, but later you have some obstacles that get in your way. Think of it like a really twisted version of Q-Bert. You are timed, but if you don't complete the level before the timer ticks down, you are still able to finish without having to restart, you just don't get as high a score. By beating the level before the allotted time you can unlock achievements Controls take some getting used to. The frog (you're first playable character) moves forward on his own (again, like Q-Bert), you control him by either tilting the device or tapping arrows on either side of the screen. In order to stop your guy, in the case of waiting for a platform to lower/rise let's say, you have two STOP sign shaped buttons on either side of the screen. When you want to start moving again, you simply release the "stop" button. Other than a bit of learning curve to get the hang of things, the controls are generally responsive. As you progress through the levels more and more ememies appear as well as various kinds of blocks. For instance around level 5 there are blocks that turn green when you jump on them, but if you go through that area again, they go back to being gray. So you'll have to plan your path accordingly. All in all it's pretty fun. As you can see by the low download size, there aren't many songs included. What few seem to be offered appear to just be the chorus on a loop. It doesn't get annoying though and the songs are kinda catchy. A little too mellow for my tastes, but that's just me. I dunno if I would really suggest this to anyone. There's a lot of great, arguably better, games to be had in lieu of Hi, how are you. It's not at all bad, but it's nothing extrordinary either. edit: In the options menu you can totally change the controls! I don't know how I missed this, but you're able to switch to a virtual joystick on the left and single "STOP" and the two arrows to change the camera angle on the right. This scheme is infinitly better than the default. I'm gonna play a bit more and see if this bumps the enjoyment up a few pegs. zztfox Well-Known Member Oct 15, 2008 812 0 0 #12 zztfox, Sep 24, 2009 Yeah, I agree with KSC, it is pretty fun and the controls take a little learning but are above average. I am still playing as the frog, though. Just a warning, this game is really trippy. The graphics are like Yoshi's Island on acid! As for the music, it was not that bad, just not my taste. I noticed it played my own music if I started it before loading the game, so at least you can listen to your own music. rococoman Active Member Sep 24, 2009 28 0 0 #13 rococoman, Sep 24, 2009 This is my first posting! I signed up just to comment on this game. I agree with the earlier posts in that the game isn't terribly original. I am also unfamiliar with Daniel Johnston. That being said, the game IS gorgeous. It runs wonderfully smoothly on my 1st gen, and I am shocked at how well animated the frog is. For 1 dollar, this is a great, fun little piece of art that you can show off. This is the kind of game for which I bought an iPod touch. Really cool stuff! djflippy Well-Known Member Mar 9, 2009 4,441 0 36 #14 djflippy, Sep 24, 2009 I am a Daniel Johnston fan, from way back, and I am all over this. The guy is like certifiably insane, but he is also very talented in many realms; Whether video games is one of them, I'm about to find out. When I first saw this, I thought someone was trying to blatantly rip him off and then I saw DrFunFun as the publisher. At the indie record store I used to work at, we would always order his simple black&white cassette releases...damn, I must be old! indyraider4 Well-Known Member Feb 8, 2009 658 0 0 #15 indyraider4, Sep 26, 2009 I love daniel johnston too, and just by theme, it reminds me of envirobear: Not a super fun game, but a hilarious piece of art. Seeing the documentary about his life, exposed me to his creativity and the devs have really brought that flavor to this fun game. The visuals appear uniquely hand drawn and the acid coloring lends to a vibrate ride. Listening to the chorus lyrics as you're hopping on green squares is a trip worth taking into this artists head. My new daily meditative experience away from medium 5 GD Swarm, civ,etc This is a unique indie gem worth getting. I use the touch controls rather than accelerometer, and having that option is great. The touch controls are implemented well and never feel awkward. The puzzles are witty, though I wouldn't necessarily classify them as outright challenging. But it's the graphics that really shine for me. Colorful, fluid (as I said earlier) and artful. Overall, a great game. Especially for just 99 cents. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
