The strategy game features unique hand drawn map, complex morale, innovative controls and smart AI. Ultimate general: Gettysburg is a critically acclaimed indie wargame with one of the highest user ratings for strategy games on Steam and Metacritic. KEY FEATURES ============== **Campaign The campaign is split into 10 historical missions from the first engagements to the famous “Pickett’s charge”. Missions present different levels of complexity that will give you hours of gameplay. **Unique Controls & Unit Self-Awareness The game plays in real time, but you can pause at any time to plan your strategy and give orders to units. Drag simple movement arrows to command large forces as if you are drawing them on the tactical map. Units do not need micromanagement, able to act on their own: re-aligning, switching targets, withdrawing and forming battle lines without player input. **Smart AI The AI commanders are able to evaluate and gain tactical superiority in real time, reacting to your actions; fighting aggressively or defensively replicating actions of a competent human player. The game will provide the significant challenge on higher difficulty levels. **Detailed Map of Gettysburg We used satellite images and historical maps, recreating important locations, houses, ridges and hills that are depicted as accurately as possible within the game’s unique art style. If you are an American Civil War enthusiast, you will be happy to notice the amount of precision and information that the map provides. Not only will you be able to better understand the historical layout of the map, but also you will be able to use of each location and landmark in battle, thanks to the simulation of cover, concealment, terrain and high ground in the game. **Advanced Line of Sight Elevation and obstructions will affect unit visibility realistically. Units will use concealment and cover to survive artillery barrages, stage ambushes and more, but beware – the AI will attempt to do the same. **Tactics matter In Ultimate General: Gettysburg, you will realize that army units are not “machines” that blindly follow orders, but need to conserve strength and courage for decisive battle actions. Every basic tactical element that is expected from a strategy game is important for winning battles. Unite morale is affected by multiple factors including flank or rear attacks, casualties, volley shocks, artillery fire and fatigue. **Historically Accurate Forces and Leaders Ultimate General: Gettysburg includes the full order of battle for the Union Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Command famous brigades like the Iron Brigade, Louisiana Tigers, 1st Vermont, Bucktail Brigade, Gibraltar Brigade, Excelsior Brigade and many more. **Differences with the PC version The game was redesigned from the ground up to provide good usability and playability on tablets. If you have played the game on the PC, the major change is in the campaign flow and in the user interface. The tactical combat and its features were tuned only slightly. You will be able to experience the same depth and challenge on iPad. I'm not into this slice of history but love this kind of game so I'll probably take the plunge on this one today. Only thing I'm not sure about is reading some of the Metacritic reviews saying there is only 1 map and it's all 2D, so it's hard to tell when you are in cover or on / behind a hill, even though the game takes those factors into account. Baracus Well-Known Member Jun 19, 2009 1,023 0 36 UK http://www.hatenintendo.co.uk #5 Baracus, Feb 21, 2015 Last edited: Feb 21, 2015 Well well, we have been spoilt with RTS games this week!! Firstly Timelines Assault on America, now this! My Imps: Very very VERY nice! I don't even know where to start really. OK, I will start with a tl:dr. If you like RTS battles, buy this now! Irrelevant of theme if Gettysburg or the Era doesn't appeal to you, it matters not. Get this game! Why? Several reasons actually. CONTROLS - pretty much like Autumn Dynasty (draw free form path or circle to multi-select then draw path to move them all) with addition of a long-tap and drag to "face" a certain way. Because each 'unit' is a group representing hundreds or thousands of troops, you can and NEED to position them facing the way you want. Feels very intuitive and fluid to use, perfect for touch screens. It's like Autumn Dynasty on an epic scale and I love it! A.I. - there's actually 2 sides of the AI to talk about. Very interestingly as it says in the description your own guys have an AI, it really works. They don't always do what you tell them to do exactly, and they will do things autonomously, both for good and bad depending on the MORALE I think, which in turn is affected by how you are commanding them, so it is in your control indirectly which is a really refreshing approach and works incredibly well. Enemy AI is also very convincing and surprising. They rout, they reposition, they regroup and they are hard to catch out by doing something unexpected, but because it takes time for units to move to new positions, you certainly can launch a surprise attack on them. Very satisfying, but also from that point on the way they dynamically adjust is great and really gives you a lot to think about in real time. The game has a nice pace, it takes a bit of time to traverse the map, but you can tell a group to "run" for a while without affecting negatively on their battle readiness it seems. GAMEPLAY - really dynamic. Battles can quickly turn to chaos, but if you have a solid plan and work with your battalions TOGETHER it really makes a difference. It's not purely a game of numbers, positioning, flanking especially, morale of troops and map features really impact the outcome of each skirmish. You need to have a good overview of what you are trying to achieve and be strong, otherwise you can feel yourself getting whittled down As I said, the pacing is very nice. You have time to take it all in and react but it's never boring. When you have a group of like 2000 vs 2000 the attrition rate is pretty slow, but satisfying when you can also flank that enemy and see their troop count going down faster. It's represented really well on screen. GRAPHICS - awesome. Lovely details. Seeing the hundreds of individual units making up battalions moving, fighting and changing formations is really well done. Seeing the scattered corpses after a showdown is a nice touch and the map itself (which I was worried about being only 1 map) is really beautiful. There is actually more than 1 map, but they are obviously sections of a bigger area around Gettysburg (i.e. West side, North side etc). It doesn't even matter that it's 2D, it's charming. And the way hills are represented by an overlay of the Topographic rings (or whatever they are called) gets the info across no problem. CAMPAIGN - can't say too much yet but you can play both sides (one side is beginner, the other advanced as it says) and I am 4 missions into the beginner side, but it comes on strong. It's not holding your hand even from mission 1. You need to work in a coordinated way to succeed. OVERALL - as you can probably tell, this is fantastic. Best RTS on iOS? Well, I won't say for sure until I played some more but feeling is that YES, IT IS. -------------- EDIT: some more thoughts... So about hidden depths and layers of strategy. This is not really a negative because the game isn't going for this but there is no way to choose starting positions, what units you take into a battle, or ongoing persistence between battles except apparently the Morale your battalions end a mission with are taken forward to the next stage (although I didn't notice this because seems all mine start at 100% even if I did badly. It might just be certain missions are linked in this way). For history buffs it seems the accuracy of Batallion names etc are true to life. Also love the way the timeline is done in that each mission is a certain time of the day spread over 3 days, and reinforcements arrive at specific times of the day, and from a specific direction, half-way through a mission which I assume is what actually happened. Another nice touch. Guess what I'm saying is what the game is trying to do is done right, it hasn't got some of the standard RTS elements going on but that's also what makes the game fresh and different. Managing the Morale, Condition and Reload (this is a timer if that unit is reloading weapons) are the core of the finer sides of the strategy/tactics. Very focussed on "commanding" the battles. It's a really good platform for Batallion / column era battles, can't wait to see if this becomes a series like Total War. I think it easily could. This era is not something I've ever gotten massively into before but it's actually so much more interesting than modern era. You can't just spam and rush, much more considered, almost puzzle like / methodical approach, with a deeper understanding of the whole battle field required as it evolves. Great stuff! Would be nice to see regular releases of new scenarios (separate purchases) in the longer term, I for one will buy them all without hesitation! I'd love if they can make real time MP work for this on mobiles. Is there enough bandwidth to take all the necessary data on a more crappy connection (lowest common denominator connection, like 3G)?? Guessing peer-to-peer would be pretty terrible, but via a dedi server might be fine. Nice touch! Another nice touch is the iCloud progress saving, so when you run out of battery playing on a device like I have today, you can just continue on another one haha. Also noticed there are STATISTICS after a battle, not the screenshot I posted before, but a battle report that has TONS of detail about kills/losses etc of each regiment on both sides, all of which you can re-sort in any way you want by tapping the column headings. A lot of love has gone into this I tell thee. Amazing beautiful game. Mad that it's all coded by one guy I think?! Ex-modder...
