Voted one of the 2013 Best Thematic Solitaire Games for the Spare Time Challenged on BoardGameGeek! James Franklin — Patient Zero — collapses after stepping off a plane from the Congo at JFK International Airport. He is rushed to Forest Hills Hospital where he is placed in an isolation ward. It is quickly discovered he has Morbusian, a constantly mutating virus that is resistant to all known antivirals. The survival of humanity itself is at stake! In Infection: Humanity's Last Gasp you are the director of the Department of Plague Control (DPC) field office in New York City. You make the decisions about what parts of the virus to study, which personnel to hire, and what equipment to purchase. You'll soon discover you are working with an eccentric group of scientists who don't always work well together — and one very resourceful lab rat named Marvin. As the casualties increase, so does the stress and mistakes made, as you try to complete your vaccine before time runs out for all of mankind! This strategy game uses simple mechanics in a multitude of combinations to create engaging, deep gameplay as you try to eliminate an evolving virus that could spell the end of the human race. While random events from the Status Reports might throw a wrench in your plans (or occasionally help you out), you'll use the Lab Personnel and Equipment you've hired to piece together randomly generated proteins into the different parts of a vaccine, all while managing dwindling funding resources as the Death Toll Track climbs. Each time that your Containment fails you come one step closer to losing this battle, so make sure that you push everyone to their limits before the infection reaches critical levels. The game features 14 challenging viruses to cure as well as a custom game mode to play with optional game rules. The game is designed as a solo game which I love because it means there is no AI design to worry about. I find that with board games the AI is often a disappointment for experts in that particular game. This game is a bit of a puzzler with a dice mechanic that is used to advance the threat, build tension, and move the game to the end. The good thing is that it can be mitigated for the most part using sound strategy. I am not sure how they will work out the difficulty for the iOS app, but the game had a 2 sided board, one side being easy and the other hard. You could also further tweak it out by making changes at the setup. I do hope they also include the setup changes as an option for those looking for an extreme challenge. islesfan Well-Known Member Jul 25, 2012 319 3 18 Male Teacher Nevada #7 islesfan, Jun 11, 2015 Trying to buy it, but it tells me "this item is no longer available" when I tap BUY. guzzla Well-Known Member Patreon Bronze May 12, 2015 162 0 0 #8 guzzla, Jun 11, 2015 Yeah this app store issue has happened the last 3 or 4 weeks running. I only waited it out once and it was 3AM EST before I could buy. If you plan on going to bed it will be available in the morning. Not sure why Apple can't get it together on this. dclnmurray Member Mar 22, 2009 19 0 0 #9 dclnmurray, Jun 11, 2015 Same here in Aus, not available. guzzla Well-Known Member Patreon Bronze May 12, 2015 162 0 0 #10 guzzla, Jun 11, 2015 It is now available, I just nabbed it. Suspiciously or maybe not, it went live along with a few others I was waiting for right at 3AM EST, or 12AM in Cupertino. It is possible that Apple is delaying releases now until 12AM local time? A few weeks ago I was also up at this time and the games I was tracking went live around 3AM. Anyway, now I won't have time to dive in until tomorrow but I will post impressions when I do. I did have a chuckle, however, watching a gameplay video of the physical board game, as I could so see somebody wandering by thinking, "Ahh poor guy, he's playing Bingo all by himself." sizzlakalonji Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Apr 16, 2009 5,706 1 0 Indiana, USA #12 sizzlakalonji, Jun 11, 2015 Ok, so I picked this up and gave it a go. It's pretty slick. The tutorial really isn't complete, and the in-game info is bare bones at best, but I was able to understand enough to generally figure out what's going on. It's clear there are a lot of behind the scenes calculations that are going on (mutations, etc.) that in the physical game are probably determined by a randomizer like a die roll. I'm going to read the rules to the physical game at BGG just so I have a better understanding of probabilities for these things. As it is though, it's an enjoyable game with a cool premise, and really slick presentation. I recommend it, but if you need to feel like you have a clear grasp of rules before playing, you may get frustrated and would be best reading the rulebook for the physical game. guzzla Well-Known Member Patreon Bronze May 12, 2015 162 0 0 #13 guzzla, Jun 11, 2015 I have noticed this with several board games....the in-game rules are not exactly great. I don't see the rules on BGG, but if you go to Victory Point Games website and click the game resources tab you can get a full rule book. I won't have a chance to play it until tonight but over on BGG they are saying that it actually gives you various probabilities in the app, which you would have to calculate manually with the physical game (you actually don't I have to do it, I never did and won quite often anyway). There are die rolls involved for various game events, and from what I read on BGG the app doesn't show you the process of a die rolling. So reading the rules will give you a good idea of when the die rolls are applicable. Off the top of my head there is a roll every time you use an equipment card unless you have the matching set, and there is a roll every turn to determine if the "death track" marker advances. The rolls can generally be modified by cards or by markers that come with certain characters. So you can have negative or positive modifiers either way. If you want to beat the game on viral level it is important to understand what all of the cards do, how to use them, etc. I have linked to the site below where you can get the rules. I will post my impressions as soon as I get a chance to play. http://www.victorypointgames.com/infection-humanity-s-last-gasp.html islesfan Well-Known Member Jul 25, 2012 319 3 18 Male Teacher Nevada #14 islesfan, Jun 11, 2015 Loving this game! The tutorial actually isn't all that bad at giving you the gist of how to play the game. As someone who is only familiar with the physical copy of this game but has never played it, I can't speak to how well the experience is recreated but I would say this is above average for a board game iPad port. The interface is relatively intuitive and responsive. The campaign section sets up some challenges for you to tackle. The RNG means that playing the same mission more than once won't be completely repetitive. The only thing that could use a little work is the use of equipment and staff. These are boosts that you can buy from the in-game shop for the same currency you're using to work on curing the disease that are consumable boosts to aid you in taking down the disease. They're not covered in the tutorial and at a glance, it's not super clear that you get multiple charges on purchase, either. I only ended up figuring out what these do by buying them on a whim to try and figure out what it was for. Once you've got all the aspects of the game in your head, it's a ton of fun. Hope plenty of people pick this up and maybe we'll see some additional content for it. islesfan Well-Known Member Jul 25, 2012 319 3 18 Male Teacher Nevada #18 islesfan, Jun 13, 2015 First bug.
