It's touch controlled with a pseudo-relative touch method. The ship moves to the spot you touch but about an inch off from being blocked by your finger. It works beautifully with all the benefits from either control scheme and none of the limitations. If you try it out, you must put the sound on! Every enemy explodes with a wonderfully weighty crunch, sending flaming shrapnel coursing across the screen. Your auto-fired shots ping with a satisfying power but not in a repetitive, ear-bleeding manner. The soundtrack is nothing short of the finale from a grand space opera with choruses belting out beautiful and over the top songs like the world is ending. I'm yet to sample the real good stuff (bosses and loot) and the ugly (IAPs in particular) but this is looking really unmissable in my opinion. Edit: It would be appear that IAPs are handled mostly through a life system. Basically, an enery bar but one that only goes down when you die which is definitely a more palatable option. I've been hit once in two different levels and it takes a point off your 50 HP bar which is both very generous and rather indicative of a very fair payment system to me. There could easily be more to it but that's all I've found in Offline mode. The choice to play offline or online is greatly appreciated too, though you can't switch between the two without losing your progress so a decision must be made early on. I always find that the small touches are my favourite moments in games. Gemini Strike is made of them. Clip an enemy and they'll flinch before restoring course A heavier but not fatal shot will set them afire, leaving them to flare up into a stunning blue flash seconds later. Power-ups are are varied and incredibly effective, denoted by the colour of the pickup, a double tap will launch either hundreds of projectiles, a vicious homing missile, a stuttering but incredibly powerful laser or many more. Even the midboss fights are satisfying. They're no longer simple bullet sponges that interrupt the flow of chaos, they're deadly menaces that fill the screen with bullets and soak up your shots until gloriously imploding. Add that together with the currency floating around to tempt you into dangerous patches and cargo ships holding loot and you the pace never lulls. Loot is handled pretty predictably; you'll find crates with items and equip them between rounds. The money you earn is used to pay for the opening so this will most likely be an avenue for more monetisation but it's currently very manageable and well worth the cost. I'm really enjoying it so far, I'm hoping others do too! Dirty Harry Hannahan Well-Known Member Apr 14, 2011 1,659 0 0 Planet Earth #4 Dirty Harry Hannahan, Aug 21, 2014 Looks good. Like a shmup combined with borderlands. Currently in Sector 18 and my ship's stats are far from matching those in the screenshots which means this is a rather long game with a light story to keep things going. Really wish this had relative touch but it's good enough. (Edit 9/8/14: relative touch is coming) The ship moves pretty fast and does a fair job of staying north of where you're pointing. Since it's free, there's IAP. The primary currency is relatively abundant and is used to upgrade weapons or open white cargo boxes. Premium currency comes in the form of credits. You get one for free per day, one per sector cleared, and two per secret mission. Uses for credits: - 3 credits to open a gold cargo box that guarantees a rare - 5 to 30 credits to buy a different ship - 1 to revive in battle if you die I would rate the IAP fair for a free player (far from the likes of Glu or Com2us) but expensive if you're going to splurge on shortcuts. Weapons will quickly be phased out though as you progress towards sector 100. The great thing is that nothing is locked away with IAP. I said I love the loot. Stats are damage, life, and armor. You have a standard gun which can vary depending on the ship, and all sorts of firepower ranging from spread shot lasers, homing rockets, blackhole bombs, and some others you've probably seen before. What makes this game different is the effect each one offers. Burst rockets every 4 seconds? Okay. Invulnerability shield when critical? Sweet. Chance to counterattack when hit? Solid. Chance for lifesteal? Bring it on! Presently, I focused on a tanky ship so I can run through any mine field. Pretty fun! Bosses are huge and span the entire iPhone's screen width. They have crap tons of HP and love to spam laser beams and $@%! stuns but hey, challenge accepted. Target weak spots to blow them up. There's only one background and eventually, every fight feels like the last but the search for loot is a real grabber. One big factor that holds this back is the need for internet. Facebook login is also asked (I denied it my friend list) but you can play as a guest. I don't know if there are any limitations to not logging in. UI can glitch forcing you to quit the app and restart it to fix things but that only happens once in a while when checking items. Be aware that it's a soft launch, currently in NZ and CA. If you don't mind those, I recommend checking this out. To the dev (if you ever see this): add an endless survival mode like Phoenix HD to farm for currency and to add a game center leaderboard to the game. Achievements would be great too. Echoen Well-Known Member May 16, 2012 2,114 3 38 USA #16 Echoen, Aug 26, 2014 Last edited: Aug 27, 2014 I'd say save up for the best of a class with the stats you like (purple name) if you don't plan on spending money. The bonus effects have a better cooldown or longer duration on the best ships. Read the description of the cheapest variant to learn more about what each does. All the effects the ships have can be acquired from weapons. Personal favorite: Sakura class - Raikou. These ships are all-out DPS including the default weapon. It fires a lot faster than the starter ship's class and gets +30% damage to boot. It goes well with my preferred healing method (8% chance to heal X HP on hitting an enemy). Fighter class - Shock Phantom. Fires the same way as the starting ship but with bonus to damage and HP. 2 homing EMP missiles every 2 seconds is actually pretty good and works on mini bosses. Artemis - Evira. The scatter shot is pretty good and fires twice every 4 seconds. Tanky ship with 15% to HP and armor. Storm - Fellbach. 10% to all stats is nice and so is having two chains. I love chains because they home in on targets. The basic shot is a single round bullet with a slower fire rate compared to the fighter. Corsair class. There are 3 ships, each offering 15% to one stat. The basic shot is a single moderate rate and strength bullet. The hex shield absorbs an attack and regenerates every 20 seconds. That's actually pretty decent defense when you get a hang of the attack patterns. Eidolon class. They all do the same thing: basic shot turns into a moderate rate gun that fires in random directions. The cone isn't too wide to be honest but large enough for me to dislike. The laser compensates for the lack of control in direction. Odin class - Anvindr. The most expensive ship. The basic shot turns into slow firing but powerful semi homing plasma shots. Key feature is the 12 second invulnerability shield that pops at low health. HP and damage bonus is great. amusing Grace Well-Known Member Dec 23, 2008 1,685 8 38 Music, Muse, Magick Berlin, Germany #17 amusing Grace, Aug 26, 2014 Thanks a lot Echoen for the quick and in-depth reply.
